Baddest Supercomputer on EarthChina’s Tianhe-2 (Milky Way 2) posted the same 33.9 petaflop mark as before to
retain the title of most powerful supercomputer on Earth for a third year. If the
second-place system is a titan, Tianhe-2 is a colossus, packing a grand total of
5,856,000 processor and accelerator cores into a gigantic cluster architecture.

Computer Passes Turing Test for First Time
Eugene Goostman seems like a typical 13-year-old Ukrainian boy, at least that's what a third
of judges at a Turing Test competition thought recently. Goostman says that he likes
hamburgers and candy and that his father is a gynecologist, but it's all a lie. This boy is a
program created by computer engineers led by Russian Vladimir Veselov and Ukrainian
Eugene Demchenko. That a third of judges were convinced that Goostman was a human in
unrestricted conversation is significant as at least 30 percent of judges must be swayed for
a computer to pass the famous Turing Test. The test, created by legendary computer
scientist Alan Turing in 1950, was designed to answer the question "Can machines think?"
and is a well-known staple of artificial intelligence studies. Source: The Verge 6/14

Stanford bioengineers have developed faster, more energy-efficient microchips based on the
human brain, 9,000 times faster and using significantly less power than a typical PC. This
offers greater possibilities for advances in robotics and a new way of understanding the
brain. For instance, a chip as fast and efficient as the human brain could drive prosthetic
limbs with the speed and complexity of our own actions. It can simulate one million neurons
and billions of synaptic connections. Boahen is working with other Stanford scientists to
develop prosthetic limbs that would be controlled by a Neurogrid-like chip. Boahen and his
team have developed Neurogrid, a circuit board consisting of 16 custom-designed
"Neurocore" chips. Together these 16 chips can simulate 1 million neurons and billions of
synaptic connections. The team designed these chips with power efficiency in mind. Their
strategy was to enable certain synapses to share hardware circuits. The result was
Neurogrid – a device about the size of an iPad that can simulate orders of magnitude more
neurons and synapses than other brain mimics on the power it takes to run a tablet
computer. Qualcomm could add a “neural processing unit” to mobile-phone chips to handle
sensory data and tasks such as image recognition. http://www.stanford.edu/group/brainsinsilicon/

Quantum Device Detects and Corrects Its Own Errors
Researchers in the John Martinis Lab at UC Santa Barbara have developed
quantum circuitry that self-checks for errors and suppresses them — preserving
the qubits’ state(s) and imbuing the system with reliability that is foundational for
building powerful large-scale superconducting quantum computers. Unlike
classical computing, in which the computer bits exist on one of two binary
(“yes/no”, or “true/false”) positions, qubits can exist at any and all positions
simultaneously, in various dimensions. It is this property, called
“superpositioning,” that gives quantum computers their phenomenal
computational power, but it is also this characteristic which makes qubits prone
to “flipping,” especially when in unstable environments, and thus difficult to work
with. So the researchers developed an error process that involves creating a
scheme in which several qubits work together to preserve the information stored
across several qubits.http://www.kurzweilai.net/a-quantum-device-that-detects-and-corrects-its-own-errors

Will Transcendence Transcend Science Fiction?
According to futurists, the Singularity will be the singular most important incident to ever
unfold. The term describes technology’s version of a black hole: that incredible moment
when artificial intelligence will surpass our own. Transcendence is the newest dystopian
interpretation of this A.I. benchmark. The reviews have been less than glowing, but it still
brings a pivotal question into sharp focus: Are we nearing true machine intelligence?
Transcendence tells the story of a dying technology visionary, played by Johnny Depp, who
uploads his brain to a computer right before he dies. The story takes place in the present,
compelling many to question the possibility of an apocalyptic singularity to transpire. While
the technology depicted in Transcendence is still very much science fiction, it alludes to
some remarkable developments that are unfolding in the artificial intelligence community.

