The Trust FactorWith this latest edition of Ideas, I am once again reminded just how different a Big Box outlet and local building supply dealer really are.

We have an incredible group of talented people on the supply side of our business at Castle. Before you start your spring renovation job and no matter what it might be – replacing an exterior door, putting up siding, installing new windows or staining a deck – I urge you to review the ensuing pages before making that all important purchasing decision.

And when you do, would it not make sense to go to your local dealer, particularly knowing he or she is going to be as cost competitive as anyone in the business, including the very big box participants you may or may not visit on occasion?

But there is more to it than dollars and cents, which brings me to the other side of the equation, namely the level of service you

receive. In the overall purchasing experience, service is as important as the product itself.

As an example, if you drive into any small community in this country, you will see that dominant building supply centre that more times than not, has been there for many generations. As a result, a high degree of trust gets built over the ages because service, knowledge and experience are critical.

Service is not simply about making a sale, but understanding every aspect of that product you are about to purchase. When do you want that product delivered? Is it the right fit for the job? How much material is required?

To that end, I am reminded of a point I made two years ago in this space: “Going to a Big Box store to buy a hammer is one thing, but if you need to know every detailed step of your renovation project, the local independent building supply dealer is the only place to go.”
