Motorist Awareness Coordinator

Virgil Booker

A note from your IL District Motorist Awareness Coordinator Hello Goldwing friends, family and team. It is my Honor

to serve you as your new Illinois District Motorist Awareness Coordinator.

Please join me in thanking Tony Lasher for a job well done! Tony has

stepped up by joining our National M.A.P. Team. I look forward to my

opportunity to work with MAP team members Barb & Marvin Prather and

Richard Sledgister. Our Map team is looking for more members to help, if

you would like to become a member of the IL M.A.P Team please contact

me.

(What is Motorist Awareness?)

The GWRRA Motorist Awareness Program is an outreach program designed

to focus on spreading awareness to the motorist community. We reach out

to the motoring public through presentations to various local organizations,

such as high school drivers Ed, lions clubs, rotary clubs, churches, chamber

of commerce and local businesses the list is endless. We also participate in

exhibits at bike/car shows, fairs etc. We also do public service announcements;

distribute motorist awareness materials, pamphlets, yard signs, banner

placements and so much more.

The Moto of the Motorist Awareness Program is Drivers and Riders United for Safety. Our aim is to educate the nation’s drivers to look out for motor-cycle riders, bicyclists and pedestrians. The Goal of the Motorist Awareness Program is to reduce accidents, through

awareness and education. We want motorcyclists treated with the same

respect and courtesy that is offered to other motorists that share our road-

way. Please remember that “Respect” has to be earned by observing and

obeying all traffic laws, signs and signals. Be polite while riding and set the

example for other motorist and please remember to wear all the gear all

the time, stay focused. 66 percent of all accidents occur because motorists

are distracted, most motorcycle accidents happen when making left turns

and failure to negotiate curves. Motorist awareness works hand in hand

with "RIDER EDUCATION” Practice your riding skills in a parking lot with a

certified course instructor. A motorcycle license makes a motorcyclist a

beginner please reduce your chance of having an accident by participating

and practicing in a parking lot, become a master of your motorcycling

skills. “LIVES DEPEND ON IT”

Next year, the TA class trailer licensing fee increases from

$18 to $118. I'm sure you'll agree that this makes no sense for our

motorcycle trailers, since that is more than twice the fee of the

motorcycle license.

Please contact your state senator and state representative to bring

this to their attention. If all of us do this, whether you own a

trailer or not, we are sure to get their attention.

Below is the text I used in contacting my state reps.

You can find your representatives at this website. Just type in your full address, including state, and

click the button.

In reviewing the new 2020 licensing fees I noticed that TA trailer fees are going up from $18 to $118.

The problem is that most, if not all, motorcycle trailers, i.e. trailers pulled by motorcycles and not trailers

intended to carry motorcycles, are TA class trailers. So $118 is more than twice the license fee of the

motorcycle itself. I'm sure you'll agree that this makes no sense.

Please remedy this problem before licenses come due in 2020.

Thank you.

Article from North American Rider

July 2019 issue

The Exhaust Pipe is not the Only Source of Noise

As an activity, riding a motorcycle is like anything else, your job, other hobbies, other interests, they all

come with a language or a list of words that have specific meanings to that area. The motorcycling world

could be a leader in catch phrases and jargon. So often, the exhaust that is center lower on our face may

make more noise than the chrome cylinder pointed out the back of the bike. So why should we be concerned

with what we say and how we say it? If you don’t know, the industry is going through a slowing period,

and more people are aging out than joining in. What does that matter? If you like your own bike, on your

own stretch of road without company, you might just hold on to the “Who Cares” attitude. Defiance and

non-conformity are certainly elements that made riding on two wheels what it is today.

However, if the numbers of us throwing a leg over the saddle continues to dwindle, that leaves us with

less of a voice. Your pipes might be loud, but a symphony of un-baffled pipes makes the music louder.

With fewer of us involved, the lower the noise, the fewer choices and the lower the freedom. Being that

non-conformer on your our piece of art becomes more difficult. Our rights as riders could also start to

fade away. You might have seen the battles with motorcycle-only checkpoints. Not to mention more laws

on licensing and the requirements to wear certain equipment. All that could alter your experience while

you are out in the wind.

Over the past year, I have referred to the Give-a-Shift Conference that met to discuss the slacking

motorcycle sales and what can be done about it. One of their findings is that we are often not great

ambassadors for our shared passion. It all goes back to those phrases we have been conditioned to tell

each other and non-riders. Phrases that seem innocent like, “Keep the Rubber on the Road,” or “Keep the

Shiny Side Up,” and others seem to imply that even seasoned riders may create their own accidents.

Instead we should encourage the experience, that smile we all wear while cruising down the road.

