2020 Potentate’s Message
Hello Nobles, Ladies and Freinds
Greetings and cheers to all! As we begin our trek for the New Year throughout the MIRZA jurisdiction, I must fi rst thank the entire nobility for this great honor and opportunity to serve as your 2020 MIRZA Shrine Potentate. We anticipate a fun year right from the start and hope to enjoy many a memorable times throughout the year. We chose not to hand out calendars the night of installation as we will be mailing them out to every current dues paying noble along with a cover letter explaining the events planned for the year, the calendar is of course already posted on our Mirza website as well. We will be adding a few new events this year beginning with a cornhole/shrimp boil at the temple in September, a wine tasting April 25th, and a festival of trees beginning in late November, wealso plan to off er a temple Christmas party giving our clubs and units the opportunity to come together as one and enjoy a grand time, date to be announced. We did cancel the Kentucky Derby tripdue to lack of interest, for those still wanting to break out of the mold the Potentate and First Lady will be volunteering at the PGA SHC open in Las Vegas again this year in early October and invite all of you to experience this with us. Shake off the dust, grab a friend, and attend a meeting/event or two, but mostimportantly, please don’t forget to make time for your family. Fraternally yours,Illustrious Sir, Rick Horn.

2020 First Lady’s Message
Hello to all the Shriners and their Ladies!
First off , I would like to introduce myself as the First Lady of Mirza Shrine for the year 2020. Yes, that is a little dig at “Rickypoo” since he completely forgot who I was and to introduce me on Election night! LOL........love you dear.I want to thank Sharon Matlock, the Chief Aides and everyone else who helped with hosting the reception at the Annual meeting and Election night. Th ere was such a personal touch and Rick and I appreciated it. We really wanted Rudy and Roxy to join us that night but they would have gobbled up all that good food and left none for us to enjoy!Year aft er year, there is always donations made to Mirza that are so generous. Rick and I will use the money during our year wisely to promote Mirza Shrine and to market Shriners Hospitals for Children so no child is left behind and not treated. Th ank you from the bottom of our hearts, the donations were appreciated.Rick have been talking about 2020 for some time now and there will be some changes to include NEW exciting events coming up in the future. As the dates draw closer, there will be more information released.I am looking forward to the upcoming year and will do my best to support Rick as he leads Mirza Shrine as the 2020 Potentate. We are also grateful for the awesome Divan members that will be accompanying us during 2020.Visitations start soon and we all look forward to socializing with everyone and enjoying a great meal with each other.
HERE FOR KIDS!Your First Lady of Shrine,Tonya Shaughnessy

PAST POTENTATE’S MESSSAGE
Th is year has gone by so fast. I’ve enjoyed serving as your potentate this year. Th ank you to Dave Hensley for appointing me to the Divan line. As we progressed up the line, we met so many nice people we would not have met if we would not have done this. We attended Imperial Shrine sessions and CSSA sessions. We enjoyed the opportunity to visit these cities and to meet and make new friends. Th ank you to my Divan for all of your hard work and support. It has been a pleasure working beside all of you as we “helped kids cross the fi nish line” on their medical journey. Th ank you to everyone who helped me along the way to be Potentate. To those who took time to answer my many questions and who have off ered words of encouragement. Th ank you to all the clubs and units for your support this past year. I enjoyed visiting your areas and working with you. As my year ends, I want to wish Rick Horn all the best for 2020. Th anks again for allowing me the opportunity to be your Potentate for 2019Mike CarnesPast Potentate-Mirza Shrine
Hensley for the faith and confi dence he showed to us when he appointed Mike to the Divan Line. Th is has been a humbling experience and such an honor to serve as your Potentate and First Lady. Our journey up the line was a good one fi lled with lots of laughter and a few tears. We lost friends and family members along the way. We had the joy of seeing our youngest daughter get married and will soon make us grandparents. We have gotten to travel to Imperial Shrine and CSSA. Getting to experience what makes Shriners so special. We’ve seen our very good friend become Imperial Potentate. What an honor. We have had an outstanding Divan line. I know every Potentate thinks he had the “best” Divan line but ours truly was the “best”.We could not have done this without the love and support of our Divan family. We have made friendships that will last a lifetime. We love each and every one of you.We want to thank everyone that has had a part in helping us through this year.A special thanks to our family and especially our daughters for their patience and understanding when we had to miss events due to our shrine calendar. It is bittersweet as I turn this position over to Tonya your new First Lady of Mirza Shrine. I wish her nothing but the best and I know she is going to do great things as your First Lady.Th ank you for allowing me to serve as your First Lady for 2019.
PAST FIRST LADY’S MESSAGE
Hello EveryoneIt is hard to believe that I am writing this as past fi rst lady of Mirza Shrine. It is hard to comprehend that our year is over.Th is has been an incredible journey. We want to thank Dave

