Idaho State Women s Basketball Quick Facts

Why the Bengals? How did Idaho States athletic teams become the Bengals, when there just arent any to be found in the region? A good question. Originally, when the school was the Academy of Idaho in 1902, the schools athletic teams were dubbed Bantams, and it stayed that way until 1917, when J.A. Fogt became head football coach. Now Idaho Tech, the teams nickname was changed to Tigers, in part due to Ralph Hutchinson, who was the Director of Physical Education and Athletics. Hutchinson was a graduate of Princeton (the Tigers), so he founded the schools first booster club, the I Club, and brought the Tiger mascot with him. When the school became the University of Idaho-Southern Branch in 1927, the nickname switched to Bengals, although many newspaper and yearbook accounts refer to the team by both Bengals and Tigers. The freshman teams during this time suffered the unfortunate distinction of the nickname Kittens. As a branch of the University of Idaho, the schools colors were black and gold, just like the Vandals, and although the official colors switched to black and orange sometime in the 1940s, the football team wore black jerseys with gold trim through the 60s. The squad also used red numerals for a while in the late 1940s, and the squads 1970 home jerseys were more red than orange. It wasnt until 1971 that a truly orange jersey was used by the football team for the first time. The schools official colors are black and orange (PMS 165), and the trim color is gold (PMS 137), a small remembrance to harken back to ISUs rich history.

    ABOUT IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY

Idaho State University is a Carnegie-classified doctoral research and teaching institution that draws students from around the world. It meets the growing demand for higher-education services with seven collegesArts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Pharmacy and Technologyand a graduate school. Together, they offer nearly 280 certificate, bachelors, masters, doctoral and post-doctoral programs. ISU is the state-designated lead institution for health-professions education. Founded in 1901 as the Academy of Idaho, Idaho State University initially offered college-prep and industrial courses. In its first 100 years, the

school underwent considerable growth and change. Forty students were enrolled in Pocatello in 1902; today, about 14,000 students attend classes at the main campus and at centers around the state. More than 2,000 graduate annually. Idaho State Universitys role in higher education has grown dramatically. In 1927, legislation was passed making it the University of IdahoSouthern Branch. In 1963 it became Idaho State University. At

that time there were 3,500 students, four colleges offering six bachelors and eight masters degrees, and a trade and technical school with 14 programs. Current enrollment includes about 2,500 students attending ISUIdaho Falls, and more than 2,500 attending classes at ISUBoise, ISUTwin Falls, and centers in American Falls, Blackfoot, Coeur dAlene, Hailey, Preston and Soda Springs. Located in Pocatello, ISU is a short distance from several prominent recreation areas, foremost among them Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, and Sun Valley. ISU students enjoy unrivaled outdoor activities, from skiing to backpacking, bicycling, river-running, and fishing in Idahos famous blue-ribbon trout streams.

The original campus consisted of a four-block area of 8 1/2 acres donated by the citizens of Pocatello. Today, ISU has 105 buildings and 1,103 acres. The university offers cultural events and athletic programs featuring local, national and

    utilize special nuclear facilities.

The clock tower is one of the newer additions to the Pond Student Union Building, which houses ISUs official bookstore, several dining

options, a game room, a billiards hall, and a

    bowling alley.

The columns on Red Hill are a Pocatello landmark. They are atop of Red Hill, which overlooks Davis Field, which is home to Idaho States track and Womens Basketball programs.

The newest addition to the campus is the Rendezvous Center, which will house apartment-

style student housing, a dining hall, and classrooms, and the building is seen as a bridge

between the upper and lower campuses.

