Moving
Beyond
Sticky Notes: Making Design
Thinking Work in
the Real World
Erin Berman
Innovations Manager
San José Public Library
What in the world
is Design
Thinking?
“Design Thinking is a
methodology for innovation that
combines creative and
analytical approaches and
requires collaboration across
disciplines.
Why is Design Thinking Important?
All about putting people
first…
Human centered design is
designing by understanding
needs and having empathy.
Designing with people, not
just for people.
How are libraries
using Design
Thinking?
This is not the
Design Thinking
you’re looking for...Move beyond conference sessions and one
time brainstorms. Build Design Thinking into
your culture and process.
Design Thinking Roadmap:
Your Path to SuccessLet’s go on a journey together from problem to solution
through implementation and evaluation.
Stop #1:
Who will this project impact?
Stakeholder Mapping
Stop #2: Gaining Insight
Empathy is gained by
talking with
stakeholders.
Find out how they live
and what matters to
them.
There are several ways
to do this.
How do we gain insights?
Observations
Interviews
Surveys
Focus Groups
Stop #3: Defining the Problem
How Might We...
Stop #4: Brainstorming
SolutionsNow we know the problem and what people
want and need. How do we figure out how to
solve the problem?
Mindmapping
Broad themes which branch into specific
solutions
Creative Matrix
An idea generator powerhouse
Storyboarding
Tell a story about the
solution to your problem.
Decision Matrix
Figure out which solutions to work on.
Stop #5: No surprises here.
Rose, Thorn, Bud.
Positives
Negatives
Opportunities
Stop #6: Prototyping or “How to fail successfully”
Make it quick and cheap.
Iterate and fail successfully.
Stop #7: Pilot
Take it for a test run
Stop #8: Evaluate
Don’t just count the number of people. Make it meaningful.
