    That oily residue

In 1973, OPECs oil embargo cut petroleum supplies to many countries, causing both shortages and skyrocketing prices. In 2008, as yet, there are no lines of fuming drivers lined up at the one station in the neighborhood with gaso-line available, but the skyrocketing prices are with us again in abundance; and so far, at least in this country, the federal government shows little sign of taking any real action, either in the long-range form of our long-awaited national energy policy, or in giving also long-awaited public scrutiny to oil companies skyrocketing profits. (Research, they tell us. Ive got your research right here, fella, we respond.)

In the January 1974 issue of the Industrial Fabric Products Review, editor Dale Horejs wrote: The fact is that the causes of this situation were sown some time ago and have only been accelerated recently by political events. Well feel the effects for years, and probably forever. Yet, while it will sway

the pace of things and change the life styles, once the rules and regulations are known, the ball game will be played as hard as ever. Yet in his Forecast 1974 article in that issue, he also notes that the industry is not without problems. Shortages are everywherein labor, raw materials, chemi-cals and now energy.

In 2008, we also have a world economy that is on the brink of major industrial shifts.

For all those things outside of our control, however, theres even more helpful advice on how to weather finan-cial storms and stay in that ball game:

Review your balance sheet. Reduce where you can, make sure your credit is good, and use technology wisely. But keep the resources youll need on the upswing.

Review your customers. Know what they need, and stay poised to provide it. Maintain a very high level of cus-tomer service, and add value in unexpected but memorable ways. Build community ties that will put you first in line when people need your products and services.

Maintain product quality. Search out new products and markets. Somebodys always going to be making moneyfind out where and be ready to move in.

Diversify and launch. Tough economic times force you to take a hard look at your procedures, processes, products, and customers. Use this time to help you spot opportuni-ties for new products and new markets.

For myself, me and my 1995 Saturn (both with most of our original parts) will weather the gas prices somehow, even if I leave it in the garage most of the time and invest in a good pair of roller skates and a long tow rope. As we continue working on our 2008 issues of the redesigned Specialty Fabrics Review, and plan for next years Buyers Guide, I hope youll let me know how youre working on overcoming your business challenges this year, and what you might like

    to see next.

    Galynn Nordstrom, Senior Editor

State of the Industry 2008Economic pundits are full of predictions and advice, of varying utility, but it helps to have information drawn directly from the specialty fabrics industry. In the May issue of Specialty Fabrics Review, we included Part I of the 2008 State of the Industry report from IFAIs market research manager Jeff Rasmussen, discussing overall market issues and trends in the industry, particu-larly in the U.S. Watch for Part II in our June issue, which will focus more directly on some key market seg-ments: awnings and canopies, tent rental, truck covers and tarps, and safety and protective products.

The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive.

The great opportunity is where you are.

    Sf Featureby Jeff Rasmussen

T he global textile industry has undergone tre-mendous change through the last 10 years, and the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) does regular research to keep members informed on industry economic trends and the outlook for all the different industry segments that use specialty fabrics, the term given to textile products manufactured mainly for their performance and functional properties, rather than for decorative purposes. Theyre classified into many fields, such as automotive applications, medical textiles, geotextiles, agrotextiles, and protective clothing and gear. This annual report focuses mostly on the U.S. specialty fabrics

marketplace, particularly as it relates to worldwide markets: key developments, forces, and trends, especially the shift among U.S. producers of textiles away from home furnishings and apparel textiles to performance fabrics. (For our purposes, composites and disposable nonwovens are not included here, although they are also playing an increasing role in textile technology.)Part 1 of our research results are included in this issue, focusing

on the U.S. textile industry, global trade issues and economic predic-tions. Part 2, which will be included in the June issue of the Review, will focus specifically on the outlook for end-product manufacturers in areas like awnings and canopies, tents, truck covers and tarpaulins, and safety and protective products.

From fashion to functionThe textile industry is undergoing a major reorientation toward non-apparel applications of textiles. The processes involved in producing specialty fabrics require expensive equipment and skilled workers and are, at least for the moment, concentrated in developed countries. Ap-plications include automotive uses such as seat belts, airbags and other internal components; filtration and abrasive materials; high-end out-door furniture; medical applications such as thermal protection and blood-absorbing materials; awnings and canopies, and many other specialized products and applications.

State of the industry 2008The U.S. specialty fabrics marketplace, and the growing global market shift to specialty fabrics.

Section 2: Chemicals, Coatings and CompoundsThis section includes chemicals and compounds used in the finishing and processing of specialty fabrics, as well as aftermarket sprays, cleaners, coatings and other chemical applications.

Section 3: Hardware, Findings and AccessoriesPhysical items used as parts of end products are listed in this section.

Section 4: Equipment and ToolsThis section includes equipment and tools used to make finished products, but which are not themselves part of the finished products.

Section 5: Services to ManufacturersServices for all parts of the specialty fabrics industry are listed here.

The Corporate DirectoryWhen youve found the names of the manufacturers you need in sections 16, turn to this section for complete contact information on all the companies that partici-pated in this years Buyers Guide. Please note:

IFAI membership classification follows each com-pany name, in parentheses. Details on each IFAI mem-bership classification are listed at the beginning of the Corporate Directory. (Companies with no membership classification are nonmembers that are advertising in the Buyers Guide.)

Company names that begin with one or more ini-tials and are associated with a persons name are listed under the first letter of the last name. Companies using both first and last names are also listed under the first let-ter of the last name. (For example, L. B. White Co. Inc. is listed under W; Wm. T. Burnett & Co. is listed under B.)

Company names that begin with a number are listed according to the spelling of the number. (For example, 303 Products Inc. is listed under T.)

Each company listing also includes all the product categories selected by that company this year, as well as any trademarks or trade names claimed by that com-pany. If the company has an advertisement included in this years Buyers Guide, the page number of that ad will be included at the beginning of the listing.

Trademarks and Trade NamesIf you know the name of a product but arent sure of the name of the company that supplies it, this directory is an alphabetical listing of industry trademarks and trade names supplied to us by this years Buyers Guide participants.
