Dear Friends, I am pleased to offer, once again, the International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance in New York City. The International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance (IDHA) is a core program of the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA) at Fordham University, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at Fordham University, and the Center for International Humanitarian Cooperation (CIHC). The Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA) was created at Fordham University in December 2001 to forge partnerships with relief organizations, offer rigorous academic and training courses at the graduate and undergraduate level, host symposia, and publish books relating to humanitarian affairs. The Institute enables humanitarian workers to develop relationships with the University and the international community in New York City, in addition to being a university wide center reporting directly to the President of Fordham. With the creation of a graduate Master’s and undergraduate Minor and Major degree programs, the Institute offers an academic base for the study and development of international health, human rights, and other humanitarian issues, especially those that occur in periods of conflict. The IIHA trains students for careers in the humanitarian field by combining an advanced academic approach with the shared practical field experience of both students and faculty. It provides consultation on humanitarian affairs to the Fordham community, and the international development community at large. Through these contacts, the IIHA creates a unique bridge between academia and front line humanitarian efforts worldwide. The Center for International Humanitarian Cooperation (CIHC) was founded in 1992 to promote healing and peace in countries shattered by natural disasters, armed conflicts, and ethnic violence. It employs its resources and unique personal contacts to stimulate interest in humanitarian issues and to promote innovative educational programs and training models. Our extensive list of publications as well as our regular symposia address both the basic issues and emerging challenges of humanitarian assistance. The IDHA serves the United Nations and other international humanitarian agencies and organizations. Nearly three thousand IDHA graduates from some 135 nations now hold leading positions in humanitarian operations around the world.

The IIHA has trained nearly 3,000 participants worldwide. Many are still working in situations of complex emergencies, and do not have the luxury of time to take a year or two from their professional lives. The MIHA is designed in response to their requests for a flexible yet academically rigorous degree-granting program that combines a theoretical basis with applied knowledge. If you are interested in the MIHA program, please visit www.fordham.edu/iiha for more information. Academic Credit: Formal academic credit through Fordham University is available as Pass/Fail to successful graduates of the IDHA. In order to qualify for academic credit, the participant must receive the IDHA, and must have already had the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree or better at the beginning of the IDHA. Candidates who are interested must complete an academic credit form and submit it together with copies of all transcripts from previous academic institutions. Disclaimer: The program reserves the right to cancel/change seminars, change days, dates, times, or instructors without prior notification, due to the critical nature of the work of the professional staff.
