    PROMOTIONMICHAEL FOGG INDEPENDENT FUNERAL DIRECTORS

Michael Fogg Independent Funeral Directors is a family-owned and run company offering a personal serviceto the local community and surrounding area ofSheffield.

Michael served his apprenticeship at independent funeraldirectors in and around Sheffield. Over the next 25 years hewatched the independents gradually get swallowed up bylarge co-operatives, before deciding to bring tradition and apersonal touch to his own independent company.

Many large co-operatives have taken over small companies, but have retained the name and this can be very misleading. If the company does not say independent it is a part of alarge network.

Although a relatively young company, Michael has manyyears experience and training with old traditional funeraldirectors He is passionate about his vocation, caring forfamilies who have lost a loved one and guiding them throughevery step of the way.

He says: Our aim is to provide you with a professional, honest and personal service tailored to your individualrequirements. We treat the families we care for and guide withthe dignity and respect we would offer our own family. It isour privilege to be entrusted with the care of your loved one.

Michael Fogg Independent Funeral Directors is a member ofthe National Association of Funeral Directors and guarantees a

professional, caring service during this difficult period. Theyoffer a professional individually-tailored service thatencompasses every taste and requirement.

Services available include all of the following: funerals, cremation, council-managed crematoriums, privately-runcrematoriums, burial, council-owned cemetery, church-managed cemetery, woodland burials and coffins.

A wide selection of coffins is available, from traditional woodto personalised and coloured. Guidance is available on themost suitable coffin for the occasion and also the following:specialised funerals, horse-drawn funerals and motorbikehearse funerals.

Michael says: Everyone has different requirements and as atraditional independent funeral directors we prefer to becontacted on the telephone and not by email. We believe thisis a more personal service for you and your family. Thetelephone service is 24 hours, seven days a week. You arenever transferred to a call centre like many large co-operatives.A member of the family will answer your call personally.

If you would like any advice or information regarding afuneral, please call. There is no charge for information and weknow how daunting and stressful arranging a funeral can be,especially if you have neverhad the heartbreakingexperience of losing a lovedone.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR FAMILYBUYING OR SELLING A HOUSE? NEED HELP WITH WILLS, TRUSTS OR PROBATE? WE CAN HELP.

    PROMOTIONWOSSKOW BROWN

Moving house is stressful enough without unreliablesolicitors adding to the hassle. So dont take therisk choose a firm you know you cantrust.

Wosskow Brown has provided a conveyancingservice for more than 30 years and boasts a raftof technical knowledge and expertise. JohnKnight joined the team five years ago and, alongwith around 20 staff at the firms four offices, has astrong focus on client care, along with a proudtrack record of efficiency and speed.

Being independent from estateagents, they only work in your bestinterests and will never pressure youto exchange or complete before youare ready. Estate agents often try totie people into using their preferredsolicitor because they may receive areferral fee for doing so, Johnexplains. However, if these solicitorshave hidden fees, the total cost canbe much more than anticipated.

  • Iwander onto a bridge, over atrickling stream, through sometrees and out into the glorioussunshine. There is a winding pathahead of me with meadows on bothsides, with patches of blossomingbeds of flowers, hand-woven hedgesand a variety of birds tweeting in thetrees.

No, Im not in the middle of theDerbyshire countryside. Believe it ornot, this is just yards away fromCrystal Peaks, where the shoppingcentre's involvement in a number ofenvironmental projects, is evidentwhere ever you look.

Not only are there beautifulhanging baskets and planter tubs ofcolourful flowers outside Crystal Peaksmain entrance in preparation for theYorkshire In Bloom contest, which thecentre has won for the last threeyears, but the surrounding land ismaintained all year round by thecentre's onsite landscape team toencourage biodiversity in the area.

The stumpery outside the mall'soffices is an area filled with logs andtree stumps, providing a welcomehabitat for fungi and insects. Since

2009, the roof has been home to acolony of bees, which has doubled insize to four hives.