international participants. Idaho State University has grown through five name changes: the Academy of Idaho, 1901-1915; Idaho Technical Institute, 1915-1927; University of Idaho-Southern Branch, 1927-1947; Idaho State College, 1946-1963. ISU has an abundance of top-flight academic programs, including nationally acknowledged courses of study in business and pharmacy, and state-designated leadership in the health professions. The university has been ranked among the national leaders in the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) examinations for the past decade, with pass rates more than three times the national average. The statistics are based on students taking the exam for the first time. As Idahos center for education in health professions and with supporting physical and biological sciences, Idaho State University offers degrees in dental hygiene, dietetics, health-care administration, nursing, radiographic science, and speech pathology and audiology. Also offered are masters programs in education of the

deaf, nursing, physical therapy, and speech pathology and audiology. A doctorate is available in clinical psychology. ISU is a leader in educator preparation, offering bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in teacher education, educational administration, family and consumer sciences, physical education and dance, school psychology, special education, and vocational teacher education, occupational-training management, and corporate training. Neighbor to the Idaho National Laboratory and home of Idahos first university-related

business and research park, ISU has a continuing emphasis on business, engineering and the liberal arts, helping maintain a solid base for other academic disciplines. Overall, ISUs students take part in more than 280 certificate and degree programs in the college of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Pharmacy and Technology. If ISU doesnt have exactly what a student is looking for, the Office of Individualized Education oversees programs that provide students the opportunity to design a degree in a field not formally available at ISU. Such students can earn Bachelor of University Studies, Bachelor of Arts in General Studies, or Bachelor of Applied Technology degrees.

The Stephens Performing Arts Center is the jewel of Southeast Idaho. Universally lauded for its

design and acoustics, the building is the premiere concert hall in Idaho.

ACADEMIC SERVICES Every academic institutions first responsibility is to prepare its students for the best opportunity to graduate with their fullest potential. Idaho State understands this responsibility very well and instituted the Student-Athlete Support Center for its student-athletes, to enable them to balance the time requirements for both academics and athletics with the ultimate goal of obtaining their degree. Under the direction of Nancy Graziano, and assisted by a strong and caring staff, the Student-Athlete Support Center provides a variety of services with that in mind. The centers function begins even before a student-athlete sets foot on campus with transcript evaluation, and continues in helping the newcomer make the transition from high school or junior college to college. When they arrive at ISU we want it to be a positive experience, Graziano says. The Student-Athlete Support Center serves as a liaison for the student-athlete to all services

available to the student population as a whole, including but not limited to career counseling, the counseling and testing office, the academic skills center, the registrar, financial aid, the placement office, postgraduate scholarships, and any other student services. The office also provides tutoring, helps the student-athlete stay on track for graduation and NCAA eligibility, provides advising on general education courses until a major course of study is selected, and helps with career choices with the idea in mind that a college education can be more meaningful when a career is decided on. The office also makes presentations on drug and alcohol awareness available to the student-athletes. Even though our graduation rates are good, we are constantly striving to improve them, Graziano says. The creation of the Student-Athlete Support Center is a positive step in that improvement.

The refurbished Student-Athlete Support Center was dedicated in 2003 and is located on the south side of Holt Arena. As part of the refurbishment, student computers and additional space for academic counseling were added, bringing added benefits to the students. The department continues to expand, as in 2008, an expanded study center in Turner Hall was opened. The new center was funded with a $40,000 grant obtained

by Matt Steuart from the NCAA. The new study area features over a dozen computer stations, a quiet room, and has available tutoring for the student-athletes.

Athletic Training and Injury preventionISU SPORTS AND ORTHOPEDIC CENTERIdaho States athletic facilities had already boasted of the first domed stadium capable of housing both football and basketball ever constructed on a college campus, as well as Americas fastest indoor board track. With the June 1994 opening of the Sports & Orthopaedic Center at ISU, they include the premier weight training facility in the Big Sky Conference. The 25,000-foot Center includes a 6,800-foot state-of-the-art weight training area that is reserved strictly for Idaho States student-athletes. The area has weight lifting stations, stationary bicycles, and aerobics equipment, as well as an on-site strength and conditioning coach. The Center also houses the offices of Drs. Tony Joseph, M.R. Mickelson, ISUs team physician, Steve Coker, Kenneth E. Newhouse, the offices of The Pocatello Physical Therapy Clinic with physical therapists Ric Benedetti and Dan DesFosses, and an alumni, recruitment and educational center with meeting and classrooms. It was built at a cost of $2.5 million.