Hugh Herr, who heads the Biomechatronics research group at the MIT Media Lab, is creating
bionic limbs that emulate the function of natural limbs marrying human physiology with
electromechanics. A double amputee himself, he is responsible for breakthrough advances
in bionic limbs that provide greater mobility and new hope to those with physical
disabilities. Herr’s research group has developed gait-adaptive knee prostheses for

Bionic Arm Created by DEKA Research for DARPA
The DEKA Arm System or "Luke Arm" is one of the most advanced robotic prostheses ever
built. This is the first prosthetic arm approved by the FDA that "translates signals from a
person's muscles to perform complex tasks." The DEKA Arm was created by famed inventor
Dean Kamen and his team at DEKA Research and Development Corp. as part of DARPA's
Revolutionizing Prosthetics program. The goal of the US $100 million program was
developing an advanced prosthetic arm with near-natural control to improve quality of life
for amputees. DARPA funded two groups: the DEKA project and another effort led by
researchers at Johns Hopkins University. What makes the DEKA Arm unique is that it can
carry out multiple, simultaneous powered movements, and its wrist and fingers can adjust
its positions to perform six different user-selectable grips. In addition, force sensors let the
robotic hand precisely control its grasp. Source: IEEE Spectrum 5/14

Advanced Prosthetic Limbs Enable Sensation of Touch
A team of clinicians, engineers, and scientists at the University of Pittsburg is developing
technology that could allow amputees to have more natural control and even feel the
sensation of touch with prosthetic limbs. Today’s artificial limbs do not provide sensory
information to users, which means that even the most advanced prosthetic limbs feel numb,
so they function more like tools than body parts. Researchers are currently working on
pinpointing the electrical signals that occur in the body’s nerves. To gather baseline data,
they are mapping electrical signals and muscle movement from volunteers who have fully
functioning arms, via electrodes that are implanted into forearm muscles. Additionally, they
are testing a group of volunteer amputees by simulating the portion of the spinal cord
nerves that are responsible for forearm and hand sensation. If an electrical signal is
detected in the required nerves, the amputees are deemed candidates for feeling the
sensations of touch with the new prosthetic limbs. Source: In Compliance Magazine 3/15

Four individuals diagnosed as having complete paralysis of the legs were able to
intentionally move their knees, ankles, and toes while undergoing electrical stimulation of
the spinal cord, according to a study recently published in the journal Brain. The novel
therapy has the potential to change the grim prognosis of people who have been paralyzed
for years, say the researchers involved in the study based out of the University of Louisville
Frazier Rehab Institute in Kentucky. The research is a continuation of a 2011 groundbreaking
pilot trial that demonstrated that electrically stimulating the spinal cord in precise ways
enabled a man paralyzed below his chest to stand independently for minutes at a time. The
announcement of that pilot trial was incredibly exciting, but scientists wondered if it could
be repeated with other individuals. The new paper reveals that the therapy has been
successful in four people, and that it can enable not only independent standing, but also
other kinds of voluntary leg and foot movement. Source: IEEE Spectrum 4/14

Liquid Metal Reconnects Severed Nerves in Frogs
Severed nerves in the body can lead to the loss of muscle function and muscle
atrophy, unless the severed nerve endings get reconnected. One possible new
solution devised by Chinese researchers uses liquid metal to create an electrical
conduit capable of transmitting signals between the severed nerve ends. The
liquid metal solution consists of a gallium-indium-tin (GaInSn) alloy that has
successfully bridged severed sciatic nerves taken from the calf muscles of
bullfrogs, according to Technology Review. A team at Tsinghua University in
Beijing showed that the metal alloy, capable of remaining liquid at body
temperature and thought to be benign, could transmit nerve signals much more
effectively than the commonly-used Ringer's solution meant to mimic the salt
mixture in body fluids. Source: IEEE Spectrum 5/14http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/biomedical/bionics/liquid-metal-reconnects-severed-nerves-in-frogs

