Illinois Music Education Association 2017 Composition Contest 1. Any 6 th –8 th grade student may enter the junior high school competition and any 9 th –12 th grade student (up to one contest post- graduation) is eligible to enter the senior high school competition. The submission must be composed in the calendar year leading up to the contest entry. 2. Each student may enter only one composition in each of the categories, but students may enter as many categories as they desire. 3. Each entry must be accompanied by (1) a completed entry form and (2) $15 entry fee. 4. All compositions should have a title or an opus number. 5. A CD recording of the composition must accomany each entry. With the exeception of the Avant Garde/Electronic category, recordings should be performed on the appropriate voice of instruments rather than computer-generated sounds, whenever possible. Audio files must be in .mp3 format. 6. Two copies of a legible score must accompany all but the Avant Garde/Electronic, Jazz Improvisation and Remix entries. 7. Entries in the Commercial/Pop category that could be classified as “popular music” may be submitted with two copies of the lyric and chords sheet. Entries classified as “commerical” (including film scores) must include two copies of the score. 8. All measures must be numbered in the scores. 9. The scores and CDs should bear only the title and student ID number (school-assigned number or social security number). No names should appear on the scores or CDs for all entries are judged anonymously. 10. All remixes must be under five minutes in length and utilize some portion of the audio supplied by ILMEA at http://www.ilmea.org/ divisions/jsgm/remix. Due to copyright restrictions, remixes can only use the provided audio samples and original sounds created by the composer. By entering the contest, the student and their sponsoring teacher understand that the audio samples can only be used for the ILMEA Composition Contest and cannot be used for any other reason. Failure to comply with these regulations would put you in violation of copyright. For all information related to the remix category, visit the website linked above. 11. All recordings, scores, and entry forms must be postmarked on or before November 1, 2016. The JSGM Division President has the authority to refuse any entries postmarked after the deadline. 12. All materials submitted will be kept by ILMEA. No materials will be returned to the student. ILMEA reserves the right to use student compositions for publicity and/or display of exemplary work. This use may include an audio file of the composition included on an official ILMEA compilation recording and the posting of an audio file of the composition on the ILMEA website for a period of one year. 13. Winners will be notified in the first week of December (based on timing of results generated by the adjudication panel). Several winning compositions will be selected for performance during the Awards Ceremony and Showcase Concert at the 2017 Illinois Music Education Conference. If chosen for performance, a winning composition must be presented in its original form without additions or changes. 14. The JSGM Division President has the authority to disqualify any compositions that do not comply with the contest rules.
