Born in Éibar (Guipúzcoa) in 1870, he was the son of notable damascening artist Plácido Zuloaga and nephew of the famous potter Daniel Zuloaga. As a child he worked in his father’s workshop, where he first came into contact with drawing and engraving. In 1896 he moved to Madrid. He travelled to Rome in 1889 and, a year later, to Paris where he attended the ‘La Palette’ Academy. There he met Degas, Gauguin and Toulouse Lautrec and was drawn to Impressionism. In 1895 he moved to Seville, where he developed a great interest in bullfighting and Andalusian themes. In 1898 he moved to Segovia and moved over the expressive painting, with its predominant Castilian landscapes and people. He died in Madrid in 1945.
