From the Editor
This edition will be the last publication for 2016. This
edition features a lot of new events that took place in
October through December 2016. This 27-page
newsletter features activity reports from Malaysia section
officers (excomm), Sarawak subsection, 14
chapters/affinity groups and 4 student branches. This
report also features the publication of the 30th
anniversary commemoration book, As usual, this fourth
quarter has also been very busy for Malaysia section.

IEEE Sarawak Subsection

IEEE Sarawak Technically Co-sponsored Young
Innovate Sarawak
Young Innovate (YI) is an annual program to catalyse
maker movement in secondary schools through an
embedded system design national competition.
This year the program in Sarawak was held at Swinburne
University of Technology Sarawak Campus on 15 Oct
2016 with 16 schools and total 174 students participated.
YI is considered to be an important initiative to boost
school children’s STEM awareness and uptake rate.
IEEE Sarawak was actively involved in this program. Dr
Jacey Lynn Minoi, Ir Dr David Bong Boon Liang and Dr
Pan Zheng from IEEE Sarawak played the role of judges
and provided feedback, suggestions and ideas to the
teams who would represent Sarawak to compete in
national level in Kuala Lumpur later.
By participating in external community programs and
activities, IEEE Sarawak enhanced the reputation of IEEE
and improved the cognizance of the IEEE brand in the
region.
Invited Industrial Talk on Power Quality
Organized by IEEE Sarawak
Besides community focus, IEEE Sarawak also works on
industrial linkages and explores the opportunities
where the industry experts benefit the community. On
18 Oct 2016, an invited industry talk on power quality
is organized with effort from our Excomm member Mr.
Victor Wong. A pioneer in power quality industry,
Terence Chandler, is invited to deliver the talk. Mr
Chandler who has more than 30 years of power quality
engineering, training and management experiences is
the founder and the director of Power Quality Asia and
currently he is also managing the Asian operations for
Dranetz-BMI- Electrotek.
Students and academics from UNIMAS and Swinburne
attended this interesting talk.

IEEE Day 2016 Celebration
IEEE Day is a worldwide event where members
celebrate all things IEEE. Every year, it is celebrated
concurrently by sections and chapters throughout the
world, from US, South America, Africa, Asia-Pacific and
more. Information on the event can be found at
ieeeday.org. The event comprised of insightful talks by
notable IEEE Malaysia volunteers. Dr Pauzi Abdullah
introduced everyone to IEEE as a society and its benefits,
while Dr Anang Hudaya Mohd Amin talked about the
activities conducted by IEEE Young Professionals
Malaysia. This was followed by Dr Zaid Omar who
shared his interesting experience participating in the
Region 10 Congress in Bangalore, India.
Finally, Mr. Hussain Mahdi gave a talk about his long-
standing involvement with IEEE. The highlight of the
event was the cake-cutting session, where participants
were treated to an IEEE Day-themed cake and other
refreshments. Overall, the program was deemed a
success and we look forward to celebrating IEEE Day
again in 2017!

2016 is a year to remember for IEEE YP Malaysia when
one of our committees; Mr. Hussein Mahdi has been
awarded with this prestigious award from the IEEE
Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Board.
Quoting the letter on the award recipient; ”This is a very
prestigious award, and we are pleased to honor you for
the outstanding contributions you have made to
numerous IEEE activities and the example you set in
carrying forward the goals and objectives of the IEEE
MGA Board”. Mr. Mahdi received this award for

IEEEYoung Professional (YP) Malaysia Meet Up
The IEEE Young Professionals (YP) Malaysia has
organized a meetup session during the 2016 IEEE
Malaysia Student Congress on 20th of October 2016.
The event was successfully held at Asia-Pacific
University (APU), Bukit Jalil, Selangor. The meetup
session comprises two main sharing sessions
conducted by Mr. Simon Yeoh and Dr. Mohd Hanif
Yaacob. Mr. Simon shared his experiences on IEEE
entrepreneurship initiatives and Dr. Mohd Hanif
inspired IEEE YP members on his experiences as the
founder and the first chair of IEEE Graduate of the
Last Decade (GOLD) affinity group in 2005.
Mr. Simon shared the IEEE entrepreneurship initiative, in
which YP Malaysia has been selected as a pilot. Dr. Mohd
Hanif Yaacob shared his experience winning the
prestigious global award from IEEE on YP activities
during his time as Chair for IEEE YP Malaysia.

IEEE YP National Technical Poster Competition
2016
IEEE YP Malaysia has successfully organized the IEEE YP
National Technical Poster Competition 2016.This
competition was held via online submission, which was
opened to all IEEE and non-IEEE members, since August
2016. There are about 40 submissions received for four
different categories; Undergraduate Engineering,
Undergraduate IT, Postgraduate Engineering and
Postgraduate IT. The prize-giving ceremony for this
competition was held during the IEEE SCOReD 2016
conference on 13th of December 2016, at Berjaya
Times Square Hotel.