The first known human climbing of a glass wall using gecko-inspired climbing devices has been demonstrated by DARPA’s Z-Man program. A 218-pound climber ascended and descended 25 feet of glass with no climbing equipment other than a pair of hand-held, gecko-inspired paddles (he also carried an additional 50-pound load in one trial). A gecko is able to climb on glass by using van der Waals intermolecular forces between the spatulae (nanoscale hairs), resulting in easy attachment and removal of the gecko’s toes from the surface. To enable gecko-like dynamic climbing at human scale, engineers at Draper Laboratory of Cambridge, Mass. created climbing paddles capable of balancing adhesive forces in both the shear (parallel to the vertical surface) and normal (perpendicular to the vertical surface) directions. In February 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first
treatment that can restore (limited) eyesight to (some) blind people. Despite the
caveats, it's an exciting milestone. The treatment involves electrodes implanted in
the eyes of people whose retinas are damaged. The FDA approved the implants
for people with severe cases of retinitis pigmentosa, a relatively small patient
population. But the company that makes the implants, Second Sight Medical
Products, says they can benefit a much broader group of people with vision
problems, including many elderly people who suffer from macular degeneration. A
competing technology is under development from the German company Retina
Implant AG, whose system was undergoing clinical trials last year.

Vision-Correcting Displays
New technology could lead to e-readers, smartphones, and displays that let users
dispense with glasses. Researchers at the MIT Media Laboratory and the
University of California at Berkeley have developed a new display technology that
automatically corrects for vision defects, no glasses (or contact lenses) required.
The technique could lead to dashboard-mounted GPS displays that farsighted
drivers can consult without putting their glasses on, or electronic readers that
eliminate the need for reading glasses, among other applications.

Low cost genome sequencing is expected to revolutionize healthcare among
other aspects of life. iNanoBio is developing a novel sensor device for high speed
genome sequencing with technology from Arizona State University (ASU).
Sequencing 3 billion bases in a short period of time is an extremely complex task.
Various strategies utilize piecemeal sequencing and massively parallel techniques
for high throughput readout. Sequencing using nanopores is a promising
approach, but most often requires development of advanced methods for slowing
down the DNA as it translocates through the nanopore. Small read lengths, need
for elaborate sample preparation and complex data processing are required,
which in-turn add to the cost of sequencing. Rather than slowing down the DNA
as it translocates through a nanopore iNanoBio’s strategy is to sequence the DNA
at high speed using their FET nano sensor devices. Field effect transistor sensors
can have high switching frequencies of up to 1 GHz or more, which enables faster
signal acquisition with minimal background noise. They expect sensing of
individual bases at higher speeds, with larger signal to noise ratios, than when
using other strategies. http://www.inanobio.com/genomesequencing.php

New Nanodevice Defeats Drug Resistance and Releases Cancer Drugs
A new nanodevice developed by researchers at MIT’s Institute for Medical
Engineering and Science (IMES) can help overcome cancer cell drug resistance
(after chemotherapy) by first blocking the gene that confers drug resistance, then
launching a new chemotherapy attack against the disarmed tumors. The device,
which consists of gold nanoparticles coated with a “nanobeacon” DNA hairpin,
near-infrared dyem and a dark-quencher embedded in a hydrogel that can be
injected or implanted at a tumor site, could also be used more broadly to disrupt
any gene involved in cancer.

A successful Kickstarter project with over $2.76 million in funding,
the SCiO pocket molecular sensor lets users scan and obtain
information about the chemical makeup of materials and physical
objects. Once an item is scanned, the chemical makeup is
compared against items in a cloud-based database, and the
information about the item is sent back to a smartphone. The device
is capable of scanning food (for nutritional information), medicines,
plants (for health purposes), oils, plastics, wood and more. The
device works by shining a light on an object and using a
spectrometer to analyze the properties of the light reflected back.

