Email address:
for others; (b) performed to benefit oneself,
especially in disregard of the welfare of others." It
went on to clarify: "at the expense of others"! (The
italics are mine.)
And this is how the general public sees the word. Is
AA seeking pleasure at the expense of and without
regard to others? Of course not.
Obviously, I am staying sober primarily for myself,
and this is a form of selfishness. But now I also
want to do right for myself, my wife, my children,
other AAs, and even the world, if I'm able. I know
that I'm being motivated by an unseen force for
good that certainly isn't rooted in my will or in
selfishness. I believe that any “goodness” I may
have sprung from my attempts at Step Three. If
that's selfish, then so are God, life, and the world.
I believe that any AA member can perform a good
deed for another person without analyzing the
ultimate benefit or lack of benefit to himself. If his
own happiness or serenity is destroyed by
unselfish acts, I suggest he return to Step Three.
Can God's will get him into trouble? Having faith
that God's will is pure, unselfish love shouldn't hurt
a bit. The Second Tradition applies here and is
easily understood in its reference to "a loving God."
So, surely, "selfish" is the worst possible single
word to describe AA, especially for "goodness" I
attracting outsiders or for any public-relations
purpose.
"Love" is a far more appropriate word. AA is a
loving, selfless program, inspired by a loving God.
None of that love can be put under a microscope
or intellectualized by man-made words.
THE GRAPEVINE OCTOBER 1972 BY: R. B. FREEPORT
I'D BEEN SOBER only ninety days when I read the
Grapevine's March 1970 "cover story," "It's a
Selfish Program."
The word "selfish," applied to the whole AA
program as a one-word description, raised my
supersensitive hack writer's hackles and rattled
my semantic alarm system. How could that word,
which is generally accepted as bad, apply to a
program that is rooted in God and love?
I didn't understand the writer's "logical"
explanation, but I buried my confusion and
resentment with the rationale that I was, after all,
a very shaky, brand-new AA baby. Who was I to
pick apart my thin lifeline into the sober world?
The more love I found in the program, the more
appalled I became as I heard more speakers use
"selfish" as a one-word description of AA. One
climax occurred as I overheard my (social drinker)
wife answering a question. We live in a small town,
and the questioner had heard I was in AA. The first
words of explanation from my wife were "Well, it's
a selfish program." This so baffled the "civilian"
that further explanations were impossible.
"Of all the words!" I screamed. "Why that?" I
shouldn't have blamed her; she'd heard the word
often enough at meetings.
Then bang!--there it was again, "selfish" right on
the August 1971 Grapevine cover, and the story
said, "AA is generally agreed to be a selfish
program."
Who agreed? Was I going crazy?
My big new Webster's explained "selfish" as: (a)
"concerned excessively or exclusively with
oneself; seeking or concentrating on one's own
advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard
AN UNSELFISH PROGRAM FOR SELF
