CAPTIONS IN THESIS WRITING

PGS-502 (Technical Writing & Communication Skills)

Course in-charge Dr.R.Philip Sridharan

SSNAIK

What is an illustration ?

Illustration:

An illustration is a drawing, painting or printed work of art which explains, clarifies, illuminates, visually represents, or merely decorates a written text, which may be of a literary or commercial nature.

Difference between the text and illustration?

The process of pathogenesis begins with Adhesion of fungal infective units or conidium to the insect epicuticle

Germination of infective units on cuticle, Penetration of the cuticle

Multiplication in the haemolymph Death of the host (Nutritional

deficiency , destruction of tissues and releasingtoxins) Mycelial growth with invasion of all host organs

Penetration of hyphae from the interior through the cuticle to exterior of the insect Production of infective conidia on the exterior of the insect.

Most of the entomopathogenic fungi infect their hosts by penetration of the

cuticle by producing cuticle digesting enzymes ( Proteases lipases chitinases). The typical symptoms of fungal infection are, mummified body of insects and it does not disintegrate in water and body covered with filamentous mycelium

Where we have to mention the list of illustration in our thesis ?

Illustrations

List the name of each figure or illustration, included in the body of your dissertation or thesis.

It should give the number of the page that it appears on give a descriptive title (not 'Figure 1', 'Table 1' etc.).

You do not need to give reference details here. Include these in a citation next to the figure itself

and in your Reference List or Bibliography. The List of illustrations is positioned after the

Contents page (on a separate page) and before the Introduction.

Since material written to teach or inform usually needs illustrations to support the text, it becomes part of the author’s job to suggest the illustrations in the manuscript.

1. Pick the passages to be illustrated -Pick the passages that you want illustrated while you

are writing; don’t wait until you have done all the writing to go back through the manuscript, slapping in pictures here and there.

2. Choose illustrations for your particular text

3. Integrate illustrations and text

Once you have decided on the illustrations, you must integrate them with the text. You can do this by:

a) Putting illustrations near the text they support,b) Making timely and adequate references to the illustrations,c) Discussing them in detail in your writing.

4.How to prepare illustrations - You should label all necessary parts - You should give the illustration a good talking caption. - You should decide how large the reproduced illustration should be

1.Photographs:

A photograph or photo is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film or an electronic medium . Most photographs are created using a camera, which uses a lens to focus the scene's visible wavelengths of light into a reproduction of what the human eye would see. The process and practice of creating photographs is called photography.

Choose whether to insert your images within your chapters, at the end of chapters, or in a separate appendix at the end of your thesis. (Consult your thesis advisor.)

“photograph title” will display in your List of Figures

“ Image caption” will not display in your List of Figures. (Use this for any annotative descriptions of the image.)

Keep your figures in separate files until you are ready to compile your Complete thesis.

But if you are going to create photographs in Word, create them in a file based on the Chapter Template.

This way when you go to insert the photographs into your full thesis document, the formatting will look the same.

Generally figures/photographs are included the page after they are mentioned, without leaving a gap at the bottom of the page before the figure. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell Word "put the figure on the page after it is first mentioned". When you go to insert your photographs .

Generating photographs:

Examples: We should not leave the top of the page if one photograph is one.

Page

If two photographs are there we should have to follow the page specifications.

2” gap should be there.
