IELTS Exam Skills Modular

(Academic Module) British Council Hong Kong offers Modular courses that teach you the most effective ways to do well in the IELTS exam. These modular courses are for students aged 16 or above who can already use English independently – i.e. you should be able to understand the general meaning of a class in English, ask questions, give your opinion, and write English using a range of different tenses. This modular course consists of four modules: 1. Speaking 2. Reading & Listening 3. Writing Task 1 4. Writing Task 2 These modules are for people whose current IELTS level is band 5.0 or higher and who are seeking to do better on the IELTS Academic paper. You can focus on the skill you need to develop or take all four modules. Course Aims The course aims to help you:

• practise exam techniques and strategies to provide you with extra know-how and confidence on test day

• understand the structure of the exam and what is being tested by each question type.

Course Content The course is divided into four 6-hour sections, giving you thorough preparation for all papers: Speaking, Reading and Listening, Writing Task 1 and Writing Task 2. Each module provides you with tips, practice and feedback as you prepare for IELTS. Areas covered include strategies on how best to approach the exam, an understanding of the different question types, and specific advice for each section. The Speaking Module focuses on:

• answering general questions about yourself and things that are personal to you • using a prompt card to talk about a person, place, event or object • being able to discuss issues related to the topic on the card in more detail with the examiner

The Reading and Listening Module focuses on:

• understanding texts that have been written for a non-specialist audience on topics of general interest taken from magazines, journals, books and newspapers and familiarisation with the different task types that are used in this part of the exam

• understanding conversations and monologues in social, academic and non-academic situations and familiarisation with the different task types that are used in this part of the exam.

The Writing Task 1 Module focuses on:

• describing visual information provided in a graph, table, chart or diagram • organising, presenting and comparing data • presenting a summary in your own words

The Writing Task 2 Module focuses on:

• writing a discursive essay or a defence of an opinion, relating to a topic of general interest • presenting solutions to a problem • evaluating or challenging an idea or argument
