Page 3: IGNIS HYBRID

INTRODUCTIONSuzuki is well established globally for its expertise in small cars and the new Ignis compact crossover was launched in early 2017. Since launching its first car in 1955, the Suzulight, Suzuki has produced a vast range of significant models each tailored to the needs of its time.

Historically, Suzuki has earned high acclaim for its stylish, city oriented designs, compact and easy to manage dimensions while also offering good performance, favourable fuel economy and low emissions.

Suzuki Motor Corporation unveiled the Ignis for Europe at the 2016 Paris Motor Show as its new global compact crossover and it clearly demonstrated convenience and comfort in a stylish new exterior. It follows strong Suzuki DNA from every pore, while at the same time introduced an entirely new design with unique character. In addition to its simple and iconic styling, this compact SUV offers the functionality and performance to provide confident driving in a wide variety of conditions.

In addition to its stylish exterior design, the Ignis features excellent visibility, an easy to drive size, spacious cabin and ample luggage space. The development goal was to create purely iconic crossover styling that is undoubtedly Suzuki.

For August 2020 launch in the UK, Ignis has undergone a facelift with some striking styling upgrades for a more rugged ultra compact SUV appearance along with a new Hybrid powertrain. While retaining the iconic design characteristics of the current model, the new Ignis further reinforces its unique position as the only ultra-compact SUV on the market. It has a new front grille and bumpers, refined exterior and interior colours, and an efficiency-enhanced engine with expanded hybrid system capacity.

Since first launching in Europe in 2016, the Ignis was chosen as a top three finalist in the 2017 World Urban Car awards and has continued to gain popularity. The facelifted Ignis further builds on that iconic styling in a compact and functional package, increasing its appeal as a playful yet practical proposition in the market.

EXTERIORIngrained with Suzuki’s design heritage, including a slit-like C-pillar inherited from the first generation Cervo (SC100), blacked out A- and B- pillars, bumper garnish and clamshell bonnet, the Ignis utilises a simple design with a familiar, lovable expression, characterised by its unique headlights, black extended wheel arches*, and robust shoulders. The facelift model retains these iconic features, while adding a new Suzuki SUV-style 5-spoke front grille, along with front and rear bumpers featuring trapezoid shape silver under garnishes, amplifying the overall SUV character and unique style.

Body coloursIgnis is available in 13 colours of which seven are single-tone and six are dual-tone colours, These include three new shades – Caravan Ivory Pearl Metallic, Rush Yellow Metallic and Tough Khaki Pearl Metallic.

Optimised Insulation materialsDuring initial development, comprehensive evaluation was carried out to further reduce interior cabin noise and vibration. Enhanced insulation materials have been used throughout the car including new design noise absorbing silencers for under bonnet, dash cowling and moulded headlining. Lightweight construction double glazed door seals are also utilised.

Additional body reinforcements are also included for the tailgate frame, roof panel, suspension mounts and floor section.

INTERIORComplementing the characteristic styling of the exterior, the interior of the Ignis was designed with futuristic urban styling and sweeping horizontal lines that convey breadth and a feeling of space.

This stylish urban taste has been further enhanced in the facelift model, with new Lazuli Medium Blue Pearl and Medium Grey Metallic accents matched to grey or blue seat upholsteries. The instrument panel, featuring a newly designed meter cluster, has been updated with a contrast of black and white that is simple in composition but leaves a bold impression.

PLATFORM STRATEGY Under the ‘SUZUKI NEXT 100’ plan first announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015, Suzuki developed a new platform strategy for its future models and the Ignis was the second model (following Baleno) with this new generation platform to be introduced in Europe, this was followed by the Swift in June 2017.

This platform targets the reduction of weight as well as further increased rigidity. In initial development of the Ignis, body rigidity was enhanced by approximately 10 per cent and a new structure with very high tensile steel was incorporated to reduce the total vehicle weight by around 15 per cent. The lightest Ignis facelift model has a kerb weight of just 895kg even in the highly equipped SZ5 model.

SPECIFICATION HIGHLIGHTSStandard equipment for all Ignis models in the range is comprehensive and the SZ3 model includes six airbags, air conditioning, DAB radio with Bluetooth, 15-inch wheels, LED headlights, body coloured door mirrors, front electric windows, rear privacy glass and five seat capacity.

ENGINENew K12D EngineSuzuki first introduced its 1.2-litre Dualjet technlogy (K12C) in 2014, initially in the Swift, and then utilised in the Baleno model in June 2016 and Ignis in early 2017. This engine is now replaced by the new K12D Dualjet unit which offers greater fuel economy and even lower CO2 emissions.