Breathalyzer Test May Detect Deadliest Cancer
Lung cancer causes more deaths in the U.S. than the next three most common
cancers combined (colon, breast, and pancreatic). The reason for the striking
mortality rate is simple: poor detection. Lung cancer attacks without leaving any
fingerprints, quietly afflicting its victims and metastasizing uncontrollably — to
the point of no return. Now a new device developed by a team of Israeli, American,
and British cancer researchers may turn the tide by both accurately detecting
lung cancer and identifying its stage of progression. The breathalyzer test,
embedded with a "NaNose" nanotech chip to literally "sniff out" cancer tumors,
was developed by Prof. Nir Peled of Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of
Medicine, Prof. Hossam Haick (inventor) of the Technion — Israel Institute of
Technology, and Prof. Fred Hirsch of the University of Colorado School of
Medicine in Denver. http://www.aftau.org/newsroom?5f0ab72c-d32d-4437-a023-83d04c39e29f

Autodesk 123D Catch
Autodesk is a dominant player in the world of professional 3D engineering software; the
company's new suite of free, simple tools gives amateurs the power to create, share, and
print 3D models. Here's how it works: The user takes 20 to 30 photos of an object, then
loads them into the 123D Catch software. The software analyzes the images to produce a 3D
CAD model that can be edited onscreen like a digital photo. The CAD file can be sent to a 3D
printer or turned into a series of 2D paper prints that the user can glue to cardboard, cut to
shape, and assemble into a real-world 3D model. Source Popular Mechanics 10/12

Chameleon-Like Artificial ‘Skin’ Shifts Color on Demand
Engineers from the University of California at Berkeley have created an incredibly
thin, chameleon-like material that can be made to change color on demand by
simply flexing it with a tiny amount of force. This new material-of-many-colors
offers intriguing possibilities for an entirely new class of display technologies,
color-shifting camouflage, and sensors that can detect otherwise imperceptible
defects in buildings, bridges, and aircraft. Source: Kurzweil.AIhttp://www.kurzweilai.net/chameleon-like-artificial-skin-shifts-color-on-demand

The Onewheel (http://rideonewheel.com/), a self-balancing electric skateboard, makes you
feel like you are surfing or snowboarding when you ride on a flat surface. Controlling the
board is easy, simply lean forward when you want to accelerate and lean back to slow down
or stop. Learning how to use the board only takes a couple of minutes and people with
experience in boardsports are ready to aggressively ride almost as soon as they jump on
the board. The reason this board is so easy use is because of the self-balancing technology.
Solid-state MEMS and algorithms balance the board around the wheel. The board uses a
500W brushless hub motor and the wheel is the only moving part -- so there are no gears,
belts, or chains to maintain. The Onewheel can go up to 12 mpg and on a single charge and
can ride for four to six miles (depending on speed and terrain). Recharging the 48V lithium
iron phosphate battery is quick with the ultra charger, only 20 minutes. With a standard
charger it will take about an hour. Source Onewheel/Design News 1/14

Designer Greg Brown and engineer Dave Fawcett are finessing a design for a jet-
propelled car that can reach speeds up to 550 miles in the air, but then converts
into a zero-emissions electric car on the ground. Over the last few years flying
cars like the Terrafugia Transistion and the Skylys have provided a realistic
glimpse into the future of flying cars. The idea of a jet-propelled flying car has
been missing, but the GF7 could bridge that divide if it comes to life. On the
ground the GF7 drives like a standard car with its four wheels and wings folded
up. It can reach speeds up to 100 mph and the 50 kWh battery pack has a range
that’s on par with electric vehicles at between 80-120 miles. Upon take off the
wheels retract into the fuselage and the wings fold down with a wing span of 23
feet. The jet engine also recharges the battery pack during flight. Unlike the
Terrafugia, the GF7 can fly at altitudes up to 38,000 feet high with a range of up to
a thousand miles. Brown and Fawcett hope to have a flying prototype completed
in four years. Unfortunately, the GF7 won’t be cheap with a price tag expected
between $3-5 million, about the same as other small jet aircraft.http://inhabitat.com/gf7-flying-car-reaches-550-mph-in-the-air-then-turns-into-an-electric-car-on-the-ground/

