The first festival of this biennial event was staged in the summer of 1978, organised for the enjoyment of the local people and boating community and to celebrate the opening of the river link from Bedford to the Wash. The festival has grown considerably since then with five music stages, a Market Village, fireworks, diverse and interesting river events and water sports arena programme, and this year in celebration of the borough’s charter granted in 1166 the Heritage Village will recreate 11th century Bedford at Castle Mound. The ethos behind the festival has remained since it’s humble beginnings, a fantastic free family festival, reflecting Bedford, celebrating the Embankment and river, as well as the wealth of music, culture and entertainment our community has to offer, alongside the fabulous opportunities for local businesses and services.