The updated K12D 1.2-litre engine powering the new Ignis features a new dual injection system and offers both powerful response and high fuel efficiency. This high-level balance is made possible through advances that include an electric intake VVT (variable valve timing), a variable displacement oil pump and electric piston cooling jets. The exhaust camshaft side is controlled via a conventional Hydraulic VVT actuator.

In summary, Dualjet incorporates Suzuki’s engine technology and uses twin fuel injectors for improved fuel economy. Utilising Dualjet design that positions the fuel injectors very close to the engine inlet valves allows for a finer fuel atomisation (or mixture) which in turn provides a more effective transfer into the cylinder. Internal modifications to the engine include the use of an updated design inlet port and combustion chamber.

The piston crowns have a slight bowl shape to achieve higher air turbulence inside the cylinder and cooling oil jets for the pistons help reduce internal temperatures. Additionally, an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used which helps avoid abnormal combustion or ‘knocking’. The maximum power output is 83PS with a torque figure of 107Nm at just 2,800rpm.

Hybrid technology across the range – Enhanced hybrid systemFuel efficiency is further enhanced when paired with the self-charging hybrid system powered by a new lithium-ion battery with capacity upgraded from 3Ah to 10Ah to improve energy recovery efficiency.

Available as standard equipment for all Ignis models, the upgraded 12V Hybrid system is a compact and lightweight unit that incorporates an Integrated Starter Generator (known as ISG) which acts as both a generator and starter motor, the ISG is belt driven and assists the engine during vehicle take off and acceleration and also generates electricity through regenerative braking.

K12D Engine Ignis Hybrid System

10

Page 7: IGNIS HYBRID

13

The system also uses a compact high performance lithium-ion battery placed under the front passenger seat to store energy and incorporates an idle stop function operated via the Integrated Starter Generator. The hybrid system only uses its conventional engine starter motor when first started from cold, under all other conditions it uses the ISG unit to allow smooth and quiet engine restarts. The ISG unit has a power output of 2.3kW with a torque figure of 50Nm and the components of the system add just 6.2kg to the overall weight of the car.

The ISG generates electricity more efficiently than a conventional alternator through regenerative braking which is the term given to the transfer of kinetic heat energy into electrical energy. The ISG unit detects this as soon as the brake pedal is depressed and recharges both the lithium-ion battery and conventional 12 volt battery.

For the Ignis with 2WD manual transmission the Hybrid system helps Suzuki reach a CO2 emissions figure of just 114g/km (WLTP regulation) plus achieve a fuel consumption figure of 55.7mpg (WLTP) on the combined cycle.

Engine Auto Stop Start System. This system helps to further reduce fuel consumption by cutting the supply of fuel in the interval between when the car begins to decelerate and when it starts moving again. The engine is stopped for longer periods than conventional stop start systems and operates at speeds of less than 10mph when the drivers foot is removed from the clutch pedal and the gearbox is in neutral (or when the brake pedal is fully pressed on CVT versions). The engine then restarts as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed.

TRANSMISSIONSA five speed manual transmission is fitted as standard on all Ignis and the gear ratios are optimised to help provide a good combination of performance and fuel economy.

CVT Gearbox Suzuki’s CVT powertrain is available as an option on the facelifted Ignis SZ-T and SZ5 models with 2WD, and is combined with the 1.2 Dualjet Hybrid powertrain. This represents the first time hybrid benefits have been available in combination with an automatic type transmission on Ignis. The CVT system can vary the actual gear ratio continuously and stepless from low-speed to high-speed range depending on the driving conditions. The CVT allows improved driveability with reduced shift-shock in comparison with a conventional automatic transmission.

Page 8: IGNIS HYBRID

This fully automatic electrically-controlled transaxle consists of a continuously speed variable transmission design with a two-stage planetary gear unit and 1-speed reverse gear. By employing a planetary gear unit, this enables the gear ratio ranges to be expanded to offer both good response during acceleration and quieter running at high speeds.

The torque converter is of a 3-element, 1-step and 2-phase type and is equipped with an automatically controlled lock-up mechanism. The gear change device offers seven step gear programmes and consists of a planetary gear unit, multiple disc type clutch, multiple disc type brake, steel belt, primary pulley and secondary pulley.

