IEC 62368-1IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065 will soon be replaced by IEC 62368-1. Are you prepared?

Computing and networking products (e.g. PCs, routers, laptops/notebooks, tablets, as well as their power supplies)

Various other types of home or business equipment.

Communication products (e.g. Telecom, LAN, VAN)

Consumer electronics (e.g. amplifiers, digital cameras, music players)

Office appliances (e.g. copiers, document shredders)

Displays and display units (e.g. digital projectors, TVs, monitors)

Why is the standard changing?

As more products are falling under both IEC 60065 (AV equipment) and IEC 60950-1 (ITE equipment), the IEC 62368-1 safety standard was developed to converge these two standards with specific criteria – based on requirements that take into account the energy sources, safeguards and the intended user.

The new standard relates to a broad range of products

If you deal with any of the following product categories, the IEC 62368-1 standard will affect your business:

IEC 62368-1

IEC 60065 IEC 60950-1

Products that meet the legacy standards of IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065 may not automatically meet the new requirements of the IEC 62368-1

EN 62368-1 will supersede EN 60065 and EN 60950-1 in Europe on 20 December 2020. It is therefore critical that manufacturers of ITE and AV equipment develop a proactive plan now to ensure their products remain compliant and marketable.

Nemko offers a broad range of services that can help manufacturers engage proactively with IEC 62368-1. This way, they will be familiar with the challenges and opportunities in time to make the necessary adaptions to their production line.

Benefits of early engagement

Broad changes in standards and regulations will always pose a threat to the balance in product design, production and marketing. Being late can cause these delicate systems to come to a halt, as new routines and equipment cause most tasks to take more time and resources than planned for.

Nemko understands that time to market and quality are vital to ensure that your product sales will not suffer.

By engaging proactively with the IEC 62368-1 standard, manufacturers can further benefit from several distinct advantages:

By identifying safety hazards in the early product development phase, subsequent product designs can address those requirements.

Improved product marketability beyond 2020.

Improvements in manufacturing and supply chain management.

Time and cost savings in the initial product concept design.

Greater international market access capabilities and reduced disruption to international sales.

Reduced time to market with products that will meet the IEC 62368-1 requirements.

Describe the person(s) who will use the equipment

Ordinary person An Ordinary person is a person who is neither a Skilled person nor an Instructed person. Ordinary persons include not only users of the equipment, but also all persons who may have access to the equipment or who may be in the vicinity of the equipment.Instructed person An Instructed person is a person who has been instructed and trained by a Skilled person, to identify energy sources that may cause pain, AND take precautions to avoid unintentional contact with those energy sources.Skilled person A Skilled person is a person with relevant education or experience to enable him or her to avoid dangers and to reduce the likelihood of risks that may be created by the equipment.

Specify the energy sources

• Electricshock • Electricallycausedfire • Chemical• Mechanical • Thermal • Radiation

Define energy source class

• Class1 • Class2 • Class3

Classify the type of safeguard for each hazard

Equipment safeguardAn equipment safeguard is a physical part of the equipment.

Installation safeguardAn installation safeguard is a physical part of a man-made environment.

Personal safeguardA personal safeguard is, for example, a physical device worn on the body.

Behavioural safeguardA behavioural safeguard is a voluntary or instructed behaviour intended to reduce the likelihood of transfer of energy to a body part.

Classify the level of safe guard needed for each hazard

Basic safeguard A safeguard that is effective under normal and abnormal operating conditions whenever hazardous energy is present.Supplementary safeguard A safeguard that is effective in the event of a single fault of any part, including a fault of the basic safeguard.Double safeguard Basic plus supplementary safeguard.Reinforced safeguard A single, robust safeguard that is effective under normal operating conditions, abnormal operating conditions, and single fault condition.

Classify operating conditions

Normal operating condition Representstherangeofnormalusethatcanbereasonablyexpected.Single fault condition Fault of a single safeguard (not reinforced), component or device.Abnormal operating condition Temporaryconditionthatisnotnormaloperatingconditionorsinglefaultcondition.

IEC 62368-1 THE HAZARD BASED APPROACH AT A GLANCE

The Hazard Based approach of IEC 62368-1 uses new performance and construction requirements that take into account the energy sources, safeguards, the intended user and more to ensure safety. By evaluating the aspects in the table below, manufacturers can save both time and resources in the testing phase.

Global market access

The adoption of IEC 62368-1 varies from market to market, adding to the complexity of the transition to the standard. If you are planning to sell to multiple markets, it is crucial that you understand which standard the various markets base their market access requirements on.

As we come closer to the end of EN 60065 and EN 60950-1 in Europe, we foresee that more companies will require testing and certification for two parallel standards.

You can find the latest overview of the adoption status for some of the major markets on Nemko’s webpage.