Mars One is a Dutch non-profit organization determined to establish a permanent human settlement on
our neighboring red planet by the year 2025. The organization's plan consists of "cargo missions and
unmanned preparation of a habitable settlement, followed by human landings," powered by big dreams
and paid for by fundraising contributions. The group estimates the cost of putting four people on Mars
somewhere around the $4 billion mark, a number the group feels confident in hitting. Though MIT
aerospace engineers have poked holes in Mars One's ambitious plans (debunking the organization's
major claim that Martian settlements are "possible today with existing technologies"), that's not stopping
anyone from moving forward with the proposed expedition. In February 2015, Mars One selected 100 top
candidates from those who have applied to go to Mars in the next decade. Source: Popular Mechanicshttp://www.popularmechanics.com/space/moon-mars/a14128/meet-the-100-finalists-who-want-to-move-to-mars/

people over a wider area. Looking ahead, Project Loon will continue to expand the
pilot through 2014, with the goal of establishing a ring of uninterrupted
connectivity around the 40th southern parallel, so that pilot testers at this latitude
can receive continuous service via balloon-powered Internet. http://www.google.com/loon/

Can Cyborg Moths Bring Down Terrorists?
At some point in the not too distant future, a moth will take flight in the hills of northern Pakistan, and flap towards a suspected terrorist training camp. But this will be no ordinary moth. Inside it will be a computer chip that was implanted when the creature was still a pupa, in the cocoon, meaning that the moth’s entire nervous system can be controlled remotely. The moth will thus be capable of landing in the camp without arousing suspicion, all the while beaming video and other information back to its masters via what its developers refer to as a “reliable tissue-machine interface.” The creation of insects whose flesh grows around computer parts – known from science fiction as ‘cyborgs’ – has been described as one of the most ambitious robotics projects ever conceived by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the research and development arm of the US Department of Defense. U.S. DARPA LANdroids
DARPA is soliciting proposals for LANdroids, a new program to develop intelligent autonomous radio relay nodes that exploit movement to establish and manage mesh networks in urban settings. The goal is to create small, inexpensive, smart robotic radio relay nodes that dismounted warfighters drop as they deploy in urban settings. The nodes then self-configure and form a mesh network, a temporary infrastructure that establishes communications over the region. As the situation changes, the nodes will adapt the network, such as self-healing if nodes are destroyed by the enemy. Through movement and density, the LANdroids will enable effective communications in complex non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments like those found in urban settings, dealing with phenomena like fades and shadows through strategic self-placement and chaining of the relays.

The Thermal Hydraulic Engine from Deluge, Inc. represents a breakthrough technology that
can perform the work of similar engines at a fraction of the operating costs while releasing
no emissions into the air. Also known as the Natural Energy (NE) Engine, this patented,
innovative engine employs alternative heat sources such as solar, geothermal, and waste
heat energy, as well as fuels like natural gas, to convert hot water into mechanical power
without combustion. Under development by Deluge since 1996, the NE Engine has been use-
tested in numerous applications including oil and gas pumping, water pumping,
desalination, electricity generation, compression, and air handling, and can operate as
effectively in third-world countries as in highly industrialized countries. Initially conceived
as a replacement for the internal combustion engine, the NE Engine has attracted the
attention of many who want to use this pioneering, clean, and cost-effective technology as a
way to lower production costs. The technology’s cost effective and environmentally-
innocuous features make it an attractive power source for most any application, including
pumping water for desalination processes. http://delugeinc.com/DESALINATION.html