A fellow rider that I follow is “Long Haul” Paul who seeks to cover a million miles in his effort to raise

awareness and fund a cure for Multiple Sclerosis, or MS (as of this writing, he is a third of the way there).

In a recent post he mentioned how many times he is told to “Ride Safe” or “Be Careful Out There”.

Yes, he is riding for a cause, but he is also riding for a lot of the reasons we all do: Freedom, Relaxation

and Fun. So he asked himself, “Why don’t we wish that upon each other?” When a non-rider asks us

about how dangerous it is, why do we talk about What we have to look out for? or How we have to act

like we are invisible? Danger, Danger, Danger. Shouldn’t our first reaction to be the fun we have, the

things we see, and that fresh country air we all enjoy? (okay, that air isn’t always so fresh) says Paul.

As I have mentioned, it’s not just us interacting amongst ourselves. Whether you realize it or not, others

watch and hear us. It could be out of curiosity, and more than passing interest to join us. If you are like

me, you proudly wear evidence on your cage in the form of a bumper sticker. Something like “Look

Twice, Save a Life”. As Paul promotes, we should raise awareness we are out there, and the reason why

we are out here. He has stickers blazoned with “Look Twice, Riders Having Fun” available on his web-

site. We need to promote that image. The one we all have after a day of riding, you know the one, where

you think you can’t get your helmet off over the grin.

While the right gear can always protect us, knowledge and experience is what really keeps us safe.

Enjoyment is what brings back to ride some more miles. So when someone asks about the risks, tell

them about the rewards. Isn’t that what any good sales person does? Think about Stock Brokers, do

they tell you how much you might lose, or what their average gain is? We all buy into benefits, so let’s

talk them up!

Whether you ride alone, with some friends, or in an organized group, we really all ride together. We all

buy from the same options, and we all hit the same asphalt, so we should stick together in a positive way

to keep our options and our fun.

Rodney Myers is Rider, a Writer, and Video Storyteller. He started riding around age 5. He made up stories

before he knew how to write, and was fortunate enough to attend a high school that had a television station.

Hello friends and Chapter Z family!

August has been another fun and action-packed month for us. The weather cooled

off and we got some much-needed rain.

The first few days of August were spent doing MAP rides and enjoying ourselves at

the Summer Rally in Olney, Illinois. The very first day there we rode through the

park and saw (and got a photo of) a World-famous white squirrel-WOW! We

checked into the Holiday Motel, our host hotel

for the rally. The first day we met in the park for

dinner and to meet with friends (some came

from as far away as Canada, Louisiana, Indiana,

and other states). After dinner there was a ride

and ice cream (we were tired and chose to return

to the hotel and rest). We had done several MAP

sites that day. The next day we went on a scenic

ride through the countryside to an Oil Museum

in Oblong (very interesting), early lunch at

Moonshine (famous for their

HUGE DELICIOUS burgers), then

to Vincennes, Indiana where we

toured a military museum and the

Red Skelton museum, both quite

enlightening. We returned to the

hotel for fun and games in the

afternoon and a ride through town

that evening. The next day started

with a flag parade through town,

returned to the park for a balloon release

in the grandstand to honor loved ones.

That afternoon more fun games (I loved

the monkey sling shot toss!!), bean bag

baseball (I was NOT the home run

queen this time!) where our team won

and had lots of fun. That evening was a

wonderful buffet dinner at the hotel followed by Casino Night

(we missed that and turned in early). It was a GREAT Summer

Rally!!

We have had dinner and ice cream rides along with a FUN visit

to Chapter G’s gathering at the Pizza Ranch in Sterling, Illinois.

Great food and fun with friends!

On Saturday, August 17th Chapter Z had their annual Poker Run

Fundraiser event. There was a scenic ride through the country

around Tremont followed by Avanti’s spaghetti and desserts.

After lunch there was a fun auction with gift bags and baskets. It

was a very fun day meeting friends, old and new, and enjoying great food. I am not sure the amount of money raised but

it was very well attended.

John and I are leaving Monday August 26 for Wing Ding in Nashville and we hope to travel to several MAP sites on the

way there. It has been SO much FUN visiting these courthouses and learning some history.

Enjoy the rest of the Summer because it will be cooling off soon!!

Ever have to explain to a non-rider why you ride?

Recently a co-worker started a conversation about motorcycles that

evolved into me trying to explain why I ride. I found that this was not an

easy task and got me to thinking a lot about it. She started out telling me

that her husband had a bike when they got married but got rid of it after

they had kids. Boy does that sound familiar. Now their kids are grown

but she would not want him to get one again. I gave her the standard

speech about safety, training and practice. She stated that she has seen

to much in the emergency rooms over the years. Again, I ask about how

many were wearing ATGATT and not drinking. Yes, there are risks but

we can take steps to minimize them. Then she asked it! Why do you

ride?

