Ravenna is made up of some of the most beautiful natural areas of the Po Delta Park characterized from the presence of an extraordinary variety of landscapes and natural habitats which derive from the interaction between the natural evolutionary processes of the territory and the anthropic activities. Extension of the protected areas: about 19.000 hectares.

Natural Areas

There are numerous animals and plants species, many of which are protected by international and national regulations, but the biggest wealth comes from the avifauna.

There are 234 species birds; the large variety of species is due to the elevated bio-diversity of the area. Many different types of habitats can be found which leads to many possibilities for nesting and feeding.

Ravenna is one of the most singular and rich cities from an historical and artistic point of view.

Capital of the barbarian kingdoms and the Byzantine empire, protagonist of European history between the fifth and sixth centuries, the city was enhanced by the construction of some of Italy’s most extraordinary monuments.

Ravenna, Mosaic Capital

The city houses an amazing collection of basilicas, baptisteries and mausoleums with enchanting mosaic artworks. Eight of its monuments have been declared by UNESCO as patrimonies of humanities for their supreme display of mosaic work: San Vitale, Mausoleo di Galla Placidia, Battistero Neoniano, Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and Sant’apollinare in Classe, Battistero degli Ariani, Cappella Arcivescovile, and the Mausoleo di Teodorico.

Seen the petroleum cost always growing and the so distant Kyoto aims,among the principal activities of the environmental departement, there is the developing of the Energy Plan in order to reduce the energy consumption,

The Energy Plan is based on:Study of the main features of the present local energetic

systemDefinition of the main goals and strategic guidelines in order

to achieve a local sustainable energy system Individuation of actions and politics in order to

increase the efficiency of the energy system promote the renewable energy sources decrease the impact of the energy consumptions

What can the Municipality of Ravenna do ?What can the Municipality of Ravenna do ?

We will have to do, in the next future, an important, complex but necessary work to invert the trend we have seen before. With this aim we fully share the MUSEC project strategy, based on:

1. Organic energy policies (actions of the local authorities, adequate town planning and regulation, increas of renewable energy sources, ecc.);

2. Innovative Financing mechanisms;

3. Communication programs;

I am sure that the integration between Ravenna energy plan and MUSEC project will bring concrete and positive results.
