Identifying Duplicates in Microsoft Excel

You can remove duplicates from an Excel spreadsheet by selecting Remove Duplicates on the Data ribbon.

But what if you just want to check which records have been duplicated? Use the formula in cell D2 as shown here, (=A2&B2&C2) and copy it down to the end of the column.

Make sure the column is still selected. Next, go to the Home ribbon and select Conditional Formatting. Choose Highlight Cell Rules and then Duplicate Values.

Click OK to the option box as shown here.

You should now see that your duplicate values are highlighted.

Sort the list into alphabetic order.

Make sure that you expand the selection.

All duplicates should now be together.

Notice both Eden Jamesons from Leicestershire are highlighted but Eden Jameson from Cambridgeshire is not.

You could now apply a Filter…….

…….. and Filter by Colour.
