Sketchbook Ideas to help you
Observational Drawings• Observational drawings are drawings
from life. Up until this point I accepted pictures from the Internet, cartoons, etc.
• I want at least one of the two observational drawings to be of a real life object. This could be a watch, a chair, your bed, whatever you want.
• Please, no contour drawings. Include as much detail as possible.
Observational Ideas
▪ Fill your page with the same object, drawn at different angles.
Observational Ideas
▪ If you do choose to look at a picture in a magazine/online, cut it in half and finish the image.
Doodles
▪ Doodles are defined as rough drawings that are made absentmindedly. (aka, you don’t really think when you doodle!)
▪ This doesn’t mean you just scribble back and forth with your pen/pencil.
▪ Doodles should fill the page and should not include observational drawings.
Doodle Ideas
Shapes: – Choose a shape to fill up your page. Draw
different designs or colour in random blocks to create a dynamic doodle!
– Overlap your shapes!
– Colour some shapes, leave others black and white.
– Layer geometric shapes over organic shapes.
Doodle IdeasPatterns:
• Draw a continuous line all around your page, looping over and under.
• In each section, draw a different pattern (horizontal lines, dots, zig zags, vertical lines, etc)
• Get really creative and draw a few circles overtop to create even more sections. Colour the circle sections!
• Use tape to divde up sections and draw different patterns in the slots!
Doodle Ideas
Lines:• Similar to the shapes idea, but focus on lines
rather than shapes.• Connect similar or different types of lines.• Use shading to create depth (Remember when we
did optical illusions? Use the same process!)
Media Exploration
Media exploration is exploring with different materials (pens, paint, coloured pencils, etc)
Try to explore a different medium this term than you’ve used previously!
Media Exploration Ideas
• Create a page of value scales.
• Draw an object in 3 different media (such as pen, pencil, and coloured pencil) Use 3 different types of paper to really get creative!
• Create a two page spread of several different media!
Writing
Writing in your sketchbook should mean something to you. Whether you decide to write out the lyrics of a song, or create your own original poem, it should involve more than just logo slogans.
Writing Ideas
• Don’t just write the words down. Imagine the tone of the words that you are writing – how would your lettering differ for a happy tone vs a sad tone?
• Draw an image that reflects the words you’re writing with the words you’re writing.
• Write vertically, diagonally, backwards.• Include images and colour.
• Don’t include spaces or punctuation.• Fill an entire page with the same word, but
written in different fonts.
Collage
col·lage:nouna piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing.
Collage Ideas • Use different materials in one collage
(magazines, newspapers, fabric)
• Create an image or a scene using images, or shapes.
• Incorporate other media, such as pen or paint, along with the cut material.
• Layers and different sizes are your friend!!
Term Three: Due April 11For Term Three, you need:
• 2 observational drawings• 2 doodle pages• 2 medial exploration• 2 writing• 1 collage
I will be looking for quality. I want to see evidence of effort in every piece. Failure to do so will result in losing marks.
