HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VANDALS• The Idaho Vandals took their name 100 years ago, in January of 1918,

when Hec Edmonson’s team played with such ferocity that area sports writers said they “Vandalized” their opponents.

• This sparked Argonaut reporter Harry Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty to write in a pregame story “The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the present gang of ‘Vandals’ have the best material that has ever carried the ‘I’ into action.”

• The nickname stuck, and became the official nickname for all Idaho teams in 1921.

VANDALS IN BOISE• Idaho played a neutral site game against UC Irvine in Boise on

December 21.• It was the first time the Vandals had played in Boise since the 2014-

15 season, and the Vandal faithful showed up in full force with 4,096 fans in attendance.

• The Big Sky Tournament will move to CenturyLink Arena next season.

buckets were scarce early, and kept that play up.

GREAT ALASKA SHOOTOUT• Idaho took third in the 40th and final Great Alaska Shootout,

winning its opening game against Santa Clara before falling to CSU Bakersfield in the semifinals. Idaho bounced back to defeat Cal Poly in the third place game.

• Victor Sanders and Perrion Callandret were both named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.

• Sanders led the Shootout at 22 points per game. He finished third in 3-point percentage (57%) and first in 3-pointers made (12). His 12 3’s were tied for the 10th most in a single Shootout in its 40-year history.

• Callandret finished fifth in scoring (17.3 ppg), fifth in field goal percentage (57%), first in 3-point percentage (64%) and third in 3’s made (9)

• Brayon Blake led the shootout with 27 rebounds• As a team, Idaho finished first in points per game (68.7 ppg). Idaho

shot 46 percent from beyond the arc to lead the Shootout. The next closest team was Cal Poly at 37.2%.

• The Idaho defense was strong all tournament, holding opponents to 38% shooting from the floor, the second best defense in the Shootout.

SANTA CLARA GAME (VIC DOES IT AGAIN)• Idaho needed another brilliant run from Victor Sanders against Santa

Clara. After scoring nine straight by himself against Sam Houston State, Sanders followed that up with a solo 8-0 run to reclaim the lead against Santa Clara.

• Perrion Callandret was also exceptional, going 5-of-5 from beyond the arc to tie the Idaho program record. The mark, for most made 3’s without a miss, has been done twice before. The first occurance came by Mauro Gomez (1/21/89), while the second was Stephen Madison (2/14/13).

THE VIC SHOW VS SAM HOUSTON STATE• Idaho took an early lead against Sam Houston State, going up by as

many as 13 in the opening minutes, but the Bearkats fought their way back late in the half and into the second.

• Idaho responded well, with the defensive intensity picking up. Then Victor Sanders took over.

• Sanders knocked down his first 3-pointer of the night with 4:39 to play and Idaho up by just one. He was crucial on the following defensive possession, helping Nate Sherwood pick up the steal, then

2017-18 IDAHO MEN'S BASKETBALLcame up court and knocked down another 3 to put Idaho up seven.

• After another outstanding defensive possession for Idaho, Sanders tried again from long range but was fouled. He hit all three free throws.

• In the end, the stretch lasted 77 seconds, with Sanders outscoring the Bearkats 9-0 by himself and Idaho going from up one to up 10.

LAST YEAR...• The Vandals went 19-14, including

12-6 in the Big Sky to finish tied for third.

• Idaho advanced to the BSC Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual champion North Dakota.

• The Vandals then took to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament where they defeated Stephen F. Austin in the opening round at home before losing at Texas State.

DOUBLEHEADERS• Idaho will play a number of

doubleheaders with the women in 2017-18, something less familiar for the squad.

• The first comes as an exhibition, against Lewis-Clark State, on November 5 at home. The games will serve as the final preseason tests for both the men and the women.

• The next doubleheader comes on December 15, with the women facing Seattle U. and the men taking on Simon Fraser.

• The final non-conference doubleheader will take place in Boise, with the women hosting Eastern Oregon and the men facing UC Irvine.

• The local series between Idaho and Eastern Washington gets more interesting in 2017-18, with the men and women set to switch to doubleheaders for the first time. Both meetings will switch to doubleheaders, first in Cheney on January 12 then back in Moscow on February 9.

TUNE-UP WITH THE DUCKS - MONEY FOR CHARITY• Idaho made the quick trip out to

Eugene to take on the University of

Oregon on October 28.• Although the Vandals fell to the

Ducks, 81-57, Idaho was able to feature a number of freshmen as they continue to get acclimated with the college game

• The game was also beneficial for the Oregon community, as Idaho and UO were able to raise $17,465 for the Red Cross Wildfire Relief efforts.

SENIOR SCORING• Idaho’s class of six seniors ranks

second in the nation with 3,736 career points entering the season, trailing only Seton Hall’s senior class.

• Victor Sanders leads the way with 1,215 career points, the 11th most by an individual in program history. Sanders broke the 1,000-point threshold last season against Sacramento State.

• The pairing of Sanders (101) and Chad Sherwood (46) netted 147 total 3’s last season, the 17th best total among returning duos in the nation.

OLD, BUT YOUNG• Despite being a sernior-heavy roster,

Idaho is also stacked with young talent.

• The Vandals have six true freshmen on scholarship, the fifth most in the country.

• Idaho trails just Pittsburgh, Mount St. Mary’s, Duke and Kentucky, who all have seven scholarshipped freshmen.

SCHEDULE• Idaho faces a challenging non-

conference schedule in 2017-18.• The Vandals will face four teams that

won conference championships last year, beginning with Nevada on November 10. Idaho will also take on UC Irvine (Big West), CSU Bakersfield (WAC) and Western Michigan (MAC West).