Past Chaplain’s NotesBy Darrell Orender, PP, Chaplain
Grace and peace to all of our Mirza Nobles & Ladies from the Supreme Architect of the Universe from whom all blessings fl ow.
Our 2019 journey is complete. We can now refl ect fondly on the good times we had with family, friends and our Shrine family. Th e advent of the new year of 2020 brings with it the hopes, plans, and challenges as well as the excitement of a new Shrine year. Let us warmly welcome our new Potentate and his Divan and support them in their respective projects and endeavors. I trust all Nobles & Ladies will lift them up in your prayers and ask that His divine hand of protection and guidance rest upon them.
As I conclude my three years as your Chaplain I would like to thank the Nobles & Ladies of Mirza for their friendship and support. Th ere is a hymn that says, “I know not what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.” My prayer is that each Noble & Lady knows the “One Who Holds the Future.” Mirza’s 2020 calendar will be packed with many events to enjoy. So don’t sit idle, get out there with your Shrine family and enjoy your club & unit picnics, parades.
May the Lord bless & keep thee and make His countenance shine upon thee and give thee peace.
So Mote It Be,
Darrell

Club & Unit News
Hardly Abe Fire Co By Johnny Gillham, P.P., Sec We continue to meet at Iola Masonic Lodge for our regular meetings. Brother Danny and Lady Ginny do an excellent job of providing chefs choice meals for our group. We have good attendance but as with all units we could use new unit members. If interested let one of our unit members know and will get info for you.
At this time we have participated at the Stark parade and in the Blue Mound 4th July parade. Noble T F Edmonds elected to watch the parade this year. T F was part of the charter group for
the annual 4th celebration. Since our last article did not make the printing we have paraded at Elsmore, Moran, Kincaid and Iola Farm City days. Our Unit and members do appreciate the show of support from these communities and people while helping to showcase the philanthropy of Shriners Hospitals for Children. We appreciate the Nobles and Ladies for the hospitality they provide for our unit at these local events. We have also gained a new member into our Unit. New Noble Mary Werner and his Lady Stacy. Th ey have visited our unit during the year and aft er his travel through the hot sands they have decided to join our group. We congratulate them and welcome their participation. We thank Assistant Rabban Tom Zortz and his Lady Dee for keeping our unit informed of the various happenings and opportunities within our Shrine jurisdiction. We also take time thank Illustrious Sir Mike Carnes on a successful year and congratulate our incoming Illustrious Sir Rick Horn as he assumes the reins of Mirza Shrine. May his direction be straight and true. In closing let us remember those members that continue to have health issues and also be mindful that the Black Camel continues to deplete our ranks. Be proud to be a Shriner and Mason and remember every day is membership day.

These We Do Not Forget
WHEN WE SPEAK OF THE SHRINERS HOSPITALS
Everyone connected with Shriners Hospitals for Children is invested in improving the lives of children. We want to reach the children who need the expert care our health care system can provide; we want the public to understand our unique approach and our commitment to the children and families we care for; and we want our donors and potential donors to feel they are part of our special mission, and know their generosity is both needed and appreciated.
Th ose are important goals. In order to achieve them we need our messages to be accurate and consistent – from print materials to electronic media.
It is imperative that we stress the expert, quality care provided at Shriners Hospitals for Children. We want our patients to choose our hospitals because they believe they will receive the best care we have to off er, regardless of fi nancial considerations.
Th at said, the services provided by Shriners Hospital for Children are not free – we have a multimillion dollar budget for patient care. And when the phrase “free care” is used it can be confusing, and dilute our messages, including our great need for donors.
Here is the approved statement from our style guide on this topic:
“All care and services are provided regardless of the families’ ability to pay” is the correct phrase to use when describing the cost of care. Do not use free, at no cost, at no charge or without fi nancial obligation.
Please take a moment to check your materials, including your websites, and make sure we are all communicating consistently. It is critically important to the strength and success of our message. If we all speak with one clear, consistent voice, imagine the impact we could have.