Deka R&D Slingshot Water Purification Machine
Ensuring access to clean water is one of the greatest challenges faced by under-
developed countries. Existing approaches to water purification require expertise
in system design, operation and maintenance. Deka R&D, led by genius inventor
Dean Kamen, the creator of the Segway transporter, has designed Slingshot, a
simple vapor compression water purification machine that transforms any source
water into safe drinking water producing roughly 30 liters of water an hour using
no more energy than required by a standard handheld hair dryer. A partnership
with Coca-Cola will bring Slingshot to communities in need of clean water in rural
parts of Latin America and Africa. http://www.dekaresearch.com/water.shtml

Cynthia Koenig, a young social entrepreneur from New York, learned that
millions of girls and women around the world spend hours each day
collecting water from distant sources. She decided to create the
WaterWheel, a new way to help people in poor communities collect,
transport, store, and use water receiving a $100,000 Grand Challenges
Canada prize. The WaterWheel allows people to roll water in a 50-liter
container versus carrying it in 5 gallon (19 liter) jugs which can save
women 35 hours per week in water transport time, as well as prevent the
physical strain that comes from balancing 40 pounds of water on top of
their heads for hours each day. (http://wellowater.org/)

New research by scientists at Rice University demonstrated that forests of carbon
nanotubes can be made to harvest water molecules from arid desert air and store
them for future use. The invention called “hygroscopic scaffold” mimics
the Stenocara beetle, which survives in the desert by stretching its wings to
capture and drink water molecules from the early morning fog and has
a superhydrophobic (water-repelling) bottom and a hydrophilic (water loving) top
The water is stored until released either by squeezing the reusable scaffold or
until it slowly evaporates back into the atmosphere. If it becomes possible to grow
nanotube forests on a large scale, the invention could become an efficient,
effective water-collection device because it does not require an external energy
source. http://news.rice.edu/2014/06/11/nanotube-forests-drink-water-from-arid-air-2/

LifeStraw water filters from Vestergaard
convert contaminated water into clean,
safe drinking water. The easy-to-use filters
are a vital tool for some of the 780 million
people who don’t have ready access to
safe drinking water. This leaves them at
risk for diarrheal disease, which kills more
than 1.5 million people every year. Safe
drinking water is especially important for
vulnerable groups, such as children under
five, pregnant women and people living
with HIV. LifeStraw water filters also
prevent cryptosporidiosis, a major cause
of diarrheal illness in people living with
HIV and children under five. LifeStraw

Pranav Agarwal has built a solar-powered floating surface aerator that can be installed in water
bodies to prevent water stagnation and mosquito breeding. The device produces ripples by
generating air bubbles at regular intervals. It automatically switches on when it comes in contact
with water and an alarm alerts if the water body dries up or someone tries to remove the device
from water. The device is cost effective and being solar powered, it is energy independent and
maintenance-free. If this device is improved upon and ubiquitously installed, the world will soon be
free from mosquito borne diseases. YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42HqsWmc5cE

GlobaTrak's Trakdot is a GSM-based tracking device that uses the cellular
network, rather than GPS, to keep tabs on your bags. Trakdot pairs up with your
cellphone; once that's done, just pack it in your suitcase before checking your
bag. Trakdot runs on 2 AA batteries (included) and is FAA compliant. It uses an
onboard accelerometer to put itself to sleep while in transit, then wakes up upon
arrival and sends a text or email to your cellphone letting you know it's arrived.

LEDs can be engineered to produce practically any desired spectrum of visible
light. Blue or violet LEDs pump mixes of phosphors, which down-convert some of
the light and mix with the pump color to produce something humans perceive as
white light. Near-monochrome LEDs, whose spectrum amounts to a single sharp
peak, can be mixed at varying intensities to produce light of any apparent color in
a wide gamut. Hue is controlled over WiFi. The bulbs and router talk amongst
themselves using a wireless mesh network protocol called ZigBee, IEEE 802.15.4.

