If you’ve lived in the Riviera for many years like my family has, you probably have fond memories of the Palos Verdes Begonia Farm. Though it said Palos Verdes in its name, the Begonia Farm was actually located in Torrance and was the go-to nursery for Riviera residents for many decades. The Begonia Farm was opened in 1941 by Dr. John Reticker, the great-grandfather of Riviera resident and former Begonia Farm owner John Bauman. Dr. Reticker was a retired physician who raised begonias and fuchsias as a hobby in a greenhouse at his daughter’s home in the late 1930s. He opened the begonia farm near the

corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Anza to sell tuberous begonias to plant lovers like himself.

Back then, the Begonia Farm was a real working farm surrounded by fields and Walteria Lake. When customers found a begonia they wanted to buy, they’d place a colored flag next to it so the nurseryman could dig it up and plant it in a clay pot.

At one time, a famous fish restaurant stood where the Calvary Church is now, and the dining room patrons enjoyed a scenic look out onto the shade house of begonias. In later years, the Palos Verdes Bird Farm opened nearby featuring exotic feathered friends, while the bright pink Super Yarn Mart was a few steps away.

John’s father, Jack, was the third generation to run the Begonia Farm.

John grew up on the legendary nursery and the whole family took part on weekends planting seedlings and pollinating the begonias with small paint brushes. Even when John took over the business, Jack could be found in his plant doctor chair patiently answering questions about ideal growing conditions or how to rid plants of pests.

The Begonia Farm was known for its wide variety of plants and friendly customer service. Customers and employees knew each other by name, and it wasn’t unusual for nurserymen to drive past client’s homes to see how their new plants were thriving.

The Begonia Farm closed its doors in 1997, a victim of the Southland’s drought and water rationing in the early 1990s and the aerospace cutbacks. Home improvement chains were also impinging on the independent nursery’s business. Today, the Begonia Village, a townhome complex, sits where the Begonia Farm once stood, just behind a drive-through Walgreens.

John, his wife Martha, and their two children moved to the Riviera in 1979, and just as in past generations, the whole family worked at the Begonia Farm at one time.

“I still have good friends whom I met through the Begonia Farm,” said John. “It may no longer be just down the street from my home, but it will always be a part of my life.”

There are not enough words in our vocabulary that can describe how we feel about Igor! He handled three real estate transactions simultaneously for us; and how he jug-gled everything, still amazes us! It started out with him listing our dad’s house in Country Hills. Then low and be-hold, we find a dream home in Rancho Mirage at the same time, and of course, we needed representation on purchasing that home and selling our home in Hollywood Riviera. Never did we dream that we could pull this off, three homes in escrow at the same time! We knew we had the right realtor when 14 offers came in for our dad’s house, and all over, the asking price! Igor had a buyer for our home in Hollywood Riviera even before signing the listing; he is just so amazing! What really was remarkable was how all the closings went smooth and quickly! He had coordinated this so well. Not even a glitch!! “Real estate agent” just doesn’t seem to be the right title for Igor! He is truly a pro-fessional in the real estate field! Igor has so much more to offer his clients than just selling real estate. Maybe ‘Realtor of All Trades” best describes Igor! He has such an outstanding background both personally and professionally that is just beyond belief! In the middle of these transactions, we had a 7-day cruise to the Caribbean planned; however, we had to cancel. We had the special insurance if something should happen to us medically, etc., but buying and selling real estate did not fall into any of the cate-gories to get a refund. We decided to give our trip away. After discussing this, we de-cided on donating it to a Cystic Fibrosis recipient. Igor was like “Woody Woodpecker”! Getting the cruise ship to accept this offer was another story; but Igor made it happen! Through one of his realtors, he found a young man of 18 who was just getting ready to graduate from high school; he and his mother went on this cruise and with the help of Igor and his associate arranging for and paying for the air fare and hotel; this young man had the time of his life. As a matter of fact, it was a wonderful experience for all of us involved. Igor by far is our “life realtor”!