IEEE CPMT Malaysia Best Final Year Project (FYP)
Undergraduate Prizes 2016
Dr. Siow Kim Shyong from National University of
Malaysia was the Project Manager for this program
which is targeted to encourage greater awareness
amongst students of career opportunities in
microelectronics components, packaging and
manufacturing technology as well as motivate them to
excel in it. Winners will receive RM500 cash and a
book valued at RM300 donated to their respective
university by Rolf Aschenbrenner (Fraunhoffer IZM).
For 2016, 3 students won Best FYP Undergraduate
Prizes. They were Mah Chee Weng from University of
Nottingham Malaysia Campus with the topic “Modeling
of an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion System”;
Norhafifah Binti Zainal Azlin from University Malaysia
Perlis with the topic “The Effect of Thermal Aging on

IEEE-CPMT IMPACT Taiwan Conference (Taipei,
26th to 28th Oct)
International Microsystems, Packaging, Assembly and
Circuit Technology (IMPACT) is a joint international
conference consisting of IMAPS All Asia Conference
(IAAC) organized by IEEE CPMT-Taipei, iMAPS-Taiwan,
ITRI and TPCA. IEEE M’sia CPMT chapter was honored
with multiple submissions in both Invited Papers and
Oral Presentations categories. CPMT M’sia was
represented by Shaw Fong Wong (from Intel
Technology) to deliver 2 invited papers entitled ”Trends
and Opportunity in Malaysia IoV” and “Packaging as IP
Differentiator”. The other 5 orals presentations were
presented by M’sia delegates, from Altera-Intel, Jabil and
Freescale-NXP. The overall successful IMPACT
conference had became a vortex of valuable resource
under various APAC region CPMT chapters’
contribution and participation; a hallmark of strong
collaboration forum between CPMT M’sia and Taipei on
continuous technical sharing and development.

Renewable Energy Demonstration in SUKRA
Family Day 2016
IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (DEIS)
Malaysia Chapter has participated in 2016 Sunway
Kayangan Resident Association (SUKRA) Family Day
on 19th November 2016 through “Renewable Energy
Demonstration” activity. The demonstration was also
supported by the University of Malaya Power Energy
Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC). The
demonstration was led by Dr. Hazlee Azil Illias, an
academic staff from the University of Malaya.
The objectives of the demonstration are:
To create awareness among the community on
the importance of renewable energy
To disseminate basic information on renewable
energy and its latest updates to the community
To demonstrate renewable energy process to the
community, particularly for wind and solar energy
During the event, Dr. Hazlee and his team
demonstrated and explained how electricity can be
generated from wind and solar energy to the
community. The demonstration received
overwhelming response from the community,
especially residents of Sunway Kayangan, Shah Alam.
IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter hopes that similar
demonstration can be organized again in future
community events in Malaysia.
In conjunction with the 6th IEEE International
Conference on Power and Energy (PECON) on 28th and
29th November 2016 at Hatten Hotel, Malacca, IEEE
Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS)
Malaysia Chapter has set up a promotion booth of DEIS
as part of its membership drive activity. The booth was
handled by two IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter committee
members, Dr. Lau Kwan Yiew and Dr. Hidayat
Zainuddin.
The main objectives of the booth were to bring
awareness to the public on the presence of the recently
established IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter, especially to the
conference participants, and to promote activities related
to DEIS.
IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter was established in Malaysia in
May 2015 with the aims to enhance networking and
stimulate research and development in the field of
dielectrics and electrical insulation in Malaysia. Its field of
interest is in line with that of DEIS, i.e., the study and
application of dielectric phenomena and behavior and the
development, characterization and application of all
gaseous, liquid and solid electrical insulating materials and
systems utilized in electrical and electronic equipment.
IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter hopes to promote the close
cooperation and exchange of technical information
among its members.

IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter Meeting
The 9th , 10th and 11th committee meeting for IEEE
OES Malaysia Chapter was held on the 6th Oct 2016,
28th Oct 2016 and 12th Dec 2016, respectively. The
meeting main agenda was on preparation for the 2016
IEEE USYS conference which was first time to be
organized by the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter. Each
portfolio was given task list as to assure the smooth
running of the conference. During the 9th meeting, the
committees were also informed on the adjournment of
National Technical Seminar on Underwater System
Technology to next year. The meetings were also
concluded on IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter account
which was officially opened and issue related to finance
such as GST and process of making a claim was
explained to all the committees.
2016 IEEE 6th International Conference on
Underwater System Technology: Theory &
Applications (USYS’16)
The 2016 IEEE 6th International Conference on
Underwater System Technology: Theory &
Applications was successfully organized on the 13th to
14th December 2016 at the Toray-USM Knowledge
Transfer Centre, USM Pulau Pinang. The conference
was organized by the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter,
technically joint by the Malaysia Society of Automatic
Control (MACE) and hosted by the Universiti Sains
Malaysia (USM).
With theme “Go Deeper, Reach Further” USYS’16
marked significant achievement to the chapter since
this is the first time that the conference was organized
by the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter and also first time
for the conference to be registered under the IEEE.
One thing unique about the conference was that the
organizing committees come from different institutions.
Each portfolio had committees from different
university. The spirit of team work, cooperative
coordination and positive commitment has led to the
successful conduct of the event.
During the 2 days conference, 4 keynote speeches
were delivered and 41 technical papers were
presented. Aside from keynote and technical sessions,
the conference also had exhibitions on ROV and UAV
platforms which were developed by researchers from
various institutions. 3 best paper awards were also
prepared and given to authors of which their technical
papers and presentation had been chosen by the
judging panels as winners. The next 2018 USYS is
planned to be organized in Wuhan, China.

