I am directed to refer to your letter No. B1 I 10906 I 88 dated 9-10-1988 without its enclosures regarding recognition of qualification for the purpose of employment under the Central Government and to say that the degrees 1 diplomas awarded by the Universities established by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature, Institution deemed to be Universities, under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 and Institution of National Importance declared under an Act of Parliament stand automatically recognised for purpose of employment under the Central Government. No formal orders recognising such degrees/ diplomas are necessary to be issued.

About Annamalai University

The Annamalai University, one of the largest unitary, teaching and residential Universities in Southern Asia, was established and incorporated in the year 1929 as per the Annamalai University Act, 1928 (Tamil Nadu Act 1 of 1929). Now, the Annamalai University Act, 1928 has been repealed and replaced by the Annamalai University Act, 2013 (Tamil Nadu Act 20 of 2013). His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu is the Chancellor of the University.

This University has, since its inception, aimed at imparting education in all fields of knowledge to thousands of students from across the country and abroad, located in a rural setting in coastal district of Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, the University has played a pivotal role in providing access to higher education to thousands of youth from economically and socially disadvantaged classes. In this respect, this University's service to the nation is tremendous.

In the past 87 years the University has grown into a premier institution of higher learning and research. The University today is spread over an extensive campus of more than 800 acres and has the Faculties of Arts, Science, Indian Languages, Engineering and Technology, Education, Fine Arts, Agriculture, Medicine, Dentistry and Marine Sciences and in all, they comprise 49 Departments of Study.

Annamalainagar is a busy and self-contained University township, east of Chidambaram town, the abode of Lord Nataraja, the Cosmic Dancer. The sprawling and scenic campus enclosing the Departments of Study, Students' Hostels, Staff Quarters, Playground, etc., is situated at a holy place (Tiruvetkalam, currently knowns as Annamalainagar), 2 kms from the Lord Nataraja Temple.

The Rajah Muthiah Institute of Health Science, comprising the Rajah Muthiah Medical College, the Rajah Muthiah Dental College and the Rani Meyyammai institute of nursing offers various UG and PG Programmes, besides serving the rural population through its modern 1260-bed hospital.

The Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Aiyar Library, the third biggest in Tamil Nadu, has a collection of more than 5 lakh volumes besides journals, reports and rare palm-leaf manuscripts. It has all the modern facilities such as Internet, Microfilming, etc.

The University, being unitary and residential in character has above 30,000 students pursuing various on-campus programmes of study and more than 10,000 of them are accommodated in its 19 hostels, acclaimed to be the biggest in the country.

The University plays a vital role in disseminating knowledge acquired through research to the surrounding rural areas in which it is placed and it serves the larger community through its Centre for Adult Education and Extension, Centre for Rural Development and Uplift of Weaker Sections, the Department of Community Medicine, Dental College, the NSS; and above all, through its Directorate of Distance Education, it takes education to the doorsteps of thousands of adult learners all over the country and abroad.

These enormous quantities of data hold the keys to success across many domains from business and marketing to treating cancer or mitigating climate change.

The pace at which we produce data is rapidly outstripping our ability to analyse and use it. Science and industry are crying out for a new generation of data scientists who combine the statistical skills of data analysis and the computational skills needed to Carry out this analysis on a vast scale.

The Data Science Masters degree will provide the students with an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of Data Science and its application in different organisational contexts. The students will also gain practical skills in handling structured and unstructured data, analysing and visualising data, data mining, as well as gaining hands-on experience of software tools used and their use in real-world settings. Students will gain the skills of a "data manager" who understands what the algorithms (e.g., for data mining or handling 'Big Data') can do and when to use them for the benefit of the organization.

Aims and outcomes:

The Masters programme in Data-Science starts with the introduction of key concepts and principles of Data Science to help you put into context what is being taught in the program. Right from the start, students will be engaging with Data Science as an emerging researched to develop their own understanding of the subject. The students will gain knowledge on various approaches used to analyze data and organize and manage unstructured data, one of the fastest growing sources of data.

Throughout the programme, students will continue to learn fundamental data analysis principles, and in particular be taught methods from data mining and visualization and how these are used in supporting decision-making. The participants will also be taught methods for modelling and organizing structured data within the context of database design. At the same time, students will learn more about developing a proposal, literature reviews, research methods, as well as qualitative approaches to data analysis that will complement the quantitative methods taught during the programme curriculum.