The Center is a joint venture of ISU and the Portneuf Medical Center and was 14 months in construction. It is a major milestone for ISU in fulfilling its mission as the states lead institution for health care education. It serves as an educational and training facility for health sciences students, faculty, area health care providers, and the community. The Center is beneficial for ISUs student-athletes in numerous ways, aside from the enormous benefit of the areas premier weight training facility being next door to Holt Arena. First and foremost, student-athletes have immediate access to physicians and therapists as well as the equipment used in treatment and rehabilitation. The Center was built at no cost to the public. The privately-financed structure will be leased to PMC and after the two 20-year land leases have expired, ownership is transferred back to Idaho State University.

    THE IDAHO STATE BASKETBALL TRADITION

Due to injuries the Bengals were reduced to eight active players for a majority of the season, but the strain didnt keep the team down as they finished fourth in the regular season and made their 11th Big Sky tournament appearance. ISU faced off against Sacramento State in the first round where Oana Iacovita hit the game winning shot with .6 seconds left to give Idaho State a 78-76 overtime victory at the Dahlberg Arena handing ISU its first overtime contest in a Big Sky Tournament game in program history. Four Bengals posted double-figures in points with Jenna Brown leading ISU scoring 23 points. ISU shot 51.9 percent for the contest and 61.5 percent from the trey. ISUs victory over the Hornets advanced them to the semifinal round where they had a near upset of eventual tournament champion Montana. The Bengals led Montana by 11 points in the first half and would reduce the Griz to a two point lead with 4:55 remaining before the Griz would take it away at the line to hand ISU a season ending 70-56 loss. Oana Iacovita would lead the Bengals with 22 points and seven rebounds followed by senior Jenna Brown with 15 points. The Bengals out-shot Montana in field goal percentage with 47.1 percent and three-point field goal percentage with 31.8 percent, but it was at the line that Montana stole the show hitting 19-of-22 while ISU reached the line just twice in the contest.

    2008-09

Boise State went on a 16-0 run starting with 7:45 to go, turning a close physical 49-44 game into a runaway, as the Boise State Broncos picked up their first ever postseason win, defeating ISU 77-54 at Taco Bell Arena. The Bengals finished their season 20-10, while Boise State improved to 24-7, and they ran their home court winning streak to 17 straight dating back to last season. Both teams struggled mightily from the field, but the Broncos were able to counter that with 27 offensive rebounds, allowing them to survive a 31% shooting night by getting off 85 shots. The Bengals had cut a nine-point Bronco second half to just five after a perfect laser pass from Andrea Videback to Natalie Doma made it 49-44 with 7:58 to go, but after a media timeout, Tasha Harris sank two free throws to start a 16-0 run that spanned just 3:52. Boise State picked up 66 rebounds, including the 27 on offense as the two teams had 110 combined rebounds. The Bengals were led by Andrea Lightfoot, who scored 16 in her final game, and Natalie Doma had another double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds, as she recorded her 77th consecutive double-figure scoring game, a school record.

