IENE Infra Eco Network Europe

IENE is a network of experts in the field of ecology and linear infrastructure. It aims to promote a secure and environmentally sustainable European infrastructure network. The IENE consists of individual members, government agencies, academics, consultants, companies and non-governmental organizations. IENE periodically organizes international workshops, meetings and conferences.

International conferences happen every two years and each year are held in a different country. Next year (2020) the University of Évora will be hosting this event, between 6th and 9th of April. “LIFE LINES - Linear Infrastructure Networks with Ecological Solutions” will be the theme of the Conference, the same name as the LIFE LINES Project coordinated by the same academy. The final seminar of the LIFE LINES project will take place during this conference and will be open to the whole community.

IENE 2020 Goals

Increase the sustainability of linear infrastructures; Discuss the success and failures of mitigation and monitoring measures

already implemented; Discuss the role of legislation, financing and civil society involvement in

promoting sustainable measures.

Framework

The rapid growth of linear infrastructure networks worldwide is posing a global threat to biodiversity and ecosystem services. Solutions have been implemented in recent decades to minimize the impacts of these infrastructures and new mitigation models and new ways of thinking have emerged. Linear infrastructure’ habitats are increasingly being viewed as an opportunity for biodiversity conservation and contributing for developing a Green Infrastructure.

IENE 2020 will have thematic sessions, side events, workshops, training sessions and field trips. We challenge the researchers, engineers, landscape planners, managers, administrators and policy makers to attend this conference. Together they will be able to discuss sustainable measures to reconcile linear infrastructure and biodiversity.

Why

Every year thousands of animals are road killed, hit by trains, or colliding with medium and high voltage power lines. In an area where biodiversity is still well preserved, but with several of linear infrastructures (roads, railways and medium and high voltage lines) these may undermine the state of animal populations.

Mission The LIFE LINES Project was created with the purpose of minimizing the negative effect of these infrastructures on fauna and, at the same time, promoting the creation of a Green Infrastructure along them to support the increase and conservation of the biodiversity of the territory in which it operates.

This project began in 2015 and will end in 2020. It takes place in Alentejo Central in an area crossed by the main land transport corridor between Lisbon and Madrid, where there is a high concentration of highways and power lines for the transmission and distribution of energy.

The IENE acts in the field of ecology and linear infrastructures, and by bringing together many international experts and decision makers, reaches a wide audience;