The efforts of centre manager LeeGreenwood and facilities managerMark Jackson helped Beighton villagewin Britain In Bloom in the past and lastyear were presented with the GoldGreen Apple Award 2014 for theirinvolvement in the Waterthorpe OchreDyke and Wildflower Corridor Projectat a Houses of Parliament ceremony.

Lee explained that all these projectsare part of Crystal Peaks landowners,Hermes' Responsible PropertyInvestment Scheme, which considersthe centre's impact on the environment. Its one thing to have nice planters andhaving the place look clean and tidy, but these days, Britain and Yorkshire InBloom are looking for a genuinecommitment to the environment andthe wider community as part of theirjudging criteria, he said.

But its not just about winningawards. We're a major landholder, covering nearly 40 acres and over thelast 30 years the housing in the areahas grown and grown. We are virtuallyon our customers doorsteps, so its

  • important to ensure these areas are a pleasant place to live and work.

The Waterthorpe Ochre Dyke and Wildflower Corridor Project istwo years into a five-year plan to maintain the stretch of landbetween Thorpe Green and Beighton High Street. The projectinvolves laying new paths, installing bridges and bird boxes, layinghedgerows, planting trees, cultivating land, planting nativewildflowers and digging ponds.

The scheme has secured an impressive 60,000 worth offunding for the next 18 months thanks to a number of sponsorsincluding the Veolia Environmental Trust, Crystals Peaks ShoppingMall and Retail Park and Incentive FM.

Heading the project is the Sheffield Landscape Trust, which runsa programme of activities with volunteers from the community andlocal schoolchildren. There was a hedge-laying course inOctober and a newt count walk tin March. Children fromEmmanuel and Waterthorpe School planted the first seedsearly last year, so they will be able to see the fruits of theirlabours this summer. The children also created interpretationboards to educate people about the local wildlife and flowers.

Sheffield City Councils countryside planning officer KarlKnight, who works with the Landscape Trust explained whythe project is beneficial for everyone living in the area. Itsabout educating and changing peoples perceptions.Hopefully those children who plant seeds are more likely togrow up to care about their area and wont want to vandaliseor drop litter because theyll have a greater sense ofstewardship and ownership.

Crystal Peaks monthly clean-up days are run by a three-manonsite landscape team in conjunction with the RiversideStewardship Company (RSC), which cleans up canals and streamsand provides health and safety expertise so that Crystal Peaks staffand other local volunteers can get involved too.

The project may be about educating children and locals aboutthe meadows right on their doorsteps, but even Lee admits theyneed support from the experts. Most bluebells you find in the UKare a hybrid of French and Spanish ones and not those thatnaturally grow in the woodlands, he explained. We nearly madethe mistake of planting these on the watercourse, which could havehad a detrimental effect to the existing native bluebells.

Its about balance and conservation because you have to becareful about what you plant, adds Mark who manages the onsiteteam. You should be planting whats naturally in the area, notbringing in plants that wouldnt naturally grow in these habitatsbecause these may overwhelm or destroy naturally occurringspecies.

The team is now careful to bring in plants that will benefit thelocal wildlife. One example of this is the bee orchids, which can befound in 15 locations around the Crystal Peaks site. The plants, which mimic the look of bees, are locally rare, but since they havebeen relocated to many areas including the stumpery, they havemade a great habitat and attracted more insects.

Lee and the team now look to the official guidelines set by theWildlife Trusts Biodiversity Benchmark landholder awards becauseit gives them more support and access to technical expertise sothey know that what they do ties in with the rest of the ecosystemand fits in with the Sheffield City Councils biodiversity action plan.

Not only is the project benefitting its volunteers, it is also creating

new jobs in the area. Crystal Peaks is working with SheffieldCollege to employ a new landscape apprentice.

Looking to the future, an Urban Nature Park project will directthe rainwater that usually goes into car park drains into a naturalirrigation system to the surrounding land.

The Ochre Dyke and Wildflower Corridor Project however, isabout going back to basics. I think weve lost an important asset.Over the last 75 years, around 97 per cent of meadows have beenwiped out because we dont do the traditional management of landthat we used to, said Karl. Its important that we hold on to whatlittle we have left.

