About Us
This eisteddfod is run by a group of parents who are passionate about supporting the arts. We offer the
opportunity for entrants to perform for an audience and be critiqued by carefully selected professional
adjudicators.
All of the changes being made to this eisteddfod in are due to the valuable feedback from our participants
in previous years. We will uphold our professional standards whilst ensuring that this eisteddfod remains
the ‘FUN and FRIENDLY’ eisteddfod. All of our volunteer staff have current Working With Children Checks.
General Rules
• The adjudicator’s decision is final at no time should anyone approach or disrupt the adjudicator in any way, including lunch and dinner breaks.
• This is a no protest eisteddfod the adjudicators decision is FINAL.
• This eisteddfod is open to amateurs only.
• Age for entries is the age of the competitor as at the first day of competition, except for Troupes, which is the age of the eldest competitor at 1st January (not the average age) in the year of the competition.
• The committee reserves the right to amend, refuse or cancel sections where insufficient entries are received. Sections may be combined at the discretion of the committee. Large sections may be split at the discretion of the committee or adjudicator.
• Competitors must be ready to compete in the section and order in which their name appears in the programme, and must report backstage or to the official prior to the commencement of the section. Competitors will NOT be permitted to perform out of section.
• No person may take another person’s place in the programme.
• Competitors must report at least 1 section prior for improvisations.
• Section commencement times will not be provided aside from session commencement. It is the competitors’ responsibility to arrive in sufficient time to report.
• All competitors should avoid song lyrics or performance pieces that include words or subject matter that would be considered offensive or inappropriate for a family setting. Competitors using unacceptable lyrics, words or subject matter may be disqualified.
• Competitors must enter and compete in their own age group only.
• The promotion or sale of any products is prohibited at the eisteddfod unless authorised by the committee. Only sponsors will be considered.
• Mobile phones must be switched off in all auditoriums.
• No responsibility is taken for any injuries or lost property of anyone present at the Eisteddfod and entry to the eisteddfod is acknowledgement of acceptance of all rules and conditions.
• Smoking is NOT permitted in the grounds or on the school premises anywhere.
• The Eisteddfod Committee would appreciate any donation toward prizes. This could be in the form of money or prizes. Donations will be acknowledged in the program, provided it is received one month prior to the closing date of entries. A portion of funds raised from this eisteddfod support projects for Smiths Hill High School Arts Programme.
• The use of recorded and or sheet music is subject to copyright legislation. This eisteddfod will adhere to all copyright laws. For more information go to www.apra-amcos.com.au
• PROPS must be kept to a minimum to avoid delays between items. No props made of glass or china, No liquids, naked flames (candles/matches) or any hazardous materials will be permitted on stage.
Exclusions
• No person associated with the running of this eisteddfod may enter this eisteddfod.
• Dance students of Joanne Grace School of Dance may NOT enter Dance sections.

Venue Information We have been very fortunate to be granted use of the facilities and grounds at St Mary’s Star of the Sea
College. Please help us to ensure our good relationship continues by being respectful of the grounds,
parking spaces and neighbours. Please refrain from parking in the church designated car park adjacent to
the Cathedral. We have use of state of the art sound and lighting as well as a fully equipped kitchen for our
canteen and clean comfortable change rooms and spaces. Troupes Days as well as all solo events will be
held in the SGN hall on the 1st and 2nd April and the 8th to 13th April, with a presentation to be held on the
closing evening of the competition on the 13th April.
Signage will be posted around each campus and our staff will be available to give directions. Campus maps
are printed at the rear of this program.
Accommodation We recommend the lovely Adina Apartment Hotel. The Adina is just down the street in an ideal location to
our venue and local city shopping and restaurants. It is located at 19 Market Street Wollongong NSW 2500.
Parking We ask that you be mindful of local residents and respect their need for access to their homes and
driveways. Please refrain from parking in the church designated car park adjacent to the Cathedral.
Change rooms
There are male and female toilets and change rooms available. We will have additional rooms available for
changing on troupe day.
Canteen
The committee will run a canteen throughout the eisteddfod. Items available from the canteen include:
Cold drinks – water, soft drinks, WILD juice, Tea & Coffee & selection of homemade cakes and slices. Sandwiches, Bacon and Egg rolls, Pies and Sausage Rolls, Chips, Lollies and Fruit.
Video and photography
There can be NO personal videoing or photography in the hall at any time. This includes photos and video using mobile phones or other personal devices. Unauthorised videoing or photography will see the competitor disqualified NO Questions. An independent video person will be available to video performances at a modest charge. Professional photographers will also be available.
Security & Safety
All staff, volunteers and contractors of Illawarra Region Eisteddfod have current Working with Children
Checks. All competitors and guests enter at their own risk. In the event of an emergency please follow the
direction of Eisteddfod staff or campus security/ staff.
Prizes
Places are decided and awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator. 1st place = trophy, 2nd & 3rd place =
medal, HC = ribbons. Cash prizes may be awarded for senior open solo sections. Troupes and groups
will receive 1 trophy for 1st as well as a 1st place ribbon for each competitor, for all other places ribbons for
each competitor. Championships 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will receive large trophies and/or cash prizes.
Scholarship winners will be awarded cash prize 1st place only.
Perpetual Trophies
Major awards will be presented on the final day of competition. Perpetual trophy holders need to return the
perpetual trophy to Better Business Accounting, 368 Princes Highway Woonona 2517 (next to McDonalds
Woonona) before February 1st 2018.

