It was a very special day and so Raza was wearinghis best clothes Today he was going to meetsomeone very important ndash His Majesty JalaluddinAkbar the great Mughal king Razarsquos father Rahmat Khan was an important mantoo He was the royal tailor to the king and hestitched all his angarakhas ndash the loose coats that theking wore over his tight churidar pyjamas This morning they were going to the palace inFatehpur Sikri with the angarakhas the king hadordered for summer The king was very fussy abouthis clothes and it was very hard to please him

Rahmat Khan had worked hard to make theangarakhas ndash cutting and stitching late into thenight Raza had helped too ndash putting in tiny stitchesusing the finest needle and the best silken thread The spring sun shone brightly the flowers smiledand the pigeons cooed happily as the two of themwalked to the fortress of Fatehpur Sikri Two soldiersholding spears stood guarding the gate

ldquoIrsquom Rahmat Khanrdquo Razarsquos father said ldquoIrsquom theangarakha maker to His Majesty and Irsquove broughtnew sets for himrdquo ldquoIs His Majesty expecting yourdquo the guard with bigmoustaches askedldquoJi huzoor He chose the designs himselfrdquoldquoWait hererdquo the guard turned to go inside ldquoIrsquoll callthe Royal Stewardrdquo

After a while the guard returned with another manRahmat bowed to him ldquoIrsquove brought the summerclothes Dhanijirdquo he said ldquoGood Come with me His Majesty is still in hissleeping chamber Hersquoll see you before he leaves forthe royal courtrdquo

As they walked in Raza whispered ldquoWho is heAbburdquo ldquoDhani Singh He works in the Khwabgahrdquo ldquoKhwabgahrdquo ldquoThe kingrsquos personal palace where he has hissitting room and bedroomrdquo It was a long walk Raza looked around his eyeswide with wonder The Mughal palaces were sobeautiful All made of red sandstone with slimcarved pillars and curving arches

In between were gardens filled with flowers lilypools and sparkling fountains Raza thought he wasin heaven

As they waited at the door of the kingrsquos bedroomRaza studied Dhani Singh Being a tailorrsquos son henoticed the clothes first Dhani Singh was wearing a cotton angarakha in ared and white flowery print over white churidars Hisnagra shoes had pointed toes that curved inwardHe had tied a narrow cloth belt a patka at his waist

What Raza liked most was his bright red turbanprinted with a design in white and yellow squaresand dots

ldquoYour turban is very nice Dhanijirdquo he said ldquothatrsquos areally pretty designrdquo ldquoThank you I come from the land of the Rajputsand this design called bandhani is from myhomelandrdquo As they entered the room Razarsquos heart wasthudding Sunlight poured in through the archeddoorways lighting up the thick silken Persian carpetwoven in jewelled colours The room was furnishedwith a beautifully carved bed and exquisite chairsThere were silk and gold cushions on the low bedEven the curtains were made of silk

Raza bowed and then looked at his king Akbar waschoosing jewellery from a box held before him by aservant

He was not very tall but he had the broad shouldersof a sword-fighter He had large slightly slantedeyes a drooping moustache and a small moleabove his lips

Hearing them enter Akbar turned and smiled ldquoAhRahmat Yoursquove brought the angarakhas And whois this boy with yourdquo ldquoMy son Raza huzoorrdquoldquoAnd can you stitch too RazardquoldquoIrsquom learning huzoorrdquo Raza replied nervously ldquobutI still make mistakes in cutting the clothrdquoldquoYoursquoll learn Your father will teach yourdquo Akbar saidgently Rahmat opened the bundle and laid out theangarakhas on the bed

They were made of the finest muslin and coveredwith delicate embroidery All of them were in lightsummery colours ndash cream lemon pale blue greenand a sparkling white Raza knew the kingrsquosfavourite colour was white Rahmat helped Akbar put on a white angarakhaThen Dhani Singh brought a large mirror and held itbefore the king

ldquoI like the embroidery and it fits well toordquo Akbarsaid looking pleased ldquoNow tie a patka Letrsquos seehow it looksrdquo Rahmat took out a handful of belts and tied a lightblue one around Akbarrsquos waist letting the fringedends hang in frontldquoNohelliprdquo said Akbar moodily ldquothis is too palehellip I wantsomething brighterrdquo

Raza and his father then tried one patka afteranother ndash green and yellow orange and purple butnothing pleased Akbar ldquoI donrsquot like any of the colours Rahmatrdquo Akbar saidfrowning impatiently Raza saw that his father wasbeginning to look worried Oh no If His Majesty didnot like the patkas would he send all the clothesback ldquoI have to do something fastrdquo Raza thought He looked around and said suddenly ldquoHuzoorwould you like to try a bright red one with a whiteand yellow designrdquoldquoWhat kind of redrdquo Akbar boomed ldquoShow merdquoRaza pointed to Dhani Singhrsquos turban ldquoThat redrdquoldquoHmmmhelliprdquo Akbar stared thoughtfully at DhaniSinghrsquos moustached face and said ldquoLet me give it atryrdquo

In a flash Raza had taken off Dhani Singhrsquos turbanunrolled it and tied it around Akbarrsquos waist Hewaited with bated breath while Akbar studied hisreflection in the mirror He noticed Dhani Singhgrinning widely ndash he must have been amused to seethe king wearing his turban as a belt ldquoI like the colourhellip and a new design toordquo Akbarsaid finallyldquoBandhani huzoorhellip from the land of the Rajputsrdquosaid Raza promptly ldquoAha Rajput like my queen Jodh Bairdquo Akbar beganto smile ldquoDhani pay Rahmat for the angarakhasand patkas Irsquoll take them allrdquo

ldquoHuzoorrdquo asked Raza cautiously ldquoDhaniji needs aturban Wersquove taken the one he was wearingrdquoldquoGive him a patkardquo laughed Akbar ldquoThat boringpale blue one I am keeping his turbanrdquo