GENERIC Program
DL by IEEE EDS Vice President
The IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Malaysia
Chapter with the collaboration with IEEE EDS UKM
Student Branch Chapter have successfully organized
the Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Talk by Prof. Dr.
M.K. Radhakrishnan on 07th November 2016. The
event was co-organized with the Institute of
Microengineering and Nanoelectronic (IMEN), UKM.
Prof. Radhakrishnan is the IEEE EDS Vice-President of
Regions & Chapters and a Member of Board of
Governors of IEEE Electron Devices Society. He is an
lEEE EDS Distinguished Lecturer from 1997, has
presented his research work entitled: Electrostatic
discharge (ESD) Issues and Challenges in Si
Nanometer Devices. There were about 28 audiences
comprised of staffs from UKM, as well as
postgraduate students from IMEN.
On 26th- 28th of September 201, the Kulliyyah of
Engineering, UIA had held an event called ENGITEX. In
this event, the IEEE- EDS Malaysia Chapter has the
opportunity to co-organize a sub-event of ENGITEX
known as GENERIC. GENERIC is program which
involved that participation from primary and secondary
school to inculcate interest in Science Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). There were 45
students participants from primary schools and 33
students from secondary schools around Kuala Lumpur.
The program was divided into two parts; Generation of
Engineers for primary school and Eco Race Challenge for
secondary school. Participants are required to answer
some questions regarding the experiments using EDS-
ETC kits conducted in the Eco Race Challenge.
Technical Talk by Ir Cheang Kok Meng
The IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Malaysia
Chapter with the collaboration with IEEE EDS UKM
Student Branch Chapter have successfully organized
the technical talk by Ir Cheang Kok Meng on the 9th
of December 2016. He is now a visiting lecturer in
several universities where he talks on Engineering
Ethics, Technology & Society, Professional
Development and Broadcast Systems. His
presentation entitled: The Thin Line between Right
and Wrong-Ethics in Engineering. The event was co-
organized by Pusat Citra, UKM. There were about
16 audiences consists of staffs, postgraduate and
undergraduate students from UKM.

TREES 2016 by IEEE PES Malaysia Chapter
IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Malaysia Chapter in collaboration with the Solar Group Universiti Putra
Malaysia (UPM), The Electrical and Electronics Association of Malaysia (TEEAM) and the Young Scientist
Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) have successfully organized a one-day workshop called
Transfer Renewable Energy & Electrical Safety (TREES) on 27th October 2016.
TREES is an educational outreach project with the purpose of promoting and educating school children from age
13-15 on the fundamental theory of power engineering as well as on solar system development. Outcome of this
workshop include a group’s mini project on solar system development and installation and also provide
awareness on electrical safety aspects. TREES received fund of USD5000 under the IEEE PES Member Driven
Initiatives campaign.
This event also served as a platform for IEEE PES Malaysia members to interact with the students and instil the
important role they can play in shaping the future of the nation.
The event commenced with a talk on the Importance of STEM and the Electric Safety, delivered by Associate
Professor Dr Samsul Bahari Mohd Noor (UPM) and Professor Dr M. Iqbal Saripan (YSN-ASM Representative),
respectively in the morning session. Before they were dismissed for their afternoon break, another one-hour
session on the Electrical Safety Demonstration was conducted by the TEEAM personnel. The students showed
very good response as this was a new experience for some of them. In the afternoon, a total of 67 students
were grouped into 15 groups and led by one Facilitator. They were given briefing on the Solar PV system
development before they were assign a task to complete the simple installation.

Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society (SMC)

Robotic Workshop at Manipal International University
IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC) Malaysia and
Manipal International University (MIU) have jointly
organized a robotic workshop at MIU Campus in Nilai,
Negeri Sembilan on 7th of December 2016. The robotic
workshop was conducted by the IEEE SMC Malaysia
Chair, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khairul Salleh Bin Mohamed
Sahari and his team from Universiti Tenaga Nasional
(UNITEN). Participants of the workshop are mostly
students from MIU.

During this workshop, the participants are exposed to
the knowledge and skills related to the field of robotics.
Participants are also been given a hands-on training on
developing a small-scale robotic module.

Humanitarian and Social Program: Reaching out to
Community in Flood Prone Areas
On November 20, 2016, ComSoc/VTS, together with
Persatuan Mahasiswa Kejuruteraan (PEMAJU) Universiti
Putra Malaysia, IEEE Malaysia Signal Processing (SP)
Society, and representatives of UKM have visited Sekolah
Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kuala Krai, Kelantan. The
main objective of this visit/program is to create
awareness among students and understanding of
responsibility to build intellectual society. In addition, the
program also promotes the importance of radio
communication during disaster and also knowledge
sharing session on how to stay connected during severe
flood notably when all the communications were
disconnected.
The team departed from Serdang on the midnight of
November 19, 2016 by UPM bus, and arrived in Kuala
Krai around 5am on the next day. We went to SMK
Kuala Krai at 8am and greeted by the school teachers
and 200 Form 4 students of SMK Kuala Krai. The
program started with the introduction to IEEE,
ComSoc/VTS and SP by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aduwati Sali,
followed by amateur radio demonstration and talk by
Prof. Dr. Mahamod Ismail. The 200 students were then
divided into 3 smaller groups. They were exposed to
various activities related to science and technologies, and
communication such as a competition to build and design
an antenna using straw. In addition, there were several
games being played such as Laser Maze and Light Box.
The students were also introduced with the basic
concept of electrical design. The group sessions were
carried out for 3 hours, and groups that scored the
highest points in the activities were given special prizes by
ComSoc/VTS.

