PARKing DAY EVENT

The IIDA San Antonio City Center participated in Parking Days for the third time on September the 21st, an event hosted by the Design Foundation of San Antonio. Parking Day is a global event that takes place in cities all over the world. Its purpose is to encourage artists and local organizations to create a city park within the boundaries of a parking space in order to promote the addition of green space in urban environments. The IIDA Student Chapter also participated in the event and presented a very creatively designed parking space made entirely from recycled materials. Our theme this year was “Flock with IIDA” and we filled our parking space with green grass (green carpet tiles donated by Shaw) and pink flamingos of every variety. We received a lot of positive feedback from the general public who was there to view the exhibit. As a whole, we feel like this was a great (free) way to promote our organization and interact with other design organizations in our community.

IIDA San Antonio’s Membership Drive was on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Bahia Azul at The Alley on Bitters. We had a silent auction with great donations by Maharam, SitOnIt, KenMark, TriKes, Atlas Carpet and, 1 IIDA Membership. Our underwriters for the event were Spectrum Lighting, Dirtt, Steelcase, Mohawk, Concept Surfaces, Knoll and Office Source. The first 10 people to sign up for a membership also received a grab bag. We had a great turnout of 77 attendees! For questions about IIDA membership please visit: http://iida-tx-ok.org/membership/member-benefits

WINTER FESTIVAL

The second annual Winter Festival was a huge hit at Bigz Burger Joint on November 30th with many families, friends, and IIDA members in attendance. With the help of our generous underwriters, IIDA San Antonio City Center was able to provide a delicious burger bar as well as libations for guests. The Festival also featured several arts and crafts booths, photos with Santa, a silent auction, shopping booths for Christmas presents, and a Christmas tree decorating contest. Guests in attendance this year more than tripled the first annual Winter Festival. IIDA San Antonio City Center looks forward to making this event an integral part of their identity within the San Antonio design community. Special Thanks to our event underwriters: Crossville Tile, Daltile, Earthwerks, Intertech, Lonestar Lighting, Marazzi Tile, MDC Wallcovering, Philadelphia Flooring, Professional Furniture Consultants, Reader’s Wholesale, San Antonio Floor Finishers, Shaw Carpet, Tandus Flooring, and Workplace Resource.

IIDA San Antonio was proud to donate part of the proceeds of Winter Festival to Giving Interiors, a nonprofit organization founded in 2011 that supplies home furnishings and interior improvements to people in need in the San Antonio area. One of the founding principles of Giving Interiors is that everyone deserves a nice place to come home to including a chair to sit on, dishes and utensils to eat with, towels and sheet to use, and a warm bed to sleep in. Winter Festival attendees were encouraged to bring an item that could be donated to Giving Interiors. For more information on Giving Interiors and how to help, please visit their website at www.givinginteriors.org

SAN ANTONIO CITY CENTER

The San Antonio City Center hosted the annual Chapter Forum Speaker Tour on November 13th at Global Industries. The annual Forum Speaker Tour connects speakers from the IIDA International Association to each of the Texas Oklahoma Chapter’s seven City Centers. This year’s speaker, Dennis Krause, Hon. IIDA, is the Senior Vice President of IIDA and has worked for the Association for sixteen years. In his role, he leads initiatives for IIDA Membership and Industry Relations, oversees the Association’s many Interior Design Competitions, produces the annual COOL gala, and manages the IIDA Foundation. Dennis pursues collaborative opportunities which are developed into quality programs for the Membership, as well as promoting interaction and networking among our Interior Designers, Corporate Members, and Students. Mr. Krause’s presentation, “Philanthropy – Designing a Plan for Giving Back”, focused on the IIDA Foundation and how Members can participate in this part of the Association when considering their charitable donations. As a not-for-profit (501c3), the IIDA Foundation provides numerous scholarship programs for Interior Design students and emerging designers. Its primary mission is to advance Interior Design through education, research, and knowledge to benefit IIDA and the Interior Design profession.

Annually, the IIDA Foundation holds the Designing for the Future Campaign in October and November to raise funds for the Foundation’s programs. The purpose of this year’s Campaign is to provide funding for WHAT CLIENTS WANT, Volume II, the second in IIDA’s series of limited edition books that explores the relationship between clients and designers with insightful and informative conversations about the collaborative design process. IIDA Members will be able to reserve their free copy of Volume II in late 2013. For more information visit: http://www.iida.org/content.cfm/foundation.

NCIDQ STUDY GROUP

The IIDA NCIDQ study group is an excellent way to prepare for the NCIDQ exam. Participants are able to take mock exams and receive great tips from others who have already taken and passed all 3 sections of the exam. Classes begin on January 14th and meet every week for ten weeks with dinner provided. Thank you to Broussard Group for hosting the study group at their office. If you have not already signed up for the class, it is still not too late!

TEXAS ASSOCIATION FOR INTERIOR DESIGNERS We encourage our local IIDA members to also become members of the Texas Association for Interior Designers, an advocacy group that represents interior designers in legislative issues in Texas. TAID has helped lead the fight against the Sunset Commission’s recommendation to deregulate the interior design profession in Texas. TAID also raises money from selling the new TAS books, a valuable asset to any design firm.

IIDA San Antonio City Center is very excited to announce our FIRST annual Fiesta Pin Design competition!   Check out https://iida.ejoinme.org/saccfiestapin  for more information.
