Zielsetzung
Gemäß IFRS 8 soll die Segmentberichterstattung dem
Abschlussadressaten bei diversifizierten Unternehmen
zusätzliche Informationen über die Entwicklung der
wesentlichen Bereiche geben, weil bei aggregierten Daten
im Abschluss möglicherweise die Entwicklung sowie die
Risiken und Chancen der einzelnen operativen Segmenten
eines Unternehmens nicht mehr voneinander zu
unterscheiden sind. Im Gesamtabschluss werden positive
und negative Entwicklungen möglicherweise saldiert
dargestellt.

Gemäß IFRS 8.2 ist die Segmentberichterstattung von kapitalmarktorientierten Unternehmen für vollständig veröffentlichte Abschlüsse (Einzel- und Konzernabschluss) anzuwenden.
Ein Unternehmen ist kapitalmarktorientiert, wenn seine

schuldrechtliche Wertpapiere
öffentlich gehandelt werden oder aber die Emission solcher Papiere in die Wege geleitet ist.

Anwendungsbereich
Ein zur Segmentberichterstattung verpflichtetes Unternehmen hat im Rahmen der Zwischenberichterstattung die dort dargelegten Angabenpflichten zu erfüllen (IAS 34.16 (g)).
Gemäß IFRS 8.3 müssen bei einer freiwilligen Segmentberichterstattung die Anforderungen dieses Standards vollständig erfüllt sein. Sofern die Angaben nicht vollumfänglich IFRS 8 entsprechen, dürfen die Angaben nicht als Segmentinformationen bezeichnet werden. Hierdurch will das IASB vermeiden, dass Unternehmen ausschließlich Segmentinformationen veröffentlichen, die ihrer Jahresabschlusspolitik entsprechen.

Anwendung bei Konzernen
Grundsätzlich sind die Segmentinformationen im Einzelabschluss eines Unternehmens darzustellen, wenn dass Unternehmen nach IFRS 8.2 (a) zur Segmentberichterstattung verpflichtet ist.
Ebenfalls sind die Segmentinformationen im Konzernabschluss eines Unternehmens darzustellen, wenn dass Unternehmen nach IFRS 8.2 (b) zur Segmentberichterstattung verpflichtet ist.
Sofern die Segmentinformationen in einem Bericht präsentiert werden, der neben dem Konzernabschluss auch den Einzelabschluss enthält, sind die Segmentinformationen nach IFRS 8.4 nur auf Basis des Konzernabschlusses anzugeben.

Segmentbilanzierungs- und Bewertungsmethoden
IFRS 8.25 legt für die Segmentberichterstattung fest, dass
sich nicht nur die Auswahl der Segmente an der internen
Berichterstattung orientieren soll, sondern auch die Frage
der Bilanzierungs- und Bewertungsmethoden. Hier liegt ein
wesentlicher Unterschied zum bisherigen IAS 14, der für die
Segmentberichterstattung dieselben Bilanzierungs- und
Bewertungsmethoden wie für den Konzernabschluss und
damit die IFRS vorgeschrieben hat. Im Ergebnis muss die
interne Berichterstattung auch in Bezug auf die Bilanzierung
und Bewertung übernommen werden.