2016 ComSoc Chapter of the Year
Dr Fazirulhisyam Hashim has attended the IEEE
Globecom 2016 from December 4-8, 2016 at Hilton
Hotel, Washington DC. He also represented IEEE
Malaysia ComSoc/VTS for receiving the 2016 ComSoc

ceremony on December 5, 2016. Moreover,
ComSoc/VTS also won the 2016 ComSoc Chapter
Achievement Award (Asia Pacific). The year 2016 has
been an exhilarating year for ComSoc/VTS, as we were
also the current winner of VTS Chapter of the Year
award. As the winner of 2016 ComSoc Chapter of the
Year, Dr. Fazirul was invited to deliver several talks and
sharing sessions during the conference. One of the
talks were during the Asia Pacific Board Meeting, which
was attended by the Chairs and representatives of
respective ComSoc chapters in Asia Pacific region.
This is indeed a great honour to the Chapter where
the recipe of success stems from the selfless
commitment of successive groups of Executive
Committees and above all the great support and
cooperation by the members.

2016 IEEE Asia-Pacific Conference on Applied Electromagnetics (APACE 2016)
The 7th IEEE Asia-Pacific Conference on Applied
Electromagnetics (APACE 2016) has been successfully
conducted. This year the event was held at ADYA
Hotel, Langkawi, Malaysia, from December 11 to
December 13, 2016. In brief, total of 128 papers have
been submitted and it involved more than 100 reviewers
coming from more than 10 countries. The average of an
acceptance ratio of the paper is about 75.6%, which
contribute to 87 papers have been accepted for the
presentation at APACE 2016. From these numbers,
about 65% of authors are from Malaysia and the balance
are coming from Japan, UK, India, Middle East Countries,
Australia and New Zealand. All of the registered, paid
and presented papers will be published in IEEE Xplore,
which is indexed by SCOPUS-Elsevier.
For the year 2016, the IEEE APMTTEMC Joint Chapter
was delighted to have three keynote speakers who are
Prof. Hiroyuki Arai, from Yokohama National University,
Japan, presented about ‘Smart Suit for Body Area
Network’; Prof. Mohamad Kamal A Rahim from
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia presented about ‘Frequency
Reconfigurable Antenna for Wireless Communication
System’ and Dr Imadun Rahman from Ericsson Research
Sweeden presented about 5G Overview and Challenges.

The event was also brightened up by the two tutorial
speaker, Prof Mohammad Zarar Mohd Jenu from
Universiti Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn presented about

and Design Considerations and Prof Yoshihide Yamada
from Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology
presented about Antenna Designing Methods by
MATLAB Software. This year, the event was also
enlighten to welcome 17 Invited Speakers who are
coming from various disciplines of field and experts. The
peak of the event is the Networking Dinner who attract
more than 60 participants to come.

Photonics Lecture Series (PLS)
This forum aims to provide opportunities for every
representatives from every country to share
experiences, methods, strategies and discussion about
the development of photonics in their respective
countries. This is in line with IPS mission statement, to
establish and maintain IPS as the global leader for
professional member development and societal
engagement in the fields of lasers, optoelectronics,
and photonics. The forum was chaired by the Vice
President of the IEEE Photonics Society, Dr. Paul
Juodawlkis.
A series of Photonics Lectures have been organized
throughout year 2016. The aims of PLS is to share
knowledge and networking with all IPS members in
Malaysia. The lectures are given by our enthusiasm and
energetics from young academicians.

UNITEN organized the PLS on 4 November 2016 by
inviting Dr Raja Zahilah Raja Mohd Radzi from Universiti

Raja shared her expert on Programmable Network
whereas Mr Kannan presented “Practical Usage of

SPS Winter School 2016
The IEEE SPS Malaysia Chapter has organized the2016/2017 Winter School on Recent Advances inBiomedical Imaging, which was held at UTM KL from 7-11 November 2016. The school was part of theSeasonal School Series sponsored by IEEE SignalProcessing Society worldwide, featuring a mix of localand international speakers.The 5-day program covers all aspects of biomedicalimaging, from basic topics such as PACS/DICOM, imageregistration, structural imaging, functional imaging and3D modeling, to advanced topics such as fusionimaging, digital pathology, image-guided procedures,deep learning and big data in biomedical imaging. Foreach topic, recent advances within their domain werethe main focus.Besides the regular lecture session, there were alsodedicated session to meet local radiologists, a postersession for participants to showcase their current work,a forum among the speakers to discuss a particulartopic of interests, a visit to the National Heart Instituteof Malaysia (NHI) and last but not least, a session onhow to write a good biomedical imaging article.The Winter School was a success event. The committeewould like to thank all the speakers, NHI, the posterpresenters, the participants and all those who made itsuch a fruitful and beneficial experience. We hope toconduct similar schools in the future, and wish to getcontinuous support from IEEE SPS.

