HOW HE SOLD ONE MILLION ALBUMS WITH OUT BEING SIGNED TO A RECORD LABEL

Introduce yourself and tell us how your career as a grime artist started?Hey, I’m Trick, my career started from pirate radio, I only used to do it for fun but I got a lot of positive feedback and many people liked the music I was producing, so I started creating my own mixtapes and gave them out for free as a form of promo-tion, when I had a decent fan-base I started charging a small fee for my mixtapes, the money was spent on equipment, web-design, software and promotion.

EMI was looking to sign you and you rejected them, why?Every artist who gets signed forgets about where they came from, record labels don’t allow them to make their own music and force them to make certain tracks, most the grime artists that are singed have forget about grime and moved towards pop mu-sic, they make music that 12 year old girls would listen to, what happened to hard-core grime? – My soul is not for sale.

How did you manage to sell one million copies of your album without the backup of a record label?I have a lot of support as I make music about real issues and music that people can relate to, my supporters know that I need them to buy my music so I can progress in my career and put some more real music out there for them. Selling one million albums was only possible because of all the support I have, people know about me and the reasons behind my music, the public is fed of the rubbish mainstream music, when they hear real music they get addicted to it, my music is like a drug.

How do you think the grime scene is look-ing?I think the grime scene is looking good, it’s fi nally getting known worldwide especially in America the birthplace of hip-hop, all we need now is for a grime track to get on the charts, once it gets onto the charts people will start listening to it and it will spread.Last month Skepta took grime to the next level by featuring p.diddy an American rapper on grime remix track, and lowkey collaborated with worldwide artists, so did akala, sway and a few others. Every grime artist is doing their own little thing to get grime known.

Apart from grime what other genres do you do?I have made a few hip-hop / rap tracks, to be honest it depends on the mood I’m in when writing my lyrics and the beats I have. I’m looking to do collaboration’s with art-ists from any genre.

Who are your top 10 uk grime/rap artists at the moment?In no particular order; - Ghetts – Lowkey – Wretch32 – Don.Strapzy – Akala – Black The Ripper – Sway – Dot Rottern – Scorcher – Calibar

Why do you think the music industry is not allowing underground rap / grime art-ists to go mainstream?Because they THINK grime promotes vio-lence and is all about guns, drugs and sex – yet they allow tracks like “Akon – I wanna f**k” you and “Rihanna s&m” to be on the charts – to be honest grime isn’t allow about violence, most grime artists rap about things that have happened in their

lives and issues people can relate too, some grime/rap tracks are also politically moti-vated like “Lowkey – Long Live Palestine” and “Ghetts – invisible” - The music industry thinks grime artists are thugs and should not be allowed to go mainstream as they promote violence, well if you don’t let these so called “thugs” progress in their careers what do you think their second op-tion is ? Robbery, drugs, fraud etc. – I was facing this issue where I would not get any media attention so therefore I started doing everything myself, I set up my own web-site and radio, I made my own studio and created my own beats, it all paid off and I sold a million copies of my album, I have now created my own record label and I am looking to work with new upcoming artists.

Any Final Comments?Look out for the new album “Grime Is Not Dead” featuring, Big H – Wiley – JME – Skepta – Lowkey – Ghetts – Devlin – Sway – it should be out on the 19th march 2011 – it will be available in HMV & and independent record shops.
