MEDIA AND ITS IMPACT

an the media impact our perception of what is true? For years, this question has

been asked and debated by professionals from within and out of the media industry. What more in Malaysia with the recent unfortunate event of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. Seeing the impor-tance of the media in shaping the nation’s minds and perceptions, IDR organised two Intellectual Discourse sessions, both featur-ing Datuk Abdul Kadir Jasin on 20 April 2014. The morning session was held at the official residence of YAB Mentri Besar Perak for government leaders, whereas the afternoon session was held at Perak Darul Rizuan’s Banquet Hall for government officials and the public.

Datuk Abdul Kadir Jasin is the Editor-in-Chief of Berita Publishing Sdn Bhd, a maga-zine publishing company. His career includes serving as journalist, editor, editor-in-chief and group editor for BERNAMA, the New Straits Times, Berita Harian, The New Sunday Times, Business Times, The

Malay Mail, and The Sunday Mail. Over the span of his career, he has received numerous awards and letters of appreciation from within, as well as from outside the country. Datuk Abdul Kadir Jasin was eventually appointed Chairman of BERNAMA, the

company where he first started his career in journalism.

As the morning session was targeted for government leaders, the lecture was aptly titled as “Kelajuan Persepsi = 186 Ribu Batu Per Saat”, to raise the fact that people’s perception of an issue can change as fast as the speed of light – hence, the need for Perak’s leaders to understand the role of the media in delivering information.

On the issue of media and perception, Datuk Abdul Kadir Jasin admits that the younger generation is now more inclined to gather news through new media such as online news portals, social networks and blogs.

“What’s happening is a dichotomy; the young prefers the new whereas the old remain loyal to mainstream media.”

He continued to advise leaders to “convey the right messages to the people.”

“I hope to see a stop in news that highlight personal attacks between politicians. In fact, governments and its agencies should highlight its policies and implementations so the people are constantly updated.”

In the afternoon session entitled “Mangsa ke-240 MH370 – Media” (MH370’s 240th victim – The Media), Datuk A. Kadir Jasin along with 500 participants explored and reviewed the role of the media in Malaysia in light of the recent event of missing MAS flight MH370.

The Historiography of Bagan Datoh

agan Datoh is a small township located near the coast of the Malacca Straits,

south west of Ipoh, Perak. It is believed to be the location that holds the history of Perak’s early years and how the Perak Sultanate came into Perak, from Malacca.

The Pensejarahan Bagan Datoh event saw five presentations from local historians on

B

the story of Bagan Datoh. It was officiated by IDR CEO Dr. Mazalan Kamis as a show of support to the academicians who are study-ing and exploring the history of this beautiful and scenic town.

According to Dr. Mazalan, “IDR believes that history is important as our view of history shapes the way we view the present, and therefore dictates what answers we offer for existing concerns. On top of that, IDR also recognises the importance of local and indigenous knowledge in our work.”

The event was part of the IDR Lecture Series, a series of workshops that are relevant and impactful to IDR and Perak.

“I hope to see a stop in news that highlight personal attacks between politicians. In fact, governments and its agencies should highlight its policies and implementations so the people are constantly updated.”

Perak Amanjaya Transformation Dialogue with Training Providers

here are three types of transformation that IDR is advocating for the Perak State

Government to achieve Perak Amanjaya and they are: Thinking, Experential and Character Transformations. In view of this, IDR had organised the Perak Amanjaya Transformation Dialogue to gather proposals from 65 training providers.

For the training providers, this is an excellent opportunity for the companies to produce training

T materials that encompass subjects such as strategic planning and thinking, monitoring and KPI setting, team building, networking, initiating productivity, and sparking creativity.

Deputy State Secretary (Management) Dato’ Haji Razali bin Othman in his speech said,” We recognise that there are challenges to achieveing Perak Amanjaya, hence, emphasis must be given to developing human capital especially for target groups like civil servants, women, youth and

rural/indigenous peoples.”

“We hope that this strategic transformation programme will be able to produce powerful Change Agents that can help to realise Perak Amanjaya,” he added.

Dato’ Haji Razali was among the 95 participants who attended the dialogue.

www.idr.com.my

pril is World Autism Awareness Month and in conjunction with this, IDR invited Puan Siti

Suhaida Md Hambari, Special Education Supervisor for Perak’s Education Department to speak about Autism, a condition that affects thousands of children and adults in Malaysia. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. Puan Siti Suhaida was a special education teacher from 2007 to 2011 before she was appointed to supervise the Special Education department. Through a presentation that consisted informative slides and video, Puan Siti Suhaida brought the audience into an enlightening journey about Autisme and Autistic people.

Thereafter, the 55-strong audience consisting of visitors from NGOs and state-linked companies, are entertained by musical performances by students from SK Seri Mutiara and SK Pendidikan Khas Ipoh. The former consisted of a singing and piano performance duet by two talented visually-impaired boys, while the latter, comprised seven hearing-impaired boys and girls who performed the song “Let it Go” from the popular animated movie Frozen, in sign language.
