    ENGLISH LANGUAGE

    REQUIREMENTS

    The State Regents require a minimum TOEFL orIELTS score for admission to a State System institu-tion. Those not meeting these standards must have aminimum score on TOEFL or IELTS andmust suc-cessfully complete a minimum of 12 weeks of studyat an approved intensive English program (IEP). Therequirements are as follows:

    Oklahoma has 39 accredited public and independ-ent colleges and universities. A map of institutionsin the state is located on page one of this guide.

    Oklahoma has 11 approved intensive English lan-guage programs. Graduate: 550 or higher on TOEFL or 6.5 on

    Higher education in Oklahoma is affordable.Comparing tuition costs with similar institutions inother regions of the United States, Oklahomahigher education is a great educational value. Stu-dents from moderate-income families are particu-

    larly pleased with Oklahoma institutions tuitionand fee schedules.

    ACCREDITATION

    Oklahoma provides safe campuses and communi-ties, with crime rates generally lower than otherregions.

    Oklahoma is the center, the heartland, of our coun-try offering a genuine American experience tointernational students and is perfectly located fortravel both arrival in the United States and visit-

    Oklahoma is culturally diverse with representa-tives from all major ethnic groups among our citi-zens. Oklahoma also has a large Native Americanpopulation and wide access to Native Americanculture, art, pow-wows and festivals.

    The accreditation of educational institutions and pro-grams in the United States is not centralized and var-ies by the category of school type and program. InOklahoma, the Higher Learning Commission of theNorth Central Association of Colleges and Schoolsaccredits all public colleges and universities. Inde-pendent universities may be accredited by variousassociations, including the Accrediting Council forIndependent Colleges and Schools. Some programs

    within colleges or universities may carry program-matic accreditation from a specialized accreditingassociation. Intensive English programs are approvedby the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Educa-tion. All schools and programs listed in this guide areappropriately accredited. Prospective students areencouraged to ask school officials for additional in-formation about accreditation and affiliation withprofessional associations.

    TRANSPORTATION

    Oklahoma is located near the geographical center ofthe United States. Major interstate highways cross

    Oklahoma, connecting the east and west coasts andthe north and south borders of the nation. Interna-tional visitors find easy access to Oklahoma throughWill Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City orTulsa International Airport. Several commercial car-riers provide service in and out of the state daily.

    OKLAHOMA WEATHER

    Oklahoma is well-known for having the variety pro-vided by all four seasons. Its long and beautiful falland spring seasons provide wonderful interludes be-tween warm summers and occasionally snowy win-ters. At 1,200 feet (366 meters) above sea level,

    Oklahoma has an ideal relative humidity. It is one ofAmericas sunniest states with an average of 3,000hours of sunshine annually. The average temperatureis 61F (16C); the average annual rainfall is 32inches (81 centimeters); the average annual snowfallis 9 inches (23 centimeters).

    OKLAHOMA HISTORY

    Oklahoma has a unique history, unlike any other statein the United States. Once known as Indian Territory,

    Oklahoma is still closely associated with NativeAmerican culture, sharing this legacy through festi-vals, museums and the daily lives of Oklahomans.

    Additionally, due to migration in the early 1800s,Oklahoma became home to a mix of different cul-tures and heritages. Near the end of the century, rail-roads and territorial land runs brought peoples with awide variety of cultures and customs to OklahomaTerritory. Cities developed in the agrarian environ-ment, and in 1907, Oklahoma joined the UnitedStates as the 46th state.

    OKLAHOMA CULTURE

    Oklahoma celebrates its modern culture, historicalwestern culture and Native American culture throughmuseums, cultural events and historic sites.

    International students in Oklahoma enjoy visiting theNational Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western HeritageMuseum, the Gilcrease Institute of American History,the Philbrook Art Center, the Oklahoma City Mu-seum of Art, Woolaroc Museum and the Will RogersMemorial. Indian City USA in Anadarko displaysauthentic Indian dwellings of various plains tribes.

    Noted historic sites include restored Fort Gibson, theCherokee Village Complex, Spiro Mounds and theWashita Battlefield. Oklahomas numerous parks andwildlife refuges include the Ouachita National Forest,the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and theWichita Mountains and Wildlife Refuge.

    Oklahoma provides regular world-class performingarts events including theatre productions and musicalarts series featuring orchestra, voice, popular music

    and dance performances. Oklahomas lakes, golfcourses, parks and recreation areas are ideal for out-door activity. Sports in Oklahoma abound. Baseball,basketball, American football, soccer, ice hockey,gymnastics and wrestling provide weekly excitementthroughout the state, especially on university cam-puses, where sports are a source of pride and enter-tainment for all students.
