  • The first edition of the Online Short film and Documentary festival jointly organized by the Orange Academy and the IFFT will begin on 21st September of this month. This will be a three day festival with competition and non-competition sessions. The competition session has a theme: Alone, Togeth-er. In addition to this, there is a retrospective on great Chilean documentary film maker Patricio Guzman, a country focus on Japan. In commemoration of 100th birth anniversary of Satyajith Ray, the festival will be screening a documentary on Tagore made by Ray. Paying homage to the Czechoslovakian maestro Jiri Menzel, a 7-hour long documentary made on him by Indian film maker, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur will be screened. Mr. Shivendra Singh will also be talking on the inaugural session about the “Czech new wave”. The festival also pays homage to one of the pioneers of Indian film and media studies, Fr. Gaston Roberge. A documentary made on Fr. Gaston Roberge directed by Sri. K.G.Das will be screened in the festival. Dr. Someshwar Bhowmik, author and film critic will be talking about the contributions of Fr. Gaston Roberge. Jury Chairman, P.N.Ramachandra’s documentary will be screened in a separate session titled “Jury Chairman’s Films”. Select documentaries produced by the EMMRC, Calicut University and which have won recognitions will be presented in a separate session. In the Maters and Classics session, we

have the animations of Norman Mclaren. The online festival has a rich diversity of representation in terms of content and narratives. The festival has chosen 22 entries for the competition in which 20 are short films and two are documentaries. The eminent panel of jury is chaired by noted documentary film maker and teacher, Sri. P.N.Ramachandra and it has Dr.Rekha Raj, Academic, Dalit-Feminist Scholar and Writer and Sri. Aditya Shankar, bi-lingual poet and film critic as members. The jury will be selecting the best among the entries in terms of different categories that we announced. There will be open forums where the audience can interact with film makers and also we have a webinar on the topic: Creativ-ity and Crisis in the period of Covid-19.As for an online festival, this is abundantly rich, I would say. Now, many other organiza-tions and festivals- national and internation-al- have organized online festivals. This is a new and innovative experience. Much has to be learned from this. This is no ground for shifting from regular festival events because it is an altogether personal and collective experience. Nevertheless, the instinct for exploration and inventiveness has motivated all of us to seek out newer pathways for engagement and collective expressions in the new media universe. It is not about just screening of films and categorization; it is more about searching for newer meanings and newer spaces for dialogues when we are all passing through one of the worst of crises encountered by humanity due to the world wide pandemic. Our spirit behooves us: we don’t stand alone, we stand together! Damodar Prasad. Festival Director

Ram, a business man who was an addict of Apple Siri Voice Application, spent extremely long hours in office. His wife was disturbed with his busy work schedules. Once on Christmas eve, Ram got confirmation from an Australian Client that they will credit 1 Million Dollars that night itself, for his new project, but that day he found his wife left him. On that X-mas eve he had drunk, slipped and fell down to get a head injury. He tried to make a call with the help of Siri application but failed . The watchman who was treated badly by Ram reached for Ram’s help, but Ram was dead. 1 million dollars was credited in Ram’s account, but only after his death.

In the wake of COVID 19 pandemic, a nationwide lock-down was clamped in India for 21 days from the midnight of 24th March to 14th April 2020, which was extended subsequently. More than 600 people lost their lives due to starvation, police brutality and lock down induced accidents during this period. The film has been shot using a mobile phone and depicts as a 'Cat and Mouse game' as we have seen and heard in fables and cartoons.

While society is passing through a painful period of sufferings, there are many good Samaritans in the society who stand alongside us for our safety. But, knowingly or unknowingly, we fail to identify these well-wishers. The short film ‘Along with’ (‘Oppam’ in Malayalam) reveals these good Samaritans who stand for others’ safety and goodness. ‘Along with’ unravels the dedication and sacrifice of cleaning workers, the unsung heroes of our society.

ATOM (Short film) Dir : Kiran K RMal - 9.55 “The film unravels a day of two human beings who belong to entirely two different worlds. Society and its institutions invisibly come and reach out help them in their solitude.

Life is not a mad running race where everyone is focused only on their individual goals. The multiple handoffs in life is clearly depicted in this short film. The film portrays the selfless rural lives, who self-adjust to others' needs and help others complete the race called life. The film also mentions the theme of secularism in a subtle way. Characters in the film lend a helping hand to the needy; the difference in their religion / background never ever crosses their mind. Baton brings out secular interactions as a positive feeling through-out the film , especially at a time religious differences create discord in society.

The film focus on the struggle of an innocent child while fighting against the system of naturally racial society. He can't ever accept that his mother falls under the title ""ugly"" even when the society is trying to establish the conventions. This little step taken by the child left all of us in wonder whether all we once constructed could ever fall down."

Through a combination of animation and live action, this lively musical film demonstrates, without dialogue, the many patterns that a canon can take depending on the number of participants and the length of the piece of music in question.

She explains the way solar systems are created, and then links in her astronomy work with her interest in tapestry -- a fastidious process of building on previous work, slowly and carefully, to make greater discov-eries.

This short piece by Patricio Guzman tracks an engineer at one of Chile's observatories, as he discusses the telescope and how it can be used to watch the stars. There's little more than him pottering around inside the telescope, fiddling with the electronics and talking about how people use it, but it's pleasant enough.
