International Environmental Data Rescue Organization [IEDRO]
A 501(C)(3) non-profit, non-governmental organization that...
Locates, rescues and supports the digitization of all environmental data, worldwide.
Works with governments, foundations, and individuals to find funding for these efforts.

DATA RESCUE !
Why?
Starvation Prevention
Disease Prevention
Safer Construction
Better Flood Forecasting
Better Weather Forecasts
Improve Climate Change Prediction
Let’s Explain
Starvation Prevention
Prevent Mass Starvation
Over 8 million people, mostly elderly and children, perish every year from starvation and diseases that result from mal-nourishment.
When we have historic data, we can tell subsistence farmers when to expect floods and droughts in their regions.
They then can change what they plant and to plan for lean years.
Help Subsistence Farmers Plan
Disease Prevention
Disease PreventionEvery year between 1 to 2 million people, mostly the elderly and children, die of air borne diseases.
These diseases include:• Malaria• Yellow Fever• Encephalitis• Dengue Fever
Disease Prevention
Research links disease spread to past weather conditions available from data rescue work.
Health officials using weather forecasts, can determine when and to where a disease will spread (disease vectorization).
Early inoculations and spraying could save thousands of lives annually.
Data rescue leads to accurate timing of disease spread.
Disease Prevention
Preventive actions such as spraying and inoculating can then be done in advance of the disease’s arrival.
Safer Construction
Safer Construction• Environmental conditions
destroy under-designed structures
• Additional historical data provide more realistic construction specifications
Property and lives are saved.
Better Flood Forecasting
Flood ForecastingFloods kill more people than all other natural
disasters combined.
Computer programs provide accurate flood warnings if many years of historical observations are available.
Those data aren’t available in developing countries so…. people drown!
Better Forecasting• Years of environmental
data now deteriorating on paper charts!
• Information that is absolutely necessary to baseline flood forecast models.
Digitizing weather data
Saves lives!
• More historic data leads to better understanding of severe weather events.
• Better understanding leads to more accurate forecasts and warnings.
Better Forecasting
Climate ChangePrediction
Climate Change/Global Warming
1941
• Historic weather data assist in forecasting the direction and speed of climate change.
• We can thus decide how best to mitigate either the change or discover the adaptation humankind must take.
2004
Our successes so far….
328,000 upper-air observations rescued Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, Senegal and Zambia
190,000 surface observations rescued in Uruguay and 504,000 surface observations at a private museum in Punta Arenas, Chile
“Open and unrestricted exchange of digitized data” accepted by all participating countries
What we need now…1.Volunteers
2. Donations
