Notes from the Bridge

Welcome to the “official” first month of the 2015 season, al-though many of us have already been taking full advantage of our Club. May had some wonderfully attended events, and it was great to see several new faces (along with many of the “old” ones…..).

Make sure you have the June events on your calendar, including swim meets, Second Saturday at the Tiki Bar, Father’s Day Lunch and the Luau/Pig Roast. There is something for everyone to enjoy, even if it is just sitting on the deck watching the river go by - an activity we highly recommend!

Our Club continues to do well financially, given the diligence of our management and staff, and the efforts of our members to come down to enjoy the club. We budgeted conservatively, and are happy to see better than expected performance. We couldn’t do that without each and every one of you, so thank you.

We, on the Bridge, also like to point out, from time to time, the hard work and efforts of the Board members. Each provides so much value to the Club, much behind the scenes, and we would encourage the members to share our sentiments.

Here’s to what should be a wonderful summer, look forward to seeing you at our Club!

The IVY Club rocked the Race for the Cure!

Kim Sanders, Carol Straub, Kim LeHew, Anne Ford, Nancy Scott, Jenna Sanders, Diane Rickard, Sue Ward. They were co-chairwomen of the survivors’ tent this year.

Pool NotesWarm days are here with many more ahead. The pool will be ready to go for all members on Saturday May 23rd at 10:30 AM if “Mother Nature” continues to cooperate! Many thanks go out to the dedicated individuals who worked so very diligently to ready the pool during our Dock Days on May 2 & 3. We could not be ready to open this year without the great support of our “pool people” who have been doing the grunt work to prepare our pool for opening over the past several years. Again, thank you for all of your help! A special thank you goes out to Pam and her “crew” for making it all take place again this year.

Swim team practice will begin on Monday, June 1, 2015. Those 11 and up will practice from 9:00 – 10:00 AM, and those 10 and under will practice from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. This is a flip of times from last year. If you want to find out more informa-tion on swim team, team suits, apparel, and other pool fun, please check the IVY Club website at www.ivyclub.org click “on the water” then click on “Pool”.

Swim lessons are also set for this summer. Monday & Wednesday afternoons Foggy Froggy Swim School will take place. More information is also available on the new IVY Website.

We hope to again offer water aerobics at 11:00 AM on Fridays throughout the summer for a very affordable fee. Be watch-ing the IVY Leaf and our website for more information as it becomes available.

Don’t forget to bring your cans to the pool (for recycling of course!) We are always collecting soda and beer cans for re-cycling to help the pool and swim team afford those little extras. The summer sun has also taken its toll on several of our old plastic Adirondak deck chairs and small white plastic tables so we will have a few less available for member use. If you would like to help out with the effort to replace some of those items, please contact me or speak to one of the pool staff.Hope to see you at the pool on opening day! John Meisinger

Sailboat Racing NewsThe IVY Club sailboat racing season has gotten off to a hurried start. NOAA - Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service had predicted that the river would flood and come up to 18+ feet by the first Saturday race. The sailors scrambled to get their boats launched while the hoist was still above water. As it turned out, NOAA’s estimate was in error and the river never came above the launch area, but the sailors were ready to race. Some of these sailors did not get their boat bottoms prepared and now face the task of pulling the boats out again, and finishing them properly. In the meantime, these sailors may sail a little slower because of the dried on algae, slime, and barnacles from last year.

Boat bottoms are not the only factors that slow down the early season racers. The crews are also a little bit out of practice, and so their response to situations, wind, and competition may be a little rough. To compensate, the skippers may leave a little more room between them and the other boats, which shows up in the racing results. Take heart though, the crews learn fast and so do the skippers, and soon we will again be racing in very close formation.

The river is high, and that gives back the advantage that the deep keel boats have over the Capri boats. ESCAPE was able to sail with the keel all the way down, but with only the skipper and one crew, sail handling was a problem. This allowed the Capri boats to stay close, and downwind pass and go ahead. If the river stays up and the crew number improves on ESCAPE, they may again be able to show its capabilities in high water.

The rest of the fleet was in pretty good shape. The boats had their full crews and Norm Astwood “Phoolish” experimented with new sails. Patrick Gudat was sailing the Capri previously owned by Patty Cirilli, and renamed “Zephyr”. Roger Huber will skipper Zephyr during the Wednesday evening races, starting in June 2015. May Roger find fair winds and good fortune in his sailing and racing adventures, and may Patty find joy in her new environment.

Many thanks to the Race Committee, who again come out and support the racing sailors in their struggles and triumphs to win the sailboat races at the IVY Club. I’ll see you on the water! Adam

We’re Glad You’re Here!

The council worked with florists, tobacconists, stationers and men’s clothiers across the United States to promote Father’s Day. Their slogan? “Give Dad Something To Wear!”

President Calvin Coolidge had originally recommended that Father’s Day become an official observance in 1924. But it took YEARS, until 1972, when President Nixon signed a proclamation proclaiming the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

In 1938, the Associated Men’s Wear Retailers of New York City set up The National Council for the Promotion of Father’s Day.
