Hazardous fine dust
Man needs air to breathe. Clean air. Air quality in the major
industrial nations is getting worse and worse. In towns and along
the major traffic arteries in particular, soot and other fine particles
create dust that is hazardous to health.
Europe in general . Strict limits have been in force in the EU
since 1st January 2005. In the near future, more and more European
cities will introduce strict emission reduction measures as a result of
this law. In Germany, various towns and cities have already set up
en-vi ron mental zones. Only those vehicles that fulfil the Euro IV standard
receive long-term authorisation to circulate are allowed to drive in the
environmental zones.
Legal provisions
Different laws apply depending on country. Below are some
examples.
Germany . Several towns have set up environmental zones.
Only those vehicles that meet the particle reduction class II and thus the
limit value or the Euro IV standard, receive the “green” fine dust badge
and, with it, long-term admittance to the environmental zones. From the
beginning of 2009 the motorway toll for HGVs will be increased dra-
matically. This increase is significantly lower for Euro I, II and III vehicles
which are equipped with an approved particulate filter. Thus the filter
helps also to reduce operating costs.
United Kingdom . In the UK London is leading the way with its
low emission zone, which was introduced in February 2008 for older
commercial vehicles over 12 tonnes gvw. In July 2008 this was extend-
ed to include buses and coaches over 5.5 tonnes and some smaller
commercial vehicles.
Netherlands . More and more cities are introducing restricted
environmental zones. Trucks and lorries with a Euro 0 or Euro I engine
are not permitted to enter these zones. Euro II and III engines must be
fitted with a particle filter.
Denmark . Since 2009 lorries and buses with a total weight of
over 3.5 tonnes have to meet at least emission standard Euro 3 or
have a particulate filter retrofitted in order to drive within the environ-
mental zones in towns like Copenhagen, Frederiksberg and Aalborg.
From 2010 the vehicles will have to meet at least emission zone Euro 4
or have a diesel particulate filter retrofitted.
Logical retrofit
Many older commercial vehicles – buses, coaches, construc-
tion machines – do not comply with the strict provisions, although they
could still operate. So what should you do? Besides buying new, which
makes little economic sense, there is a less expensive alternative avail -
able: retrofitting the engine with a particle filter. Particle filters from
Baumot are easy and cost-effective to install. But above all they comply
with all legal requirements. With this solution older commercial vehicles,
buses, coaches and construction machines get a new lease of life.
Closed f i l ter system
The Baumot diesel particle filter system (DPF system) is a
closed, passive system. It cleans the exhaust gas from diesel engines
almost entirely of carcinogenic soot particles, hydrocarbons (HC) and
carbon monoxide (CO). The filter system’s self-cleaning properties
make labour-intensive regeneration procedures and the use of diesel
additives as regeneration aids superfluous.
Ref ined standard Baumot BA model
The latest Baumot BA DPF system has been available since
spring 2007. Baumot BA is an all-rounder. It can be installed in buses,
coaches, trucks and construction machines. The system is noted for
its impressively stable heat behaviour and it guarantees reliable
regeneration even with low exhaust gas temperatures. This means that
diesel engines with low load cycles can also be fitted with this self-
cleaning particle filter.
The benefits to you at a glance: • VERT, TÜV and CARB certified, approved by EST in England, by the
Dutch RDW and by the Danish DTI• Reduction of particle emissions by over 99%• Reduction of hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) clearly
below the EU limits• Low-maintenance, completely passive system with automatic
regeneration• Filter regeneration even at low exhaust gas temperatures (from
230°C)• Full guarantee for two years• Housing made entirely of corrosion-free high temperature-resistant
stainless steel• Long useful life thanks to tough filter construction

Ind iv idual BA-A and BA-B specia l vers ions
In most cases the standard BA model meets requirements.
But if you are looking for a diesel particle filter for special uses,
Baumot has the right individual solution available for this too. The
Baumot BA-B is designed for lower exhaust gas temperatures.
The exhaust gas temperatures required for filter regeneration are
lower than with type BA.
Type BA-A is used as a system with an additive for special
purposes, particularly for old engines. Wherever very high soot
emissions, heavy consumption of oil and extremely hot exhaust gas
temperatures combine. For instance, even 40-year-old classic buses
can become superclean with a particle filter.
.
Ingenious s impl ic i t y
The way our particle filters work is as simple as it is
ingenious. While the exhaust gases flow through the mutually-closed
channels of the particle filter, carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocar-
bons (HC) are oxidised. The soot coming from the engine, which is
nothing other than unburnt fuel, is collected in the filter and complete-
ly burnt via a catalytic reaction. This catalytic reaction is initiated
by the coating of the ceramic monoliths. We use a combination of
precious metals for the coating. Depending on the type of engine, the
breakdown of the undesirable emissions starts at temperatures of
230°C and above. The average temperature may be significantly
lower.
Thanks to precision manufacturing we manage entirely
without seals for the gas-tight joints of covers and filters. This redu-
ces costs if the filter has to be dismantled for service or mainte-
nance.
Elimination of harmful exhaust gases – diesel particle
filters individually tailored to your requirements.
Fewer exhaust gases
Independent test centres have carried out
exhaust gas tests and confirmed the following re-
ductions with stable NOx emissions:
• 99 % fewer soot particles (PM)
• 96 % less carbon monoxide (CO)
• 87 % fewer hydrocarbons (HC)