The 2016 IEEE Conferences (ICOS, ICWiSe and
IC3e)
IEEE Computer Society Malaysia has recently
organized three joint conferences from 10 to 12 October
2016 at Holiday Villa Beach and Spa, Langkawi Island. The
three conferences are held annually to welcome
researches and technology practitioners from all over the
world to share on current industrial and academic status.
Besides, the conferences also aimed to encourage more
IEEE members to publish their work whilst at the same
time attracting more people to be IEEE members to
participate in similar conferences annually with given
privileges. The three conferences namely IEEE
Conference on Open Systems (ICOS 2016), IEEE
Conference on Wireless Sensors (ICWiSe 2016) and
IEEE Conference on e-Learning, e-Management and e-
Services (IC3e 2016) has successfully bring together 76
presenters from more than twenty countries this year.
19 presenters published their work in ICWiSe 2016, 22
presenters published in ICOS 2016 and 35 presenters
published in IC3e 2016 respectively. Works presented in
ICOS 2016 includes tracks such as open systems and
technologies. software engineering and tools, open
systems applications, security, open systems in public
sector, standards and infrastructure, business, licensing
and legal issues just to name a few. ICWiSe 2016 on the
other hand includes article from tracks such as sensor
networks software and architectures, wireless
information networks, hardware, data manipulation,
signal processing, obstacles, simulations, applications and
uses. As for IC3e, it includes tracks such as e-learning,
technologies and platform, emerging hardware and
software for e-learning, infrastructure and portals,
authoring and content management tools, developing
The conference invites two prominent keynote
speakers this year round. The first keynote speech was
delivered by Professor Dr. Zaidatun Tasir from
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in the related field
of e-learning courseware. The second keynote speech
was delivered by Mr. Marcos Bonfim de Azevedo from
Schlumberger on data analytics in current era. Both
keynotes were much enlightening discussing on current
issues, challenges and technology advancement. The
conferences also organized a beach front dinner
attended by all participants on the second night of the
conference. Several Best Paper awards have also been
presented to a few most prominent authors from
respective categories and conferences. Overall, the
2016 IEEE conferences have been a successful and
memorable one. It is hoped that these conferences will

IEEE Workshop on Geoscience and Remote Sensing 2016 (IWGRS2016)
This workshop provides participants the opportunity
to learn the basics of airborne laser scanning (ALS)
data processing in ArcGIS software with some
practical applications. It is our belief that the scope
of this year’s workshop will provide an interesting
technical program which will further enhance our
knowledge on sustainable environmental and
resource management. You are all cordially invite to
join the workshops on ALS data processing, keynote
speeches, and paper presentation.
The IEEE Workshop on Geoscience and Remote
Sensing 2016 (IWGRS2016) has been successfully
conducted. This year the event was held at Faculty of
Engineering Auditorium, UPM on 8-9th November
2016. The IWGRS is our yearly event, aimed at
providing a forum for IEEE GRSS members to share
knowledge and experience on recent development and
advancement in geosciences and remote sensing
technologies, particularly in the context of earth
observation, disaster monitoring and risk assessment
for sustainable development. This year, the IWGRS
consists of a distinguished keynote lecture by
international expert, 20 full papers, and a practical
workshop on LiDAR technology.

For the year 2016, the IEEE GRSS was delighted to
have Keynote Lecture by Mr Atsushi Murakami, Japan.
The title of the keynote lecture is “Trend of Earth
Observation Satellite and Launch Vehicle for Small
Satellite”. Mr Atsushi presented the current trend of
small satellite, especially for the earth observation
satellite. The program started with a welcoming
remark given by Assoc. Prof. Ir Dr. Raizal Saifulnaz
Muhammad Rashid from UPM, the Head of department

IEEE CAS BioPro 2016: Asia-Pacific Winter School
on Bio-inspired Systems and Prosthetic Devices in
Seri Iskandar, Malaysia
Asia-Pacific Winter School on Bio-inspired Systems and
Prosthetic Devices (BioPro) 2016 is considered as
analogous to the annual cognitive neuromorphic
workshops in Telluride for the US region and in Capo
Caccia for the European region. The ultimate goal of the
annual Asia-Pacific Seasonal School is promoting the
applications of bio-inspired systems to real industrial or
medical problems. BioPro has been held in Taiwan from
2009 to 2015, with the support from IEEE Circuits and
Systems Society under Outreach Initiative. This year
BioPro was organized by IEEE Circuits and Systems
Society (Malaysia Chapter) as one of the IEEE Seasonal
Schools in Circuits and Systems, in collaboration with
Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering,
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and National
Tsing Hua University (NTHU). The hosts are Tong Boon
Tang (UTP) and Hsin Chen (NTHU). The winter school
received a total of 52 registered participants comprising
both local and foreign nationalities (Fig.1). Besides the
keynote lectures by eight invited speakers, we had a
special session on microfluidic technology and
applications with an additional six speakers from local
universities to share their research projects and
outcomes. The winter school further provided a demo
session of brain controlled game and robot, a hands on
project for practicing the knowledge from the lectures,
and a brainstorming day tour to Cameron Highlands on
7th December for all the participants to have close
interaction with speakers to discuss innovative ideas and
future collaborations. The winter school featured
speakers from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and
Malaysia.
The next stop BioPro 2017 will be in Singapore, and
the BioPro 2018 in Australia.

