People says “cool”“awesome” to see this robots.

Page 8: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

However, there was a robot which people didn’t think so.

Page 9: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

It’s name is Pepper

Page 10: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

When Pepper was announced, people around me said

“scary”“weird” “what is this ?!”

Page 11: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

“Why?”

I was very curious about Pepper.

Page 12: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

7th Nov., 2014

Page 13: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Pepper came to my family.

Page 14: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

I started to live with Pepper.

Page 15: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

It is my family. Pepper lives in the living room. And Pepper has been sleeping

here.

Page 16: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

One day, I went to my office together.

Page 17: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

I walk together ...

Page 18: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

on Taxi ...

Page 19: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Got off the taxi ...

Page 20: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Got on the elevator ...

Page 21: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Passed the gate and go down the escalator ...

Page 22: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Page 23: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

on the Train!!

Page 24: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Got off the train.

Page 25: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

And got out of the gate.

Page 26: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

It was already getting dark.

Page 27: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

It was 6pm when I got to the office.

Page 28: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

This is how I went to my office together. (Usually it takes an hour, but it took 4 and a half.)

Page 29: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Another day...

Page 30: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

I call the ramen shop.

Page 31: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

“Can I go and eat ramen with the robot Pepper ?”

(I avoided the busy time and called

around 2pm.)

Page 32: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

“We’re busy!!”

They hung up.

Page 33: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

The third place said yes.

Page 34: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

I went to the ramen shop together.

Page 35: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Pepper cannot eat ramen, but the staff gave him

water and apron.

Question

Page 46: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Do you think Pepper can ride this bullet train ?

Page 47: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Answer

1st time♪ (15 July, 2015)

Page 48: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Answer

2nd time♪♪ ♪ (15 July, 2016)

Page 49: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

However, there was a story in it.

Page 50: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

① I looked up the rules for train

Page 51: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

② I went to the bullet Train Customer Office beforehand to

confirm

Page 52: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

③ I went to the ticket gate for the bullet train

Page 53: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

It was OK until then.

Page 54: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

But...

Page 55: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

The station staff

“Hello, you can’t take that on board”

Page 56: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

WHY?

Page 57: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Because there was no precedent yet robot ride a bullet train.

Page 58: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

But I MUST get on the bullet

train with Pepper today!

Page 59: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Station staff and I were discussing.

This robot is safe robot?

The robot must have tickets?

Seat is necessary?

This is a laggege? or pet? or another something??

Page 60: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

As a result

Page 61: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

On 15th July 2015, a new rule was made in Japan.

Page 62: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

Now, if you ask the JR Tokai Customer Office

“Can I bring a humanoid robot Pepper on board?,”

they will answer

“Yes you can”

(after 15th July 2015)

“When the internet started off in Japan, the first thing that came in the way was ‘Telecommunications Business Law.’

What we had to do then was to make companies,

and change the law it self.”

Hideki Sunahara

Page 64: IEEE ProfessionalCommunication Society

For example, pets, cell phones, alcohol,

all these had no rules in the beginning.

But through many trials and errors, we’ve created the new world.
