Ikigai Ikigai Misunderstood The Venn diagram below is what you will find on the internet when you google ‘ikigai’ . This is NOT Ikigai. This is not what ikigai means to the Japanese. They do not use this framework. This framework is just one blogger’s interpretation (misinterpretation) of ikigai. In fact, in his own words:  “In 2014, I wrote a blog post on the subject of Ikigai. In that blog post, I merged two concepts to create something new. Essentially, I merged a venn diagram on ‘purpose’ with Dan Buettner’s Ikigai concept, in relation to living to be more than 100. The sum total of my effort was that I changed one word on a diagram and shared a ‘new’ meme with the world. “ - Marc Winn, Meme Seeding, http://theviewinside.me/meme-seeding/

The Purpose Venn Diagram The Purpose Venn diagram is a useful framework for evaluating your career. It is a simplistic overview to understand what your current work situation is. It is used by career advisors to help people create a more balanced work situation.

Ikigai Is Not About…. Ikigai is not about making money. Ikigai is not the pursuit of professional success or financial freedom. Most Japanese would not associate making money with ikigai. Success and the accumulation of wealth could be a by-product of your ikigai, but it should not be the focus.  Ikigai is not what the world needs from you. Ikigai is not about what the world needs from you. Ikigai lies in the realm of community, family, friendships and in the roles you fulfill.  Ikigai is not about what your good at. You don’t have to be good at something to find your ikigai. Ikigai can be a daily ritual you enjoy, or the practice of a new hobby. Ikigai is more about growth rather than mastery.  Ikigai is often not about what you love. Ikigai is more about finding purpose and living your values, rather than doing the things you love.

The Japanese Ikigai Venn Diagram A more accurate representation of ikigai using the Venn diagram is presented below.

In this representation, your daily life is at the center and the circles represent areas of your life where you can find ikigai. It’s important to understand that you are able to find ikigai in various areas of your life - from small everyday rituals to the pursuit of meaningful goals.  This illustrates that Ikigai is not a sweet spot of doing something that you love, that you are good at, that the word needs and that you can be paid for, but a rich spectrum where you can find ikigai in the realm of small things, in the practice of a hobby, in your roles and relationships, and by simply living your values.   We can see that Ikigai is something easily achievable, not a single formidable life goal that might take us years to achieve as represented by the Westernised version.