The IEEE CAS Joint Seminar - French - Shikoku –
Malaysia was conducted on 19th Dec 2016 at Universiti
Putra Malaysia with three speakers. Amara Amara from
CAS France gave a talk on Extremely Low-Leakage
Memory and Logic Circuits Based on Tunneling FET
Devices while Yoshifumi Nishio from CAS Shikoku
Japan gave a talk on Complex Phenomena in Coupled
Chaotic Circuits. The seminar ended with the talk on
Towards Energy-Efficient On-Chip Communication
given by Fakhrul Zaman Rokhani from Malaysia. The
event was attended by 20 participants.
The IEEE CAS invited talk on CAS Conferences and
Activities has been successfully conducted on 20th Dec
2016 at The Everly Hotel Putrajaya. Amara Amara the
VP for CAS conference gave a talk on Dedicated To
Your Success - IEEE CAS Conferences and Yoshifumi
Nishio the BoG of CAS delivered a talk on Make the
Members’ Connection - IEEE CASS Activities. Twenty
participants attended. The event reached its point with
unforeseen numbers of questions and answers which
could then clarify the importance of the contents
delivered.

2016 IEEE Malaysia Student Congress
IEEE Malaysia Section organized the 4th IEEE Malaysia
Section Student Congress on 15th October 2016 at Asia
Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU),
Kuala Lumpur. The event was co-sponsored by IEEE
Region 10 Student Activity Committee and was co-
organized together with the IEEE APU Student Branch
which was headed by Dr Ehsan and Dr Manoj.
The event was inaugurated by Prof. Ron Edwards, Vice
Chancellor of APU, Dr Zuhaina Zakaria, Chair, IEEE
Malaysia Section and Dr P. Susthitha Menon, Student
Activity Chair, IEEE Malaysia Section. There were a few
keynote speeches delivered in the Congress including
“IEEE Malaysia Section YP Overview” by Dr. Anang
Hudaya, YP Malaysia Chair, ”IEEE Malaysia Section WIE
Overview & WIE Student Network Soft Launch” by
Saaveethya, R10 WIE, “IEEE Individual Benefits and

The award ceremony for the 3rd IEEE Malaysia Section
Online Final Year Project (FYP) Competition was during
the congress. 33 winners from 13 technical tracks
received cash prizes, plaques and certificates from
technical chapter representatives. The winning posters
were exhibited during the morning coffee break.

Gomes and Ali Najah, “Grab the Prize”; a written quiz
competition about IEEE was conducted by Jeff Kong
where the top 20 winners received gifts and prizes.
Saaveethya (WIE) and Yoeh Hong Boon (YP) executed
the IEEE Collabratec Session where the IEEE Malaysia
Community Collabratec Soft Launch was done. Several
prizes sponsored by IEEE Collabratec USA were given
away to participants for the various activities. The
winners of the Collabratec SB Contest were UITM SB
(1st) and Curtin SB (2nd). Winners of the Infographics
Competition are USM SB (1st), UKM SB (2nd) and Curtin
SB (3rd). An award ceremony was also held to recognize
the R10/MGA award winners. Finally, the winners for the
Exemplary Student Branch were MMU SB (1st), UTM SB
(2nd) and Curtin SB (3rd). The R10 SYLC Congress
attendees from Malaysia Section were also recognized
for their efforts in winning the Best Cultural Exhibition
Booth during the congress in Bangalore. They are P

In the evening, Student Activities, YP and WIE had their
respective parallel sessions to emulate the R10 congress.

IEEE Malaysia Section organized a membership drive at
Universiti Malaya on the 21st October 2016. A total of 25
participants attended the talk entitled “Benefits of
becoming an IEEE Student Member” delivered by Dr P
Susthitha Menon (SAC Chair – Malaysia). SSR Ashen
Gomes also gave his overview on the advantages of being
an IEEE student member. Finally the UM SB Chair, Farid
encouraged all participants to be IEEE members.

The IEEEXtreme Programming Competition was
executed worldwide on 22nd October 2016. IEEEXtreme
is a global challenge in which teams of IEEE Student
members—advised and proctored by an IEEE member,
and often supported by an IEEE Student Branch—
compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to
solve a set of programming problems. A total of 35
teams from the various universities and student branches
in Malaysia Section participated in this competition. IEEE
Malaysia Section sponsored meals worth RM25/student
for each participating student. The top three teams from
Malaysia are from Swinburne University (ranked 279
worldwide), Nottingham University (ranked 573) and
USM SB (ranked 759).

