President’s Message
Well, it seems like I just finished the last President’s letter and I am
hunting and pecking again! We seem to be off to a pretty good start
as the various committees have started working on their projects; so
thanks to you all.
Membership dues are coming in at a pretty good clip but we still have a good many
outstanding. Please get those checks in; we are working hard to improve the business
climate for you but we can’t do it without your help.
We had a great mixer last Thursday at Posh Organics and Gifts, Debbie Dix did a
wonderful job of hosting us, her gifts are nice, you can find a little something for
anyone, and the atmosphere of her shop really ties in well with the ambiance being
created in Sopchoppy.
Our Commerce and Government committee has taken on the challenge of working hand
in hand on the formation of a new code enforcement ordinance that was in the making.
One of our goals this year is to be more proactive on upcoming county policy so that
your views are represented as these policy issues develop. Thanks go out to Ralph
Thomas our Chair, Paul Johnson, and Chuck Robinson for their involvement.
The Business Excellence Award Banquet is just around the corner and the nomination
forms will be showing up in your inbox soon. Be sure to nominate a deserving business
for any of the categories listed. The event is scheduled for May 19th, so please mark
your calendars. Jo Ann Palmer will be putting this event together as she so ably did
last year.
The education committee has rolled out this year’s class schedule so if you need a lit-
tle help, we are here for you. The schedule of classes is listed in this edition of the
paper so check it out. Thanks to Kimberly Moore for putting this together for us.
We are turning into the home stretch on the Low Country Boil; Sponsorships have
been very generous, and we are hoping for a successful event. We are going to have a
good time but it would be more fun if you were there also, so please buy a couple of
tickets and join us for a night of great food, door prizes, friends, music, and dancing!
We need your help to fund the TCC scholarship, and draperies for the Old Court-
house. Remember to mark your calendars for April 2nd 6pm to 11pm! The Chamber’s
first annual Low Country Boil with fresh local shrimp, Mack’s meats smoked sausage,
new taters, and sweet corn; don’t miss it!!

Festive Atmosphere Prevails at Posh Java, Organics & Gifts Chamber
Mixer
Posh Java, Organics & Gifts, located in downtown
Sopchoppy, hosted a business networking mixer on
Thursday, February 17, 2011, for the Wakulla
County Chamber of Commerce. The event featured
complimentary food, organic wine tasting provided
by Two Blondes Liquor, (owner, Nancy Matheny),
and live music performed by Chelsea Dix Kessler
(fiddle and vocals), Red Barnes (guitar and vocals), and Billy Samford
(banjo). The event was festive and a huge success, with approximately 60 Chamber members at-
tending, between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
“This mixer was a testament to the power of community involvement, support, commitment and
investment,” said Co Owner, Debbie Dix. “We have invaluable friends
who volunteered their time and energy to help with the mixer, and
ensure that the evening went smoothly; without them, we couldn’t
have made this event so enjoyable, nor could we continue to offer
the quality of customer service and community activities that we
do,” added Dix.
Posh Java, Organics & Gifts is owned
by Dix and partner, Pat Bishop. The
business, which opened in July of 2010, offers Fair Trade and locally
handcrafted gifts items; toxin-free bath, body and beauty items; a
natural food store featuring organic, gluten free, and unique prod-
ucts; and a café serving baked goods created by Dix, (soups and
sandwiches for lunch, cappuccinos, smoothies, teas, and coffee
drinks), all using ingredients unadulterated by pesticides and chemi-
cals. Dix often carries vegan and gluten free homemade goods to accommodate people who are fol-
lowing special diets, and enjoys preparing specialty foods for those customers who make re-
quests. The shop has recently added live evening performances, featuring artists and musicians
who share their original work.
Our year long Shop Local advertising campaign has come to a close, but don’t forget our local
shops when you need something. They may not be able to match the big boxes on price, but think
of the gas and time you will save, the job you will support, and the benefit to your county in sales
taxes that helps support your rec. park, library, etc. With this in mind, don’t forget to check your
chamber membership directory when any need arises; we are all in this community together and
need to support each other!
Yours in Service
John W. Shuff
President, Wakulla County Chamber of Commerce
“Posh Java has a saying, ‘Helping you, to help yourself, while helping others,” said Dix. “We embrace all
people who are positively moving in the direction of community support, working toward healthier life-
styles, and who want to learn and grow to make a change in their lives and the lives of others.”
Posh Java, Organics & Gifts is located on the corner of Rose St. and Winthrop Ave., in downtown Sop-
choppy. The shop is open Wednesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, from
10 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed on Monday and Tuesday. Additionally, Posh is open later during live perform-
ances and special events. For additional information, please phone (850) 962-1010 or email
