Aruba’s History
In 1636, Aruba was acquired by the Netherlands and remained under their control for nearly two centuries. During the Napoleonic wars, the British Empire took control over the island, between 1799 and 1802, and between 1804 and 1816, before handing it back to the Dutch. A 19th-century gold rush was followed by prosperity brought on by first the opening of a crude oil transshipment facility in 1924 and then in 1928 with the opening of an oil refinery. The last decades of the 20th century saw a boom in the tourism industry which became Aruba's primary industry when the refinery closed in 1985. Because of the focus on tourism and the number of resorts on the island, Arubans enjoy a very low unemployment rate. Aruba has earned a reputation as the "Las Vegas of the Caribbean."
ARUBA
Aruba is famous for the spectacular shipwrecks and interesting coral formations that dominate Aruba’s underwater realm.

More About ArubaKnown as the wreck-diving capital of the Caribbean, Aruba’s entire south coast
is a coral reef with over twenty dive sites and eleven diver-friendly wrecks such
as a plane, tugboats, cement cargo ship, war and historic vessels. Aruba’s easily
accessible reefs and shallow formations of coral will fascinate snorkelers while
reef and wreck diving reveals a brilliant underwater panorama of sea life. Shore
dives are possible off De Palm Island, Pos Chiquito and Baby Beach.
Their topography and vegetation are unusual for a Caribbean island. Divi-divi
trees, easily recognized by their distinctive wind-sculpted shape, dot a landscape
defined by miles of pristine white beaches and a rugged northeast coast.
Aruba is home to several natural reefs, including one of the most popular for
snorkelers, Barcadera Reef, thanks to its depth variations. Parts of the reef are
only about 20 feet deep, making it easily visible to snorkelers who want to see
several types of coral and all sorts of brightly colored fish.