The 14th IEEE Student Conference on Research &
Development (SCOReD2016) was successfully organized
by IEEE Malaysia Section and IEEE International Islamic
University Malaysia (IIUM) Student Branch from 13-14
December 2016 at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel Kuala
Lumpur. The conference was chaired by Dr Zuhaina
Zakaria, Chair of IEEE Malaysia Section. IIUM SB was led
by Dr Musse and Dr Sheroz Khan.
IEEE SCOReD 2016 focusses on the findings from
research students, post-doc fellows and research
associates in the institutions of higher learning pursuing
research degrees. Beside the main fields of electronics,
electrical, and communication engineering, SCOReD
covers other fields related to biosensing, materials,
renewable energy, professional engineering ethics, and
mechatronics. The IEEE Malaysia Section has transformed
it into an event that is going beyond the borders of Asia
Pacific Region.
The first keynote speaker of the conference was Prof Md
Moinul Hossain from University of Kent with his Skype-

based talk entitled “Recent Advances in Electrostatic
Sensors and Instruments for Industrial Measurement and
Monitoring”.
The second keynote speaker was Prof Mahamod Ismail
from UKM with his talk entitled “Mitigating Inter-cell
Interference in 5G Ultra-dense Femtocell Networks:
Issues and Challenges”. A total of 71 papers categorized
into 10 technical tracks and hailing from 15 different
countries were presented at the conference. Other
highlights during the conference were the launching of
the Student Activities Video Montage, IEEE Membership
Talk & Booth and the Young Professionals National
Technical Poster Exhibition & Award Ceremony.
SCORED2016 Best Paper Award Winner was Ms
Kiasatina from USM with her paper entitled
“Construction of Partial Discharge Measurement System
Under Influence of Cylindrical Metal Particle in
Transformer Oil”. Meanwhile the Best Student Presenter
Award Winner was Samuel Jia Wei Tang from Monash
University with his paper entitled “Closed-loop Color
Control of an RGB Luminaire Using Sensors Onboard a
Mobile Computing System”

Diploma in AutoCAD
Multimedia university IEEE Student Branch conducted two full courses
of AutoCAD where participants received Diploma in AutoCAD
certification from eduCAD (Autodesk Educational Partner). First
session was carried out on 20th to 24th of October and second
session was conducted on 5 full days, the weekends from 16th to 25th
of December. Mr. B. Varun Nair, a certified professional in Autodesk
trained and introduced participant to AutoCAD and the basics of 2D
and 3D designing. Students mastered the skills through workshops
and various projects. Furthermore, participants experimented with
environmental and sun effects, as well as material rendering. A total of
25 individuals attended the courses.

A Freescale training workshop was carried out for
engineering students by IEEE MMU Student Branch on
16th of December. Learning Freescale is important for
electrical and electronics engineer students as they can
utilize the device in various projects such as IoT. 40
students were trained by Dr. Tan Wooi, a senior
Multimedia University lecturer. Participants were
awarded a certificate of participation from IEEE MMU
Student Branch.

Technical Visit (Measat)
In order to deliver better understanding of satellite
communications, IEEE MMU Student Branch organized a site visit
to MEASAT Teleport and Broadcast Centre, Cyberjaya on 7th
October 2016. A total of 20 Multimedia University students
participated in this trip. MEASAT staffs gave participants a tour of
the facilities and explained technical details during the visit.
Students had the opportunity to observe the three main
departments, namely satellite controlling department, Network
department and antennas farm.

Writing Grant Proposal for Young Researchers
MMU IEEE Student Branch with collaboration IEEE comsoc organized
a full-day workshop on writing grant proposal for young researchers
on 6th November 2016. The speaker Dr. Mardeni gave a motivation
points that improve the skills of writing grant proposal with high level
of acceptance. The workshop was conducted at faculty of engineering,
MMU and it was very popular and well received with more than 30
individuals attending with diverse backgrounds.

Workshop on Satellite Communication
In alliance with APSEC 2016, IEEE MMU Student Branch co-organized
a workshop on satellite communication in Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia, on 6th of October. Steamed speakers lectured participants
on a variety of satellite communications like: Applications,
Regulations, Industry overview and Career in Space. Furthermore,
participants were presented with few case studies to solidify their
understanding of satellite communication.

On December 24th, the committee carried out a full day workshop on
Mobile Android Development in an attempt to familiarize participants
with the fundamentals of mobile software development. As many as
30 students were partaking in the workshop where they learnt how
to set-up Android Studio as well as other necessary software like JDK
and SDK. During the full day workshop, participants were walked
through making their very first android app.

Technical Visit to Proton
To familiarize students with advance workplaces, IEEE MMU Student Branch facilitated a technical visit to Proton
factory in Shah Alam. 12 participants had a tour in one of the most praised companies of Malaysia, while technicians
elaborated various mechanism of the production line and the company.

IEEE APU Student Branch

Industrial Visit to Public Bank
On 21-Oct-2016, students from “Banking and Finance”
and “Computing” participated in a industrial visit to
Public Bank in conjunction with 50th Anniversary
celebration. APU IEEE Student Branch organized the
trip with two lecturers; Rozitaayu Binti Zulkifli and
Manoj Jayabalan.

The visit gave a brief introduction to Public Bank history
and achievements over the years. Students had a
prospect to attend the exhibition and visited the Head
Quarters operation in action. Mr. Ryan Ong from
Human Capital Management presented the careers and
internship opportunities in the banking sector. He
added the different positions available in sales and non-
sales teams along with the different benefits offered to
their employees.
Mr. Sooym is the Head of IT department, provided
insights of the IT facilities, banking operations and the
level of data protection from natural disaster. He gave
the students with valuable information on IT career
paths in the banking sector and the different
applications built and maintained in-house.