I started out talking about adventure, fun and freedom but it was very

hard to put into words. It occurred to me that there are many reasons to

ride and they change often. The main reason you ride will also determine

what kind of bike you ride. Looking for excitement, then you probably

ride a sport bike. Looking for adventure, a sport tourer is probably

for you. Is the biker image more important to you, how about a cruiser

or bagger? But if you’re like me and like to explore this great country

on a bike with adventure and excitement then it must be a Gold Wing.

This is the bike that gives me the most of all the reasons I ride.

I asked my friend if she had ever ridden with her husband and what she

thought about it. She said it was scary but exciting at the same time. She

then compared it to a recent white-water rafting trip she took. She told

me that she was scared the whole trip. But when it was done, she can’t

wait to do it again. She now understands why I ride. The best way I had

to explain it to her was its like drinking a cup of coffee. You can sit

and relax while you drink it and have a calm moment. Then the caffeine

kicks in and you’ll get a great pick me up. Riding can relax you or excite

you depending on what you are after at that moment. I still have a hard

time explaining why I ride but at the end of our conversation I could tell

she was not so apposed to him getting another bike if the time came.

Ride safely my friends

Brian

Chapter “O”

20th Anniversary

June 30th was Chapter O’s 20th Anniversary Picnic.

There were 63 individuals that attended. Nine chapters were represented.

The day was beautiful. The sun was shining, and the heat was tolerable. We were happy that the weatherman said there was only a 20% chance of rain. Chapter O members arrived early to decorate and prepare the food. As the guests arrived, they were greeted and given games to play. Individuals mingled with others, some catching up on old times and others catching up on future events. Finally, the chefs announced that the food was ready, and everyone lined up. The food was plentiful and very good. Compliments were given to all the chefs. After everyone ate, more games were played. Mary Adams, Illinois District Sr. Director presented the chapter with a Certificate of Achievement for Chapter O’s 20th Anniversary. The fun continued with attendance prizes being given out and a 50/50 drawing.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and are looking

forward to our 25th Anniversary party!

Chapter H2, Johnny Mohr

On June 25, 1994 my 12 year old foster grandson, Joey Catton, and I left for a motor-

cycle vacation trip to Canada and the eastern United States.

Having read an article another rider had written in one of the motorcycle magazines,

one of our goals was Chibaugamau, Quebec, the end of the road in Quebec Province.

Other planned stops were in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia before returning to the United States in Maine.

To start at the beginning, we headed straight north in the most beautiful weather a rider could ask for. Most of

the day was bright and sunny and about 80 degrees. Later that afternoon, it started raining about five minutes

after we set up camp on Lake Michigan.

The first scheduled stops were at Pictured Rocks National Seashore on Lake Superior. It is a very beautiful

area and only a day and a half from the Quad Cities. The south shore of Lake Superior all the way to Sioux St.

Marie is a very scenic ride with rugged coasts, sand beaches, light houses to visit, and Brimley State Park. This

was another great campground where we watched the sunset over the lake.

A tour of the Soo locks was in order before crossing into Canada and a great place to spend time watching the

ocean liners go through the locks.

Entering Canada was an experience we'd like to forget. Going through immigration, the first thing they asked

for was written proof from his mother that Joey could be traveling with me. After providing a full power of

attorney, birth certificate, and several other documents, and a police check with US authorities we were finally

granted permission to enter. Then came the vehicle inspection. After being asked if we were carrying any fire-

arms or other weapons, we only declared two knives not knowing mace is a weapon in Canada. Undeclared,

much more paperwork and confiscation of the mace, plus a much more thorough search of the bike and

camper including everything, even our dirty clothes. Finally we were permitted to enter after about an hour.

After breakfast on Tuesday in Foleyet, Ontario we entered the French section of Canada. With only two excep-

tions, that was the last English we heard until Friday evening. All road sign, menus, papers, and all the TV

programs on cable the night we spent in a motel in Senneterre, Quebec were in French.

Next stop, Chibougamau, Quebec. A small City of 10,000 French Canadians with not a thing to offer tourists

except the challenge of getting there. Leaving Chibougamau at the junction of routes 113 and 167 is a gas sta-

tion. The sign read (English version) "next gas 335 kilometers (About 210 miles), and they meant it! Camping

about half way in the Reserve Faunique Ashuapmushuan Provincial Park, we met a bilingual park attendant

who decided he better check us out with the authorities in the United States to see if we were wanted for kid-

napping or runaways or whatever. The next morning we decided he was disappointed when we checked out

OK.

The next morning we topped off the gas tank from the supply we were carrying and continued south. Arriving

in Ste. Simeon, Quebec in late afternoon, we crossed the St. Lawrence River by ferry that evening. Calm "seas"

and another beautiful sunset, after about two hours of riding in the rain that afternoon.

