+++++++ +++ + + ++Less Danger When Phones are
UsedTelephones for train dispatching on
the Knoxville division of the Louisville Nashville railroad have nowbeen in service for more than twomonths and officials say that areeven more successful than hoped forsays the Knoxville Journal and Tribune v
This is the first railroad that hasever displaced the old telegraph systern with telephones in Tennessee andprobably in the Southeast but alreadyother roads whose officials have seenthis divisions lines in service are contemplating inaugurating the system 1
The advantage of using telephonesin train dispatching are numerousThere is said to be much less dangerof orders being misunderstoodspoken than when sent by code It isalso possible for a man to become adispatcher without having to study foryears on the telegraph code and thisin itself is becoming a great item forrailroad officials to worry about for itis said to be almost impossible for therailways to find as many competentdispatchers as are needed Anotheradvantage is that at small side
where no night dispatchers arekept a train crew can forward or
messages should there be something wrong with their train and thedanger of wrecks can in this way belessened
During the past six months a greatmany improvements other than thetelephone dispatching system havebeen made on the Knoxville divisionof the Louisville and Nashville railway and it is now one of the mostmodern divisions of railroad in thesouth All switch and signal lightshave been changed and colors are nowbeing used for signals which are lessliable to be mistaken by train crewsA number of new engines have alsobeen placed in service en the divisionhile numerous other minor improvements have been made