Community service for Down Syndrome Children
School
APU IEEE Student Branch had a fascinating event to
conclude a productive year.
Volunteers from the APU IEEE Student Branch
participated in a community service in the cleaning and
painting of the new premise for Down Syndrome
Children’s School, Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK
Kiu) on 11th December 2016.
Thank you Volunteers for the wonderful job. You are
an inspiration to all!

Official Formation of IEEE UTeM Student Branch
Participation in Blood Donation Carnival
Many of our members took part
in a Blood Donation Carnival in
which is jointly co-organized by
UTeM, Infineon and Malacca
Blood Bank held on 7th of
December 2016. Despite their
busy schedules, our members
managed to carry out their
responsibility to contribute back
to the society through this event.

The formation of IEEE
UTeM Student Branch was
pre-conceived as a result
from an insightful IEEE
membership workshop held
in Canselori Auditorium,
UTeMUTeM back in March 2016. The notion for establishment
was push forward and received approval from R10 SAC
by June 2016. However, it was until early October 2016,
our team has finally established officially as a student club
in UTeM. Currently, our formation of IEEE UTeM
Student Branch is established under the roof of Electrical
Engineering Faculty (FKE), UTeM with the endorsement
from Dr. Ir. Nazri Othman as the Dean of FKE and
support from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chong Shin Horng as IEEE
UTeM Student Branch Counselor.
Our team has been very fortunate to be offered a chance
to establish our presence by having a booth at the 2016
IEEE 6th International Conference on Power and Energy
(PECON 2016) held at Hatten Hotel, Malacca from 28th
to 29th of November 2016 and Distinguished Lecture
Program on 30th of November 2016 held at Auditorium
Canselori, UTeM. With the golden opportunity, we were
able to provide a platform for UTeM community to get to
know more about IEEE as a professional body. Also, our
teams also have obtained many returns from the
informative keynote and DLP speeches given by Prof. Dr.
-Ing. Ralph Kennel and Prof. Dr. -Ing. Hugh Rudnick. As
Prof. Dr. -Ing Hugh Rudnick was previously a student
branch counselor, we manage to close up a short and
casual session of information sharing in which Prof. Dr. -
Ing Hugh Rudnick offered us some on his humble tips for
student branch for growth and future development.

out to IEEE UTeM Student Branch from the organizing
committee for proactive participation throughout the
carnival. The token of appreciation was received by our
interim president and presented in the form of
monetary reward of RM 300. The monetary reward
would be utilized for our upcoming events and
workshops. Lastly, the blood donation carnival ends on
a high note by registering the highest record in Malacca
in which 755 bags of blood were collected. We look
forward for more opportunities for us to exercise our
social responsibility.

IEEE UniMAP SB Color Run
Microelectronic Photonics Talk
On October 5th, 2016, an IEEE Photonics lecture series
organized by School of Microelectronic, School of
Computer and Communication engineering and co-
organized by IEEE UniMAP SB was held. The talk was
given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Angela Amphawan who holds a
PhD in optical communication obtained from University
of Oxford, UK. Her talk was about the importance of
Optical Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) which
leverages on the plurality of modes in multimode fiber. In
MDM, independent data streams are transmitted using
modes in a multimode fiber. The lecture discusses several
techniques for multiplexing/de-multiplexing modes in
MDM.
On November 19th, 2016, a Color Run to promote
IEEE and to instill a healthy lifestyle amongst UniMAP
undergraduates was organized by IEEE UniMAP SB. The
event was, officiated by the Deputy Vice Chancellor
(DVC) for Student/Alumni Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Fo’ad Sakdan and closing ceremony was initiated by our
very own Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof Dr Zul Azhar
Zahid Jamal. A talk small about joining IEEE and its
benefits was given by the VC, where he urge every
student on joining such organization, which is filled with
great people, is one away to gain knowledge, expand
social networking, learn from the experts and
opportunities for scholarship. The event ended after
prizes was given by the VC. This event was sponsored
by Husmat Furniture, Malaysia Event and Printing, MSY
(Engineering Consultant), Brader Kopi, Kerajaan Negeri
Perlis, and UniMAP as well. UniMAP Vice Chancellor
(VC), Prof Dr Zul Azhar hope and give full support to
IEEE UniMAP SB to organizing an IEEE Color Run again
as an annual event for IEEE UniMAP SB.
APACE 2016
From December 11 to 13, 2016, IEEE Asia-Pacific
Conference on Applied Electromagnetics (APACE)
conference was held. This event was a program where
we at IEEE UniMAP SB had the chance to help run the
conference from behind the scene Fully sponsored by the
IEEE AP/MTT/EMC Joint Chapter of Malaysia (Antennas
and Propagation, Microwave Theory and Techniques and
Electromagnetic Compatibility)

series are organized alternately with the IEEE RFM.
Academics and practitioners working in the domain of
applied electromagnetics are solicited to present latest
research findings and best practices, share ideas and
initiate networking and collaboration.
