WELCOME TO AUGUST AT IKEA

This month we’re happy to introduce a range of products that create an inviting atmosphere in the home. The launch embraces the midnight tropics trend; full of deep colours, golden accents and a touch of the tropics.For the living room, there’s a modern designed armchair in a range of fresh colours and a practical sofa bed that makes room for spontaneous sleepovers. There are also plenty of new textiles to help keep the space cosy with rugs to throws. A selection of new lighting and decoration objects help to set the right mood.

When it comes to dining, we’re launching a chair that combines iconic design with sustainable innovation. To continue the theme, there’s a new dinnerware series that’s partialy made of glass sourced from IKEA factory scraps. On the kitchen front, a new worktop creates a genuine look of ash while saving on wood, and leather handles made of leather fragments give a new twist to storage. For the bathroom, new taps in a range of styles help to save on water and energy.

All in all, this launch highlights how smart and beautiful products can be made with respect for the environment. Enjoy!

KRÖNGE RUG

The seasonal colours of the KRÖNGE rug are sure to brighten up any floor. Handwoven in wool, the rug is a joy to walk on and look at. It’s also a rug to feel positive about as it’s made in an IKEA initiative in India and Bangladesh to ensure good working conditions and fair wages for the weavers. This initiative started in 2010 to tackle the problems in the carpet weaving industry, with work being done at home or in unregulated centres. Together with our suppliers we have established regulated weaving centres and also invested in a new type of loom that al-lows for a more ergonomic working position and requires less muscle power to operate, making it easier for more women to weave rugs.

SLÄKT SERIES

The bed is the central piece in the room for pre-teen kids - and with the help of global research into what 8-12 year olds around the world want - we developed SLÄKT series. With friends becoming increasingly important at this age, we’ve created a bed with the choice of vari-ous underbed modules that are designed for relaxing and hanging out. The range was developed to be as easy as possible for kids to interact with, says Nina Hughes from Children’s IKEA:

“Kids can change what they want to do in their room in a heartbeat, so we designed SLÄKT to be super modular and adaptable, as well as easy to move around if say a bunch of friends come over.”

The pieces are made to be multi-functional, and besides an underbed with storage there’s a storage box on wheels that can act as a side table and a seat module with handy storage inside. Add a dash of colour when using storage in a clever and multifunctional way. VISTHUS chest of drawers and ward-robe offer differently sized drawers, so it’s easy to find the best home for clothes and accessories. The products came about during a time when there was spare capacity in a factory in Poland. Through express development, old ideas for products were reviewed to see what treasures could be found. ODGER CHAIR

Not only a design icon, ODGER chair is a real innovation when it comes to materials. Made with a mix of wood and plastic where more than 50% of the plastic is recycled, the chair is a more environmentally sustainable choice than virgin oil-based products. The visible wood grain is smooth to the touch, while giving the chair a warm and authentic feeling.

When being developed, there was a lot of focus on cre-ating a design that exudes comfort. With its curved look and bowl-shaped seat, ODGER chair is meant for long dinners and work meetings, says product developer Karin Engqvist:

“We performed initial studies about seating comfort and tested prototypes with different groups to find a design that would be really comfortable for as many people as possible. The bar was set high and we respected it by not rushing.”

The new black BACKIG dinnerware features a beautiful design made of reused material. IKEA takes waste se-riously, and the new dinnerware has been made partly of glass from IKEA factory scraps that has been melted down and had liquid pigment added.

With a squared shape and soft rounded lines, the design-ers Pia Amsell and Barbro Berlin tell of their inspiration for the series:

“When we designed the dinnerware we wanted to cre-ate an organic shape that reflects the light in a way that gives the dishes a deep black colour. Both the colour and the shape means the food stands out strikingly against the dark glossy surface – and we hope that BACKIG will inspire many creative and personalised table settings.”

The squared shape makes a nice change to traditional round, as well as knowing you’re eating from a plate that’s contributing to a better world!
