Sir Ashutosh Mookherjee was a great Mathematician, a Physicist, an efficient Lawyer, a good Judge,
and the great Academic Administrator and leader of Bengal Renaissance movement

1. 1864, June 29 Born at Bhawanipur, in Calcutta, (in British India) Mother : Jagattarini Devi; Father : Ganga Prasad Mukherjee
2. 1869 Admitted in Sishu Vidyalaya at Chakraberia, Bhowanipore, Cacutta, Later he was shifted to South Suburban School
3. 1879 Appeared in Matriculation Examination from South Suburban School of Calcutta University, and Passed; stood second and received a first grade scholarship
4. 1880 Admission at the Presidency College in Kolkata where he met Prafulla Chandra Roy and Narendranath Dutta (who later become Swami Vivekananda).
5. 1881 FA (First Arts) Examination from the Presidency College securing the 3rd
place;
6. 1884 BA Examination in 1884 standing first in the University winning the
Harishchandra Prize and obtained Ishan and Vizianagram scholarships;
7. 1884, 1885,

Studied Law, and took his B.L. degree from the City College, Calcutta, and
won the 'Tagore Law Gold Medal' for three successive years: 1884, 1885
and 1886.
8. 1885 MA Examination 1885 in Mathematics securing first position
9. 1886 MA Examination in 1886 in Physical Science; and
10. 1886 Qualified in the special competitive examination for the award of
Premchand Roychand Fellowship
11. 1886 Marriage with Jogomaya Devi
12. 1888 Practicing as a Vakil (Advocate) at the Calcutta High Court
13. 1894 Recipient of the 'Doctor of Law'.
14. 1897 Appointed the Tagore Law Professor in the Calcutta University. He
had then published a book, The Law of Perpetuities in British India
15. 1904 Appointed a Judge in the Calcutta High Court
16. 1904 - 1914 Appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University, and continued to
hold the post for eight years (1906-1914).
17. 1908 - 1924 Founded the Calcutta Mathematical Society in 1908, and continued to be
its President from the beginning until his death 25th
May 1924.
18. 1921 - 1923 Again appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University (Government
appointed him again)
19. 1924, May 25 Died at Patna, in British India

This year (2015) is the 150th Birth Anniversary of Sir Ashutosh Mookherjee; the eminent Educationist & Educational Administrator, great Mathematician & Physicist, bright lawyer and an eminent Judge. He made great contributions in dissemination and reforms in education and educational administration in India. He had fought with the then British Ruler for maintaining autonomy of the University; and never compromised with the Government at the cost of interest of the University. He made immense contributions to Mathematics and Physical Science too. In fact, he is one of the pioneering personalities to promote research in Indian universities.
