PRESS RELEASE

QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-

BASED INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER, 2013

(BASE 2004-05=100)

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2004-

05 for the month of December 2013 have been released by the Central

Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme

Implementation. IIP is compiled using data received from 16 source agencies

viz. Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP); Indian Bureau of

Mines; Central Electricity Authority; Joint Plant Committee; Ministry of

Petroleum & Natural Gas; Office of Textile Commissioner; Department of

Chemicals & Petrochemicals; Directorate of Sugar; Department of

Fertilizers; Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils & Fats; Tea Board;

Office of Jute Commissioner; Office of Coal Controller; Railway Board; Office

of Salt Commissioner and Coffee Board.

2. The General Index for the month of December 2013 stands at 178.3, whichis 0.6% lower as compared to the level in the month of December 2012. The

cumulative growth for the period April-December 2013-14 over the

corresponding period of the previous year stands at (-) 0.1%.

3. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and

Electricity sectors for the month of December 2013 stand at 133.0, 188.0

and 169.4 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 0.4%,

(-) 1.6% and 7.5% as compared to December 2012 (Statement I). The

cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-December 2013-14 overthe corresponding period of 2012-13 has been (-) 1.8%, (-) 0.6% and 5.6%

respectively.

4. In terms of industries, eight (8) out of the twenty two (22) industry groups

(as per 2-digit NIC-2004) in the manufacturing sector have shown negative

growth during the month of December 2013 as compared to the

corresponding month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group

Radio, TV and communication equipment & apparatus has shown the

highest negative growth of (-) 35.7%, followed by (-) 26.1% in Furniture;manufacturing n.e.c. and (-) 22.1% in Office, accounting & computing

dressing and dyeing of fur has shown a positive growth of 19.7% followed

by 13.5% in Chemicals and chemical products and 12.9% in Electrical

machinery & apparatus n.e.c..

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in December 2013 over

December 2012 are 2.4% in Basic goods, (-) 3.0% in Capital goods and 4.5%in Intermediate goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and

Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 16.2% and 1.6%

respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being (-) 5.3%.

6. Some of the important items showing high negative growth during the

current month over the same month in previous year include Polythene

Bags incl. Hdpe & Ldpe Bags [(-) 58.4%], Aluminium Conductor[(-) 55.9%],

Telephone Instruments (incl. Mobile Phones & Accessories) [(-) 39.0%],

Boilers [(-) 38.9%], Earth Moving Machinery [(-) 38.2%], Gems andJewellery [(-) 33.3%], Polyester Chips [(-) 31.9%], Molasses [(-) 30.3%],

Pens of All Kinds [(-) 29.2%], Computers [(-) 25.9%], Wood Furniture

[(-) 25.7%]and Commercial Vehicles[(-) 25.3%].

7. Some of the other important items showing high positive growth are:

Vitamins (198.4%), Sugar Machinery (78.8%), Ayurvedic Medicaments

(62.7%), Cable, Rubber Insulated (59.8%), Air Conditioners (Room)

(47.2%), Steel Structures (38.5%), Leather Garments (27.4%),

Transformers (Small) (26.7%),

Stainle

ss/ alloy stee

l (25.0%), Cashew

Kernels(23.4%)and Antibiotics & its preparations(20.1%).

8. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for the month of December 2013, the

indices for November 2013 have undergone the first revision and those for

September 2013 have undergone the final revision in the light of the

updated data received from the source agencies. It maybe noted that these

revised indices (first revision) in respect of November 2013 shall undergo

final (second)revision along with the release of IIP for the month of February

2014.

9. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at

Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC-2004) andby

Use-based classification for the month of December 2013, along with the

growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the

cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed .

Electricity sectors for the month of November 2013 stand at 122.9, 170.3

and 158.5 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 1.0%, (-

) 3.5% and 6.3% as compared to November 2012 (Statement I). The

cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-November 2013-14 over

the corresponding period of 2012-13 has been (-) 2.2%, (-) 0.6% and 5.4%respectively.

4. In terms of industries, ten (10) out of the twenty two (22) industry groups


growth during the month of November 2013 as compared to the

corresponding month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group

Radio, TV and communication equipment & apparatus has shown the

highest negative growth of (-) 42.2%, followed by (-) 27.5% in Office,

accounting & computing machinery and (-) 19.5% in Furniture;

manufacturing n.e.c.. On the other hand, the industry group Chemicals

and chemical products has shown a positive growth of 18.6% followed by

16.1% in Electricalmachinery & apparatus n.e.c. and 14.5% in Wearing

apparel; dressing and dyeing of fur.

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in November 2013 over

November 2012 are 0.7% in Basic goods, 0.3% in Capital goods and 3.3% in

Intermediate goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and Consumernon-durables have recorded growth of (-) 21.5% and 2.5% respectively, with

BASED INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, 2013

(BASE 2004-05=100)


05 for the month of October 2013 have been released by the Central

Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme

Implementation. IIP is compiled using data received from 16 source agencies

viz. Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP); Indian Bureau of

Mines; Central Electricity Authority; Joint Plant Committee; Ministry of

Petroleum & Natural Gas; Office of Textile Commissioner; Department of

Chemicals & Petrochemicals; Directorate of Sugar; Department of

Fertilizers; Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils & Fats; Tea Board;

Office of Jute Commissioner; Office of Coal Controller; Railway Board; Office

of Salt Commissioner and Coffee Board.

2. The General Index for the month of October 2013 stands at 168.5, which is

1.8% lower as compared to the level in the month of October 2012. The

cumulative growth for the period April-October 2013-14 over the

corresponding period of the previous year stands at 0.0%.


Electricity sectors for the month of October 2013 stand at 118.1, 178.8 and

162.6 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of (-) 3.5%, (-) 2.0%

and 1.3% as compared to October 2012 (Statement I). The cumulativegrowth in the three sectors during April-October 2013-14 over the

corresponding period of 2012-13 has been (-) 2.7%, (-) 0.3% and 5.3%

respectively.

4. In terms of industries, ten (10) out of the twenty two (22) industry groups


growth during the month of October 2013 as compared to the corresponding

month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group Furniture;

manufacturing n.e.c. has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 28.9%,

followed by (-) 27.2% in Office, accounting & computing machinery and

( ) 23 0% in Radio TV and communication equipment & apparat s On the

shown a positive growth of 34.2% followed by 14.7% in Other transport

equipment and 9.3% in Medical, precision & optical instruments, watchesand clocks.

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in October 2013 over

October 2012 are (-) 1.6% in Basic goods, 2.3% in Capital goods and 1.8%in Intermediate goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and

Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 12.0% and 1.8%

respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being(-) 5.1%.