Time Limits
Time limits will be strictly adhered to. Any competitors whose music exceeds the time limit
may be disqualified and their music will begin to fade. They will receive a report only. In all
sections tags will be included in the time limit. Time limits are published in the rules for each
different category in this syllabus.
Dance Time Limits Solos = 3 minutes
Troupes = 5 Minutes
Singing Time Limits 12 Years and under 3 minutes 14 years and over 4 minutes

Dance Program
In addition to the general eisteddfod rules the following rules specific to Dance:
• Time limit is 3 minutes
• Pointe shoes must NOT be worn in age groups 11/u
• Acrobatics – Baranis and other hands free acrobatics are permitted. All competitors must indemnify Illawarra Region Eisteddfod of all risk involved in competing in this event.
• No competitor will be allowed to dance more than once in any solo section.
• Competitors 12 years and over can repeat their dance after “forgetting it” at the discretion of the adjudicator for a report only. Repeats will be allowable for younger age groups at the discretion of the adjudicator.
• Competitors will not be transferred from one section to another if incorrectly entered on entry form, unless the error is the fault of the committee.
• No one except the performer is allowed backstage except for competitors 9 years and under.
• Competitors are not permitted to dance in both restricted and open sections in the same category e.g. restricted and open jazz.
• Prompting (except babies) NOT PERMITTED AT ALL. Competitors will be disqualified.
• Props should be kept to a minimum and may be placed on stage by the backstage helper or a parent and shall be removed at the conclusion of the session. No hay bails or flammable material permitted.
• Rosin may be used on the stage in the main hall to prevent slip, if you are allergic to these substances you will dance at your own risk.
Music
• CD’s (backing music) must state competitors’ name and Amcos number. Only one song per CD is permitted.
• There must be no background tapping on any tap CD’s.
• There can be no backing vocals of any sort on backing music for the song and dance pieces.
• Music and registration of competitors needs to be done at the beginning of the session.
• Competitors should submit music for the entire session at the beginning of the session.
• No person other than official eisteddfod staff should approach the music booth. Please refer all questions to the registration desk.
Dress
• Competitors are only permitted to get changed in the dressing rooms. NO CHANGING IN AUDITORIUM AT ANY TIME.
• Improvisations - all sections except Hip Hop. Boys – plain tight fitting dance attire Girls - Plain leotard or unitard only no sequins or hologram materials, school logos etc. Hip Hop Improvisations – competitors may wear plain coloured loose fitting attire such as hip hop pants and crop top or singlet. No advertising or offensive material to be written on the clothing. Hair – should be in a bun for all improvisations, minimal accessories only i.e. small flower or ribbon.
• No competitor is permitted to wear tap shoes in the auditorium without tap covers.
Open and Restricted Dancing Sections
• Open is for any competitor.
• Restricted sections are open to competitors who have never won 1st place in restricted in that particular section at any eisteddfod, dance festival or competition.
• Restricted sections cannot qualify competitors for championships or scholarships.