4WD (ALLGRIP AUTO)The Ignis adopts Suzuki’s ALLGRIP ‘AUTO’ four-wheel drive system and is available as an option on the SZ5 manual model. First introduced in Swift, this is a well proven and simple fully automatic and permanent four-wheel drive layout which transfers additional torque to the rear wheels when required via a viscous coupling, further enhancing the already highly acclaimed cornering ability of the Ignis. It is also an ideal choice for customers living in rural areas who may need additional mobility across rougher terrain or for crossing slippery surfaces during winter months without owning a more conventional SUV sized vehicle.

The viscous coupling essentially takes on the role of a centre differential to connect the front and rear axles and is made up of two sets of annular metal plates which rotate in a casing containing a high viscosity silicon type fluid. In normal operating conditions the plates will turn at the same rate but when wheel slippage occurs the silicon fluid will quickly become highly viscous when heated by increased friction and shear caused by differences between the movements of the plates.

In summary, one part of the viscous coupling is connected to the driving axle and one part to the driven axle. When the front wheels spin the centre viscous coupling locks due to friction and shear caused by the differences in motion of the plates which will then rapidly transfer more torque to the rear axle.

Enhancements to the Ignis ALLGRIP ‘AUTO’ system include Hill Descent Control and Grip Control. Grip Control activates on slippery surfaces at speeds of less than 18mph. Once switched on by the driver, it focuses torque on the driven wheels that have grip and will quickly apply braking to the wheel that is spinning.

Hill Descent Control activates once switched on by the driver and when the vehicle is travelling on an incline at under approximately 15mph in first or second gear.

14

Page 9: IGNIS HYBRID

Thanks to the use of small and lightweight components Ignis ALLGRIP is just 45kg heavier than its equivalent 2WD model. Due to the location of the rear differential for the 4WD system, the luggage capacity is 204 litres versus 260 litres for the 2WD model.

With lightweight components and available in combination with the 1.2 Dualjet Hybrid powertrain, Ignis ALLGRIP Auto models have impressive fuel economy of 51.9 mpg and low CO2 emissions of just 123 g/km (both WLTP combined).

SAFETY • Comprehensive list of active and passive safety equipment.• Six airbags fitted as standard. • Dual Camera Brake Support system fitted as standard on SZ5 model.• Light, impact absorbing body; speed limiter; ESP® * (Electronic Stability Programme), and

tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

The Ignis’s passive and active safety systems are designed to intelligently anticipate and react to potentially dangerous situations with an excellent level of protection. One of its major safety features is Total Effective Control Technology which is a concept for occupant protecting impact absorption and low weight developed by Suzuki. Extensive use of high tensile steel and computer aided engineering technologies make the body light, highly crashworthy as well as fuel efficient.

The Ignis adopts Suzuki‘s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) concept that provides a high level of collision safety. Some of the features include collapsible structures that absorb impact energy in the event of a collision, a frame structure that effectively disperses impact energy, and rigid cabin structure.

Other safety features include ESP® (Electronic Stability Program), which helps ensure stability while driving, along with front, side and curtain airbags to protect occupants in the event of a collision from the front or side.

As an additional safety feature, stereo cameras mounted on each side of the drivers interior rear view mirror, function in a similar way to the human eye, detecting lane markings as well as objects ahead (including pedestrians) and also their distance away. Based on the size and shape of the object, the cameras can determine whether it is a pedestrian or another vehicle. These capabilities enable the inclusion of the following three advanced safety functions:

17

NOTE: ESP* is designed to help keep the vehicle under control. However, the degree of engine torque reduction, the braked wheels and the brake force applied vary according to driving conditions. ESP® is essentially a system to assist stable driving. In the case of slippage or skidding that exceeds the limits of grip between tyres and road surface, ESP® will still function but may not be fully effective. ESP is a registered trademark of Daimler AG.

Page 10: IGNIS HYBRID

• Dual Camera Brake Support (DCBS) on SZ5 models: When travelling above approximately 3mph and the system detects a risk of collision with the vehicle in front, it warns the driver to apply the brakes. At higher speeds if it senses the possibility of a collision, it warns the driver with a buzzer and also via a notification on the multi information display. The system warning can also be set for either Far or Near distance via a button on the dashboard.

If the probability of a collision has increased, the system activates brake assist which increases the braking force during emergency braking. If the system determines that a collision is unavoidable, it applies the brakes automatically. The system thus helps prevent collisions when the vehicle is driving at low speeds and helps reduce damage in the event of an unavoidable collision.