Natalie Doma recorded a 24-point, 16-rebound double-double effort to lead Idaho State to an 84-78 victory over Northern Arizona in the championship game of the 2007 Chinook Wireless Big Sky Conference tournament at Dahlberg Arena. The Bengals earned the leagues automatic berth into the 2007 NCAA Division I Womens Basketball Tournament. Despite a game-high 32 points from Natalie Doma, Idaho State couldnt stop Stanfords hot shooting as the Bengals dropped a 96-58 decision to the fifth-ranked Cardinal in the first round of the NCAA Womens Basketball Tournament at Maples Pavilion. Idaho State, who finished the season with a 17-14 overall record, held their own through most of the first half, trailing by just four points with 12:01 to go until the break. Stanford then outscored ISU 26-9 over the next 10 minutes to take a 45-24. Doma became Idaho States all-time leading scorer after hitting a field goal with 14:34 remaining in the second half. The shot gave her 1,540 career points, breaking Mandi Carvers (1998-02) all-time career mark of 1,538 career points. The junior center connected on 12-of-25 shots from the field, including a career-high 4-of-6 mark from long range. Doma also pulled down seven rebounds in the game. ISUs lone senior Jeni Boesel helped with nine points on the day, including a make from long range. Michelle Grohs scored six points, while Andrea Lightfoot and Kaylynn Fager each collected four. Andrea Lightfoot scored a game-high 20 points and Joanna Hixon added 19 as Idaho State clinched the 2005-06 regular season Big Sky Conference Championship with a 77-75 win over Montana State at Reed Gym. The win gave Idaho State the right to host the Big Sky Tournament for the second time in school history. The win also made it a senior day to remember for Chelsey Chambers, Ali Gorny, and Dana Beechie, as all were honored in a pregame ceremony. Chambers started the game for ISU, playing on a torn ligament in her knee. It was great to just get out on the floor even if it was for just a couple of minutes, Chambers said of starting the game. Its amazing to be a part of all of this. Im so proud of our team. This title means a lot to us. Lightfoot recorded her fourth straight game with at least 20 or more points, connecting on 6-of-14 shots from the field. She was also 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Lightfoot also collected four rebounds, two assists, five steals, and a block in the effort. Hixon fell just one rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. The junior post went 8-of-15 from the field, and 1-of-2 from beyond the arc in 40 minutes of play. Doma put 18 points on the scoreboard with 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Jeni Boesel netted nine points, while Michelle Grohs came off the bench to add 10. Grohs also pulled down five rebounds. Idaho State drew the eventual WNIT champion Kansas State Wildcats for their 2006 opener, and the Bengals held tough until a late push by Kansas State gave them an 88-68 win over the Bengals, ending ISUs cinderella season at 17-13. Four Bengals scored in double-figures, led by Andrea Lightfoots 16 points and Natalie Domas double-double, but a 17-0 KSU run was the difference in the game. Jeni Boesel kept the Bengals close in the second half with a brilliant display, hitting 14 points in the second half, but KSU had an answer for every ISU second half surge. ISU nearly outrebounded the bigger Wildcats as ISU was beaten on the boards 43-42, but Kansas State shot .471 from the field. Joanna Hixon added 15 points and a game-high six assists for the Bengals.

ISUs second WNIT appearance was against eventual champion Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas.

    WOMENS NIT

Despite a game-high 17 points from freshman Molly Hays, Idaho State dropped its first-ever NIT postseason game to Iowa State 72-59 at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Hays scored her 17 points on 7-of-18 shots from the field, 2-of-7 from beyond the arc. The freshman forward also tallied nine rebounds, two assists and four steals in the effort--something Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly says isnt normal for a freshman. We just had no answer for (Molly) Hays tonight, Fennelly said. She didnt play like a freshman in a postseason tournament. She is a great player. Monika Marekova helped the Bengals with nine points off the bench. The junior guard connected on 3-of-8 shots, 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Marekova also tallied six rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Christa Brossman added eight points for the Bengals.

    SEASON PREVIEW

Head Coach Seton Sobolewski and his staff returns for their second season with the Idaho State womens basketball program. Last season the Bengals endured several challenges such as a reduced roster due to injury and the task of learning a new system. Even with the adversity that hit the Bengals the team advanced to the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament after tying for fourth place in the regular season. This year the Bengals return six letterwinners, including three seniors and three juniors, who have already spent a full season learning the motion offense that was implemented last year. We have a team with great potential, said head coach Sobolewski. Once weve had some time to work on our team chemistry and to get the new people up to speed, we will be very competitive. Idaho State returns three seniors, including regular starters Oana Iacovita and Devin Diehl along with Andrea Videbeck who is returning from a redshirt season. Forward Iacovita was named to three all-tournament teams including the Big Sky All-Conference team where she scored the game-winning shot against Sacramento State with .6 seconds left in overtime to advance the Bengals to the semifinals. She was a key player in ISUs near upset of Montana as she led the team with 22 points. Iacovita averaged 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds last season while recording a .455 field goal percentage. Oana had a great finish to last season being named to the Big Sky conference tournament all tournament team and averaging 18.5 points over the two games. We are looking for her to carry that momentum into this season, said Sobolewski. She has the ability to be one of the top forwards in the Big Sky conference. ISUs top off-ball defender from last season returns with senior Diehl who averaged six points and 3.5 rebounds. The guard/forward recorded four double-figure shooting games and scored a career-high 17 points against Southern Utah last season. She posted 11 blocked shots, the third most on the team. Devin worked hard in the off season to improve her consistency with her perimeter shooting. She has also put