Crystal Peaks has a number of events coming up, includingEmmanuel Environment Day on 16 May, with stalls run byEmmanuel Church, and a Bee Walk led by the centres beekeeper,Karen Ismarova on 16 June.

Over the last 75 years, around 97 per cent ofmeadows have been wiped out because wedont do the traditional management of land that we used to. Its important that we hold

  • Outwood Grange Academies Trust(OGAT) was born out of thesuccess of Outwood GrangeCollege. This large school of 2,200students was transformed under theleadership of Sir Michael Wilkins and theOutwood academy group is now one ofthe highest performing groups ofschools in the country.

Sir Michaels vision has always beento put students first and this ethos hasbeen paramount to OGATs success.

OGAT is committed to providing anoutstanding educational experience, in awell disciplined and supportiveenvironment and is helping thousands ofstudents achieve their potential.

The Trusts primary focus is to offerhigh-quality educational outcomes, guidance and support, and to deliverexciting, engaging lessons, a flexiblecurriculum and an extensive range ofactivities beyond the classroom.

OGATis a multi-academy sponsorand the family of schools currentlycomprises of 13 secondary schools andthree primary schools, who work incollaboration with each other to ensurethat all students irrespective of theirstarting point receive an excellenteducation.

In January 2014 The City Schoolbecame an academy under thesponsorship of OGAT and this year the

GCSE results moved the school to 12thout of 25 Secondary Schools in Sheffield prior to OGATs arrival, it was 22nd.This meant that year 11 studentsobtained record-breaking results.

The Trust relishes the opportunity tobe part of the much-neededregeneration of all areas it works in, andwishes to play a full role in the widercommunity.

Choosing the right secondary schoolfor your child can be one of the mostdifficult decisions a parent has to make.Every child has the right to anoutstanding education, and at OutwoodAcademy City they are determined toprovide it.

The whole point of schools is that children come first and everything we do must reflect this

single goal Students First. Sir Michael Wilkins, Academy Principal and Chief Executive

  • In 2014 Outwood Academy Cityachieved record-breaking GCSEresults. This meant that 55 per centof year 11 students achieved five A*CGCSEs including English and maths up from 43 per cent the previous year. The principal, Richard Brooke, isconfident that 2015 will see even betterresults.

So how and what has Outwooddone to bring about such rapid changeto transform this school from its specialmeasures Ofsted rating, to a safe, nurturing learning environment?

Richard has worked in manydifferent Outwood academies and saystheir success is down to the coreprinciple that staff demonstrate on aday-to-day basis of putting studentsfirst. The Academy also benefits from aunique leadership model whichpositively impacts on studentoutcomes.

Richard says: We have verytalented staff that have provenexperience and some wish to get a feelfor senior leadership. Our model allowsstaff the opportunity to take on aleadership role where they aresupported to develop their skills andthen, when the opportunity arises theycan confidently apply for roles such as

assistant principal and move on fromthere. The model is particularlysuccessful because more staff areleading on initiatives that will allowchange to happen quickly andeffectively.

Staff and students work closelytogether and this has been paramountto the progress of students and theAcademy as a whole. Its impressivehow much knowledge they have oneach and every student, which meansteachers can monitor and providepersonalised intervention to ensurethat every student reaches their fullpotential. Each senior leader has agroup of critical students that they workvery closely with to offer support andencouragement.

Praising Stars is an assessmentcycle held every six weeks. Parents areinformed of their childs progress andare able to meet with subject staff atparents evening. Each student receivesan effort grade and a prediction whichis then reassessed every six weeks. Iftheir targets are not reached, a learningmanager will look at ways to providesupport for them. Richard says: Withevery decision that we make weconsider how it will benefit the student. Its all about working together, problem

  • solving and adapting to support thestudents.