• Lane departure warning function on SZ5 models: When the vehicle is travelling at vehicle speeds of approximately 37mph or above and is departing the lane without the driver using a turn signal, the system vibrates the steering wheel and lights a warning indicator in the instrument cluster to draw attention to lane departures caused by factors such as inattention to the road.

• Weaving alert function on SZ5 models: When the vehicle is traveling at vehicle speeds of approximately 37mph or above and is weaving from side to side within a lane, the system sounds a warning buzzer and lights an indicator on the instrument panel. This quickly draws the driver’s attention to weaving caused by drowsiness or other factors.

Light, impact-absorbing TECT bodyThe body embodies Suzuki’s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) concept for occupant protecting impact absorption and low weight. Extensive use of ultra high tensile steel helps to make the new Ignis outstandingly crashworthy and also fuel efficient.

The body frame has smooth curving lines with fewer weld joints that enable reductions in required reinforcements. This structure is not only lighter but disperses collision force energy more efficiently and improves overall crash safety.

This high level of weight reduction has only been made possible by analysing the car as a whole, not by simply analysing individual parts. Technologies to reduce weight have been applied to the vehicle body as well as mechanical parts including the doors, seats, interior parts, suspension, engine and brakes.

• Android Auto extends the Android platform into the car in a way that‘s purpose-built for driving. It is designed to minimise distraction so you can focus on driving with Google™ services like Google Maps™, Google Search™.

• Apple CarPlay allows iPhone users to get directions optimised for traffic, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music, all in a way that allows you to stay focused on the road with Siri or a touch screen.

• MirrorLink lets various applications on your smartphone appear on the vehicle’s touchscreen display, allowing you to access your smartphone’s features.

Seating and Luggage capacityDuring initial design, adopting Suzuki’s new generation platform strategy minimised the size of the engine compartment which enabled maximising the space available for cabin occupants and luggage. Within its compact body size, Ignis features a roomy and comfortable cabin with ample space between occupants, ample headroom and legroom contributing to its relaxing environment.

The Ignis SZ3 model has a fixed rear seat and the luggage area has a capacity of 267 litres (VDA) with the rear seat in its upright position. On SZ-T and SZ5 models the two individual rear seats can slide 165mm to provide either greater luggage capacity or more rear passenger leg room; additionally, the seat backrests have a two position recline function. The luggage capacity increases to 514 litres with both rear seats folded and can be as high as 1,100 litres if fully loaded to the roof line.

Hill Hold ControlAvailable accross the Ignis range, Hill Hold Control makes hill starts much easier by preventing the vehicle from rolling backwards for two seconds as soon as the driver removes his or her foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal.

Guide Me LightsFor convenience and safety after parking the car at night or when returning to it, all Ignis models are fitted as standard with a ‘guide me light’ function that enables the dipped beam headlamps to remain on for 10 seconds after the door is locked / unlocked. This facility can also be adjusted to up to 25 seconds duration via the settings mode of the instrument cluster.

Depending on variant and transmission, kerb weight ranges from 895kg to 940kg making it the lightest compact crossover amongst its competitors.

SuspensionThe front suspension is of MacPherson strut design. During development of the Ignis, revised shapes for the lower arms and suspension frame were utilised and improved strut damping adopted for higher rigidity and also promote better driving stability.

Enhanced cornering stability has been achieved by incorporating the rear wheel suspension with a stabiliser inside the hollow of the intermediate Torsion beam. The rear suspension design utilises conventional coil springs and provides superior rigidity and ride comfort.

Fundamental design and initial development work for the Ignis was undertaken in Japan. This was supported by a full evaluation programme of suspension and steering tuning in Europe with Suzuki’s technical teams also carrying out their important testing in the UK.

COMFORT AND CONVENIENCEStorageThe cabin features extremely convenient storage space. In addition to the two-section glove box design, there are bottle holders in the centre and rear consoles as well as in the front and rear doors.

VisibilityWith 180mm of minimum ground clearance, the Ignis enhances driving performance on rough roads, while also enabling a higher seating position for clearer visibility. The slightly higher seat position also contributes to the ease of entering and exiting the car.

Smartphone Linkage Display Audio (SLDA)The audio on SZ-T and SZ5 models incorporates a large seven inch touch panel display that is as intuitive as a smartphone and also allows the driver to use certain applications with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or Mirrorlink connection with satellite navigation and three dimensional map standard equipment on SZ5 models. As an option, SZ-T models can be upgraded to satellite navigation via an SD card.

* Measured using the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) method, with the rear seatback fixed in the raised position.