Energy-Generating Cloth Could Replace Batteries in Wearable Devices
Scientists at Sungkyunkwan University in Korea and University of Wollongong in
Australia have developed the first durable, flexible cloth that can harness human
motion to generate energy, allowing for self-powered smart clothes avoiding the
need for batteries, a current limitation in wearable electronics. The new textile can
charge batteries or supercapacitors without an external power source, making
new applications possible, such as health care monitoring and batteryless
personal electronics. The cloth is based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TNGs).
TNGs use two materials with different “triboelectric” polarities in a manner
analogous to static electricity, when the two materials are contacted or rubbed
together, then separated, electrons are generated and can flow through a
connected device.http://www.kurzweilai.net/this-energy-generating-cloth-could-replace-batteries-in-wearable-devices

A team of researchers at Michigan State University has developed a new type of solar
concentrator that when placed over a window creates solar energy while allowing people to
actually see through the window. It is called a transparent luminescent solar concentrator
and can be used on buildings, cell phones and any other device that has a clear surface.
“Glowing” infrared light is guided to the edge of the plastic where it is converted to
electricity by thin strips of photovoltaic solar cells.

Dean Kamen, Segway inventor, is now bringing energy autonomy and Stirling
engines powered by natural gas to the home with the Beacon 10. Stirling engines
are a promising 19th century idea finally coming to fruition in the 21st century that
can convert almost any fuel into electrical power, and properly implemented, they
may do so in a system that is clean, quiet, easy to use, easy to maintain, and has
a long operating life. For applications that need both electricity and clean heat, the
Stirling engine is exceedingly efficient. DEKA’s goal is to design a system with all
of the advantages of Stirling engines that can be manufactured cost-effectively.
NRG Energy plans to sell a product that is disruptive to the centralized power
business model. The company is working with Deka Research on an on-site
“energy appliance,” http://www.dekaresearch.com/stirling.shtml

The Navy’s Laser Weapon System
(LaWS) uses the Phalanx Close in
Weapon System’s (CIWS) radar track to
obtain a target and combines six high-
energy laser into a focused beam of
light. While the laser uses a mere 30
kilowatts per volley, a few dollars a
shot, the weapon is hampered by
inclement weather and other adverse
conditions.

Digital Life in 2025 - More-Hopeful Theses
• Information sharing over the Internet will be so effortlessly interwoven into
daily life that it will become invisible, flowing like electricity, often through
machine intermediaries.
• The spread of the Internet will enhance global connectivity that fosters more
planetary relationships and less ignorance.
• The Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and big data will make people
more aware of their world and their own behavior.
• Augmented reality and wearable devices will be implemented to monitor and
give quick feedback on daily life, especially tied to personal health.
• Political awareness and action will be facilitated and more peaceful change and
public uprisings like the Arab Spring will emerge.
• The spread of the ‘Ubernet’ will diminish the meaning of borders, and new
‘nations’ of those with shared interests may emerge and exist beyond the
capacity of current nation-states to control.
• The Internet will become ‘the Internets’ as access, systems, and principles are
renegotiated.
• An Internet-enabled revolution in education will spread more opportunities,
with less money spent on real estate and teachers.

Digital Life in 2025 - Less-Hopeful Theses
• Dangerous divides between haves and have-nots may expand, resulting in
resentment and possible violence.
• Abuses and abusers will ‘evolve and scale.’ Human nature isn’t changing;
there’s laziness, bullying, stalking, stupidity, pornography, dirty tricks, crime,
and those who practice them have new capacity to make life miserable for
others.
• Pressured by these changes, governments and corporations will try to assert
power and at times succeed as they invoke security and cultural norms.
• People will continue sometimes grudgingly to make tradeoffs favoring
convenience and perceived immediate gains over privacy; and privacy will be
something only the upscale will enjoy.
• Humans and their current organizations may not respond quickly enough to
challenges presented by complex networks.
• Most people are not yet noticing the profound changes today’s
communications networks are already bringing about; these networks will be
even more disruptive in the future.
Advice: Make Good Choices Today• Foresight and accurate predictions can make a difference; ‘The best way to
predict the future is to invent it.
