Chronic doodlers since preschool.
The Discovering the Civil War exhibit marked the sesquicentennial of the Civil War and featured touch-screen interactives incorporating social media tools. It was uniquely arranged by themes such as “Spies and Conspiracies” versus a chronological approach.

Discovering the Civil War
National Archives, keeper of our country’s records for almost 100 years, wanted to take a key story of the Civil War, the voyage of the CSS Alabama, and make it appeal to tweens. Timbuktoons was contacted to develop comic book styled illustrations for an interactive exhibit along with an exhibit teaser video. The illustrations all correlated to specific archived documents chronicling the journey of the confederate “pirate” ship from construction to its final battle.
The illustrations were so well received that Archives commissioned two follow-up projects to be produced and sold along with their traveling exhibit: a 16-page comic book and accompanying motion graphic novel on DVD.
Challenge•Use relevant style and
media formats to connect history to a middle-school target age
•Write in script form the story of a key Civil War battle from numerous historical documents
•Balancing historical accuracy with creative storytelling
Solution•15 action comic styled
panels for an interactive display
•animated teaser for the CSS Alabama exhibit featured on the Washington Post website
•a 16-page comic book with accompanying motion comic on DVD

Graebel, the leader in relocation and moving services worldwide, needed high-quality storyboards to pitch their services to a high-profile client.
Graebel is the leader in relocation and moving services worldwide. When a major client asked Graebel to storyboard the best possible moving service, Timbuktoons was chosen to develop a series of presentation panels to illustrate the Graebel high-touch customer service that’s matched with its cutting edge technology.
Timbuktoons approached the quick-turnaround project the same way we handle storyboards for animation or production boards for film. The Graebel team wrote the script and Timbuktoons illustrated the character design and backgrounds for each panel. The panels were then printed in large format by Graebel and were met with ‘applause’ following the team’s successful presentation.
Challenge•Use a modern, trendy
art direction to portray Graebel employees
• Illustrate the Graebel customer experience in story form
•Highlight services featuing the client’s technology
•Quick turnaround (less than one week)
Solution•14 panels, 4 character
designs and 6 background designs were created
•Treated the illustrations like storyboards for a commercial or film
•Featured different hardware mocked-up with Graebel’s unique software
•Crewed up quickly to handle production and completed the project before the deadline
