New Features in the Q3 2014 Release Overview
• Welcome to the Q3 2014 Release of IHS Knowledge Collections, generally
available on Monday, 28 July. This release includes important product
enhancements requested by our valued customers. These new features were all
developed based on customer input and include:
►Search and Filter by Metadata such as Title,
Author, ISBN, or Publication Date
Narrow search results to more quickly find
desired content, for example, limit results for
patents and journals by most recent
publication(s)
► Filter by Knowledge Collections
Instantly limit your searching to just the applied
engineering content within your subscription or
quickly identify content in collections outside
your current subscription
► Find Answers Quickly in eBooks & Standards
Link directly from search results to a reference on
any page within an ebook or standard hosted on
IHS Standards Expert, with the appropriate
passage highlighted, so you immediately get the
information you need – this functionality will be
available in mid-August
► Patent Intelligence Module Upgrade
This unique, powerful graphical toolset allows
users to analyze technology trends and patent
information to achieve your strategic and
competitive goals – available as an exclusive
upgrade option for IHS Knowledge Collections
customers

Search and Filter by Metadata such as Title, Author,
ISBN, or Publication Date
IHS KNOWLEDGE COLLECTIONS – Q3 RELEASE QUICK START GUIDE – JULY 2014
• This new Advanced Search capability allows users to narrow their
search results based on specific metadata criteria in order to more
quickly identify relevant documents. For example:
• While searching in patents, a user could use the publication date filter to limit
results to just documents issued this year; or,
• While searching in journal articles, a user could limit the results to just articles
by a certain author
4
What this means for you:
• You will be able to easily narrow your searches and more quickly identify the
precise content that meets your specified criteria. This will save you time and help
you find answers faster.

Filter by Knowledge Collection
IHS KNOWLEDGE COLLECTIONS – Q3 RELEASE QUICK START GUIDE – JULY 2014
• This new filtering capability will allow you to limit your searches to just
the applied engineering ebooks within the knowledge collections that are
included with your subscription. Alternatively, you will be able to explore
the content in other knowledge collections, to identify useful content that
currently lies outside your subscription.
11
What this means for you:
• You will be able to easily narrow your searches to content to which you have full-
text access within the ebooks in the Knowledge Collections.
• You also can find new sources of knowledge that you might otherwise not have
discovered, opening up potential new solutions to your technical challenges.

Patent Intelligence Module Upgrade Available as an upgrade option in conjunction with IHS Knowledge Collections
IHS KNOWLEDGE COLLECTIONS – Q3 RELEASE QUICK START GUIDE – JULY 2014
• This unique, powerful graphical toolset allows users to analyze
technology trends and patent information. The patent analysis toolset
helps technical researchers, engineers, and innovators understand the
competitive landscape; discover new markets; spot influential trends,
companies, and people; and stay on top of technology trends,
• Research technologies or companies, or analyze patent references
• Find key people for a topic or industry
• Available on an enterprise-wide/concurrent user basis
19
What this means for you:
• This optional module can help you understand where competitors are focusing their
investment, where current patents might block your entry into a market, or which
markets might represent better opportunities due to lack of patent activity.
• Make better decisions to drive innovation investments that result in greater returns
while mitigating risks associated with patent infringement.

You can review patents identified through your search, and even save or export results for further analysis or to pass on
to colleagues. The “view summary” functionality will allow you to see a synopsis of a patent in your default language,
even if you don’t speak the language of the patent itself, so you can judge the relevance of the patent for your research

A search for a specific patent, for example, by patent number or
assignee, can quickly let you access the text or a PDF of the patent, or
learn more about the inventor or the patent itself.

Finally, a reference patent analysis will reveal backward and forward patent references of a given patent document – in
this case, US patent #5405213 shows 5 backward and 17 forward patent references. This can be important information
for technology landscaping or competitive analysis - are your competitors referencing your patents in their own filings?