Richards office is near to the mathsand English departments, and it turnsout this is no coincidence, as he likes tokeep a close eye on these particularsubjects. Its easy to see how involvedhe is in every aspect of the academyand talks passionately about how theattitudes of students have becomemore positive since Outwood becameinvolved with the school. Were still ona journey. Its about winning hearts andminds.

Although the academy has a keeneye on academic success, this is not theonly focus. The academy walls are linedwith eye-catching images, brain-challenging riddles and subject-relevant information.

Everything the academy does iswith the intention of inspiring andencouraging its young people.Collaborative and peer learning ispromoted and interruptions in lessonsare kept to a minimum due to a well-implemented behaviour policy. Theymaintain an environment wherestudents and staff feel safe; senior staffand learning managers meet and greetstudents on the gate each morning andduring break times are always availablefor any student that needs them.

A school day at Outwood lasts from8.25am to 2.30pm, which allows plentyof time for an hours enrichment activityat the end of the day. There is a hugeselection on offer, from sports such asbadminton and trampolining, tojournalism and a ukulele club.

One of the big highlights of the yearis the year eight graduation ceremony,a formal event where students doncaps and gowns to celebrate theirprogressions from Key Stage 3 to KeyStage 4. All students who graduate are

offered the opportunity to take part in aresidential adventure experience. Yearsix students from the feeder primaryschools are also invited to come alongand see their peers graduate and togive them a taste of Outwood AcademyCity.

Those with a flair for creativity alsohave plenty of opportunity to showcasetheir talents with shows like last yearsWe Will Rock You, which was a sell-outover the three nights it ran. This had acast of 100-plus members and featuredmuch loved Queen Songs as well assome great choreography, which wasdevised by the students.

The academy is very much acommunity and teachers work togetherwith the students on Student Voice, where elections are held annually tovote for and elect a student president. There are many different committeessuch as anti-bullying, fundraising, hospitality and a year 11 promcommittee.

If you would like your child to bepart of this community; receive anoutstanding education, with a wealth ofsupport, care and guidance thencontact the academy today anyprospective parent is welcome to visitduring the day and have a tour aroundthe Academy.

  • Luke HealdIm so glad that Outwood came in, they introduced things specific to each student, like intervention to help in the subjects youneed. When I was younger I would never have dreamed of being on-level with the year 11s, but some of the year nines are doingjust as well as us. Pupils at other schools think Outwood is really strict, but when you come here you realise the rules are in place for a reason.

As well as having a focus on subjects that you need, like maths and English, Outwood dont forget about others; they thinkabout your interests and whats best for you. Im doing better in maths and English than I ever have done, but they put onopportunities like the Outwood festival. I can leave here saying Ive performed in a professional place, in a professionalproduction, and now Ive got a scholarship to go to RenaissanceArts, a dance school in Leeds and I hope to go on to become adancer.

Nicole MoshkovitzI used to be stubborn when Outwood first came, but they won me over. Now I wish Id got my head down from the beginning but Ive managed to go from all bottom sets to top sets. You dont see incidents of people being picked on anymore. Just think how well the year seven students will do now, beingguided all the way. Theres actually a girl in the year below us doing A-Level maths already!

Im going on to do A-Levels in psychology, English literature and history, and I want to carry on and do psychology atuniversity. I think people know the school has been taken over, but they dont realise to what extent. Its much more than just aname change.

Molly FitzakerleyBefore Outwood took over my grades werent very good, but recently Ive had more support and Im getting up to target. Theyhave also helped with my confidence. I have always wanted to be a dancer, but I dont want to move away at this age. Im doinga full time dance course at Hillsborough and hopefully will go on to dance in places like London.

Zora Fearnehough Student PresidentBefore Outwood came I remember thinking Id be happy with an office job and scraping Cs and now Im getting As and Bs. I wantto go to Hillsborough College and do a BTEC in sport and exercise science and hopefully go on to university to be a PE teacher.

The atmosphere at school is very encouraging now and the teachers are constantly asking us to think about what we aredoing. They push us to do our UCAS, help us get our grades and go further, and it makes you think, I can actually do this, I can bewhat I want to be. The school moulds you as a person.