in time with improving her pull-up shot. We will look to Devin for increased offensive production and like always, to be one of our top perimeter defenders, said Sobolewski. The Bengals welcome the return of junior guard Chelsea Pickering who was sidelined by an ACL tear midway through the season, just two games after a career-high performance. Pickerings performance was also a team game-high for the season when she posted 31 points against Portland State. The 5-9 guard averaged 10.4 points per game, and 15 in conference play. She also recorded 3.6 rebounds per game. Chelsea looks great coming off ACL surgery last spring. She had a couple of great games just before her injury, said Sobolewski. We are counting on Chelsea for scoring at the shooting guard position and solid defense. Idaho State also returns Kari Green who was a contributor for the Bengals last season as her minutes on the floor helped the Bengals gain some momentum. Redshirt junior guard Andrea Blodgett also returns. Idaho State welcomes ten newcomers to the Bengal basketball program, including seven freshmen and three transfers. A familiar face returns to Idaho State as senior Aralee Smith who began her basketball career with the Bengals competing for two seasons from 2006-08. Smith transfers back to Idaho State after a season at Southern Arkansas. She will be redshirting the 2009-10 season due to NCAA transfer rules. The womens basketball program recruited seven highly touted freshmen for the 2009-10 season that consists of three guards and four forwards. Guard Morgan Wohltman helped her team to the 2006-07 5A State championships for Highland High Schools second straight state title and was a McDonalds All-American Nominee among her many accomplishments. Morgan could be one of the best shooters I have ever coached, said Sobolewski. She is a big time perimeter shooting threat and a well rounded basketball player. Guard Kaela Oakes was named Region MVP in her senior year and helped Basha High School to the State Quarterfinals two years in a row while Brea Matthews, a 5-10 guard from San Diego, helped Mt. Carmel high school become a three-time defending CIF Champion team from 2006-08.

The womens basketball program gained some much needed height with the addition of two 63 players: Ashlee Rigter and Shannon Byrne. Rigter joins the Bengals from New Zealand where she competed for her country in the under 18 N2team from 2006-07. Byrne was the second highest scorer in the South Puget Sound League with 16.9 points per game her junior year. The Bengals also add two six-foot players; Ashley Smith and Ashleigh Vella. Smith was the Oregon 5A co-player of the year and helped her high school to an undefeated 27-0 record her senior season. Vella, who hails from Australia and holds dual citizenship in Maltese, helped Malta win a gold medal in the Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus in June of 2009. Ash Vellas aggressiveness and strength is making the transition from high school to division I easier for her, said head coach Sobolewski. She is a versatile player with the ability to score on the perimeter and in the post. She will also help us with our need to rebound the ball better. Though the Bengals have returned solid contributors and introduced some athletic freshman, Idaho State is still faced with several challenges including reintroducing the motion offense to the new Bengals and facing a tough

non-conference schedule. Luckily for the Bengals the adversity they faced last year will prepare them for the road ahead. The big challenge this year is getting the seven freshmen up to speed with our offense, defense, and playing at the Division I intensity. It is nice that we have six returning players who will be able to help the freshmen learn our philosophies. The returners have already helped in many ways, said Sobolewski. Our schedule is not going to give us any breaks either. We will be playing many good teams with several

being NCAA tournament teams from the Big 12, Big 10, and PAC 10 conferences. Idaho State opens its 2009-10 season at home against Boise State on Saturday, November 21 at 3:30 p.m. in Reed Gym. The Bengals will face a tough non-conference schedule that includes four 2009 NCAA tournament participants including Arizona State, California, Minnesota and Utah, as well as WNIT second round participant Nebraska.