Page 12 Continued..

Friday was miserable; rain all day and cold, sometimes heavy enough to force us to stop for a while. Having

decided it was motel time again and paying $49.00 Canadian in Cambellton, New Brunswick, sure enough, it

stopped raining but it was good to get warm and dry out. We were wearing winter jackets and rain suits while

at home the temperature in the 90's and over 100 in Chicago.

Most of the next two days, we spent in New Brunswick with Sunday on the Bay of Fundy. Camping in Fundy

Provincial Park and touring the towns of Alma and Hopewell Cape were an experience. There is about 6 hours

and 20 minutes between high and low tide. During this time the water can rise or fall as much as 45 feet. In

both towns, you can actually walk on the ocean floor during low tide. In Hopewell Cape at The Rocks Park,

there are sirens to warn tourists to get to high ground because the water rises so quickly. Rivers feeding the

Bay of Fundy actually run backwards during the rising tide, and in St. John, New Brunswick, there is a revers-

ing water fall.

Monday was touring Nova Scotia which is a beautiful clean and friendly province. Camped, fished and swam

Monday night in Kenjimkujik Provincial Park, a very peaceful night with the loons on the lake.

We had a reservation for 1:00 pm on the "Princess of Acadia" ferry crossing the Bay of Fundy. The crossing

was just over three hours and 45 miles in length from Digby, NS to St. John NB and was as close as you can

get to an ocean cruise.

After leaving the ship, we headed south crossing back into the United States at Upper Mills, Maine about 5:30

pm Tuesday.

After spending Wednesday morning in Acadia National Park and swimming in the ocean in 52 degree water

(it had to be done) we headed west for home with a final stop in Niagara Falls on Friday evening. Crossing

New York State was the hottest day of our trip so a motel with air conditioning was welcomed that night. The

only time in two weeks we had air conditioning and TV in English, which to our surprise, neither of us really

missed.Leaving Buffalo, New York on Saturday morning, we ran the interstates and toll ways home. These

were the only super highways on the trip, but time was getting short. We arrived home on Sunday July 10th

with 4938 miles on the motorcycle with no trouble with the bike, trailer, or the passenger. A great trip and one

that will be remembered for many years by both Joey and myself.

We've all heard many bad things about traveling with kids, but this was an exception to the rule. Having trav-

eled alone for several years, I was having second thoughts of the responsibility of taking a twelve year old boy

on such a trip. A great responsibility but well worth it. Just watching him learn, enjoying the different things

we saw together, the fishing and swimming that I hadn't done in years made it all worthwhile.

We are both looking forward to our next trip - probably to the Rocky Mountains for another learning experi-

ence. (Joey and I enjoyed six more trips together including Alaska in 1996 and a total of 37 states.)

Our Motorist Awareness Program is made up of dedicated volunteers committed to

educating drivers to watch out for motorcycles. Many of our Chapters hold Motorist

Awareness events, especially during May, National Motorcycle Awareness Month.

These events are important to us from a safety and Chapter growth standpoint. That

said, I am asking for help from you, our Chapter Directors. After all, you are the

spark, catalyst, and that enthusiastic cheerleader who guides the direction of the

Chapter.

We are all familiar with the challenges many of our Chapters are facing, especially

with growth. With your help, I believe we can increase the probability of adding some

new folks to the Chapter and our organization, and it does not take many Chapter

participants and countless hours to do this. There are many places where we can set

up a Motorist Awareness Table, and businesses love to help out their community

with this type of exposure. A Chapter table with just 2-4 members promoting that we

are out there with motorcycles gives us the “Golden Opportunity” of talking to some-

one who might also be a motorcyclist. Pamphlets from our Program, along with

membership information including our tri-fold and 4-month free trial found in our

Gold Book, gives us a powerful motorist awareness and recruitment tool.

Naturally, the more motorcycles we have in the parking lot along with participants,

the stronger the impact and attention drawn to us. Candidly, I realize not everyone

wants to spend time doing this when they can be out riding their bikes. However, that

is why I am suggesting a smaller group so we are doing something more often. In this

case, the definition of “more often” is determined by you, the Chapter Director and

your Chapter Participants.

Our Chapters need to grow in order to survive, if not today, then tomorrow? I often

think about what Apollo Creed said to Rocky Balboa in Rocky III, “There is no tomorrow,

there is no tomorrow, there is no tomorrow.” Together, let’s see what we can do

today and not put off until tomorrow. Let us preserve our Chapter’s legacy. To all of

those that are part of the Motorist Awareness Program, along with all of our Officers,

thank you for all that you do!

Ride safe; be well. And, as always, remember that fun shall be the last word—so

HAVE FUN!