Adjudicator – Lisa Maloney
Troupes Sunday 2nd April 2017
Lisa has been a dancer and teacher for a number of years, based in the south of Sydney.
Lisa is trained in classical ballet, jazz, hip-hop and contemporary dance but her passion is
with tap dancing. Lisa is both a qualified dance adjudicator and dance teacher (BDA and
FATD). Lisa’s career as a dancer has seen her perform on “Pot of Gold” and “Mornings with
Kerri-Anne” as well as at a number of performances throughout Sydney.
As a teacher, Lisa has put numerous students through exams in all facets with outstanding results and has created routines that have placed at multiple competitions, both locally and inter-state. In 2008, Lisa was involved in choreographing numbers for a charity gala in Malaysia that raised over $150,000 for the selected charities.
Lisa is also interim President of, Australian Dance Adjudicators and is active in representing the interests of dance adjudicators in Australia. As the first dance body registered in Australia, ADA has the interests of all participating in the eisteddfod forum, foremost.
As a dancer, teacher, “dance mum” and an adjudicator, Lisa is very aware of all that goes into a performance and
looks forward to sharing her knowledge with all performers so that they can continue to develop in their dancing
journey.
Adjudicator – Kelii Grauer
Dance Solos – 8th, 9th & 10th April
Kelii studied full-time performing arts with Brent Street in 1996 and began her career at 17; touring as a commercial dancer, singer and actor. Her dancing credits include principal roles in musical theatre productions Bye Bye Birdie, the musical Get Happy, and Australian & international productions of Saturday Night Fever.
Her personal career highlights include working with Baz Luhrmann in the role of Pearly Queen in the movie Moulin Rouge as well as the official opening of Fox Studios, and appearing in the chorus of Dein Perry’s Bootmen movie.
She has also performed with international artists including Kylie Minogue, Human Nature, Vanessa Amorosi, KD Lang, GreenDay, Christine Anu, John Paul Young, Marcia and Deni Hines. Kelii has also performed in awards programs such as The Logies, The Arias and People’s Choice Awards. An actor as well as a dancer; Kelii’s television appearances include guest roles on Murder Call, Breakers and All Saints.
Kelii now works as a freelance Casting Director and choreographer. Working in Australia for a TV commercial agency. Kelii has written dance, modeling and acting syllabus for talent schools and conducts workshops throughout the year in a range of dance styles, performance technique and acting for camera. She has been an adjudicator for over 12 years and having come from the eisteddfod world loves supporting young talent.
Adjudicator – Chris Favaloro
Dance Solos – 11th & 12th April
Christopher studied at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts and later at Ev &
Bow Full-time Dance Training Centre in Sydney. During his studies he was accepted into
the Cirque Du Soleil database and awarded his RAD Solo Seal.
Christopher then danced as a Soloist with Melbourne Ballet Company in 2008 and 2009.
The following year he toured Australia in Jerome Robbins' West Side Story. Christopher
then joined Mod Dance Company as a principal artist, performing signature works by
Graeme Murphy. The last two years has seen him touring internationally and
nationally with Cats - The Musical in the iconic principal role, Mr Mistoffelees. Throughout
his career, Christopher has performed in over 10 productions with Opera Australia, most
recently in their Winter Season showing at the Sydney Opera House.

Singing Program
In addition to the general eisteddfod rules the following rules specific to Singing apply:
• Time limits to be strictly adhered to. Time limits are:3 minutes – 12 Years and Under - 4 minutes – 14 and Over - 5 minutes – Groups
• Sheet music is required to be submitted for Classical, Folk and Musical Theatre sections. If sheetmusic is not handed in a report will only be awarded. Please follow the appropriate copyrightlegislation. For more information on copyright rules go to the eisteddfod website or www.apra-amcos.com.au Sheet music will be returned at the end of the section.
• Original sheet music can be collected by the competitor at the end of the section. All photocopiedsheet music must be destroyed by the committee as per apra/amcos rules.
• Microphone is compulsory for Up Tempo, Ballad and is optional for Musical Theatre. All othersections Microphone Optional is to be used, this includes championships.
• A piano is available for accompaniment however an official accompanist is not provided. It is theresponsibility of the competitor to contact and engage an Accompanist prior to the Eisteddfod.
• Singing competitors can accompany themselves on an instrument.
• CD’s (backing music) must state competitors’ name and amcos number. Only one song per CD ispermitted.
• There is to be no background vocals on CD’s for singing sections.
• Music and registration of competitors needs to be done at the beginning of the session
• Competitors should submit music for the entire session at the beginning of the session
• No person other than official eisteddfod staff should approach the music booth. Please refer allquestions to the registration desk.
Open and Restricted Singing Sections
• Open is open to any competitor.
• Restricted sections are for competitors who have never placed 1st for the style being entered at anyeisteddfod or competition. Restricted sections do not qualify competitors for championships orscholarships.
Adjudicator – Nadine Manion Nadine Manion (BCA) lectures in contemporary voice at JMC Academy, Sydney.
Her professional musical career spans over 12 years and has seen her performing in numerous genres including Music Theatre, Rock, Pop, Jazz and Motown. Nadine completed her Bachelor of Performance at the University of Wollongong before going on to found the Illawarra’s first contemporary musical theatre group Off-Broadway Productions. Previously, Nadine both founded and taught at Elite Vocal Academy, a large contemporary music studio in NSW. She continues to work with and mentor contemporary vocalists while maintaining a successful performing career with high profile groups such as the Motor City Syndicate.
Nadine is currently undertaking her Masters of Research (Voice) at Macquarie University.
She is a highly experienced vocal adjudicator and is delighted to return to the Illawarra.

providing trophies and awards for competitors.
In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more
than that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire,
determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and
respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?
