IES Celebrates Its 60th Anniversary

The IEEE Industrial Electronics

Society (IES) celebrates its 60th

anniversary this year. As this is

an important milestone for the Soci-

ety, it is time to review how the Soci-

ety and technologies have evolved

over the last 60 years. With this in

mind, several well-known authors

have prepared review articles for the

next special issue of the magazine. I

hope you enjoy reading them since

they are a deep review of what is state

of the art of the main technologies in

the IES’s field of interest.

An anniversary like this is also a

time to think about our future. The 20

technical committees that manage

the IES technical activities have the

important task of reviewing and de-

fining their upcoming activities to

make the IES’s future even brighter.

Recently, the IES held an Officers

Meeting in Madrid with the aim of

defining the main activities of the IES,

such as upcoming conferences, publi-

cations, membership, and technical

activities. The adaptation of our con-

stitution and Bylaws to new IEEE

policy was discussed. At this meet-

ing, IES participation on new joint

publications with other IEEE Soci-

eties was reported, in particular IEEE

Transactions on Sustainable Energies,

IEEE Transactions on Smart Grids, and

Journal of Photovoltaic

Systems. Cooperation with

Societies that have simi-

lar technical interests

were reviewed. The sis-

ter Societies’ (IEEE Power

& Energy, IEEE Industry

Applications, and IEEE

Power Electronics) new agreement

for cooperation was discussed in

particular. Finally, we talked about

the main topics that are to be

addressed at the up-

coming Administrative

Committee meeting in

Gdansk, Poland.

In conclusion, I’d like

to remember the vic-

tims of the recent earth-

quake in Japan. We wish

them the best and send our support to

the Japanese people and especially to

our colleagues.
