Mangaore Diocese-ICYM History
ABOUT US
“Example is the greatest teacher”, and true to this at every step in its Christian mission the Catholic Youth Movement in India has
brought Christ to every heart and home. With an illustrious history that dates back to over five decades this movement has been
nurtured by the heartening response in love and acceptance of the coastal people. Embracing the cultural diversities of its time the
movement embarked on its mission to change the outlook of the youth towards being another Christ in this world. With nobility of
heart and a service oriented approach the catholic youth movement was initiated in Mangalore diocese.
In compliance with the Directive of CBCI that each Diocese should have its own Catholic Youth Movement, Most Rev. Dr. Victor
Rosario Fernandes, Bishop of Mangalore made an official announcement to this effect on 18-02-1947. On April 13th 1947 a
committee was formed and Mr. Robert Rosario of Bejai was appointed President of Catholic Action in the Diocese.
Hence April 13, 1947 can rightly be considered as the birth day of the Catholic Youth Movement in the Diocese. Under the guidance
of Fr. Augustine Lobo, O.F.M. the first CYM unit in the Diocese was started in Bejai on 4th May 1947.During the following months
CYM units were started in other parishes of the city.
The Indian catholic youth movement currently consists of 140 divisions incorporating all the provisions of the youth movement of the
world over. Rev Father Anil D‟souza is currently the director of Mangalore Diocese Youth Movement and under him it has rendered
its service not only at Diocese level, but also at National and International level and has bought fame and name to the movement. This
youth movement has been responsible in creating young leaders and also promoting them. Until now the movement has achieved great
success in various streams. It has promoted deep God Experience, Community Building, Leadership, and critical analysis, Social
Commitment, Motivation and Talent Exploration.
The movement thus aimed to infuse in the young qualities of confidence, self esteem, discipline, dedication and a comprehensive
character building. It strives to mould the future of these germinating seeds to bear fine fruit. It unites the minds and the hearts of
people to extend their munificence to the deprived and develop a humane approach towards others instilling the virtue of „love thy
neighbor as thy self‟.
It renders its contribution in spirit to all Christian faith programmes and actively involves itself in related activities that strengthen the
mission of the church in India.
HISTORY:
The second Vatican council unreservedly encouraged the initiation of the youth movement as it was a breath of fresh air into the
operations in existence. It handed over its mission of embodying the youth in the ministry of the Catholic Church.
The Mangalore youth movement made its presence felt by organizing youth groups and steering them towards practicing the teachings
of Christ both in body and mind by undertaking services galore.
In 1950 the movement attracted youth from far and near giving rise to a full fledged association with organized wings under its aegis.
In 1963 the youth movement brought out its first monthly publication “bhavadthi yuvak” in Konkani. This not only enlightened but
awakened the Christian youth to chip in their personal contributions in every little way possible.
In 1965 after the second Vatican council, owing to the revolution in the Catholic Church the Mangalore diocese youth movement was
given an impetus and with its dedicated approach it pioneered many events.
In 1970 YCS and YSM were formed in Mangalore with novel ideas in patronage to the existing youth movement.
In 1980 the movement stressed on the magnitude of training the youth to become intrepid leaders and empowering them to pilot
activities of building moral fiber. It also accentuated on the need to enhance their talents and give them a platform to demonstrate their
distinctive capacities.
In 1990 it emerged as one of the strongest associations working for the church. It organized several inter-diocesan, inter-state meets,
conferences and training camps so that through these mediums the zest for Christ may reach each person.
In 1996 November, with a mission of employing the Diocesan youth “Employee Me‟ centre was established. Its objectives are to
provide information to the unemployed, Employment training programmes, helping in preparation of C.V, Interview. Human
Resource is provided to over 100 Companies in Mangalore, Bangalore, Mumbai, Calicut, Cochin, Chennai and other places.
In accordance with the objectives of ICYM and to make the youth more realistic and working Cup Award was introduced in 1997
August
In 1997 the golden anniversary of this movement was celebrated in solemnity.
In 2000 it attained the status of a national movement and received the title Indian Catholic Youth Movement. This was a significant
milestone. The YCS and YSM divisions also gained momentum and they achieved great good in their public service vocation.
In 2001 YCS and YSM activities were extended to Udupi district and it was given the status of an independent wing. Thus three active
wings of Mangalore, Udupi and Kasargod were persevering in their endeavor.
In 2002 “Jashey Adium Tashey Atha ”, A talent programme witnessed the participation of over 250 youngsters and a commendable
audience of over 8000 people.
In 2004 June, father Peter Pinto was handed the mantle of the movement in the udupi district.

enthusiastic youngsters of over a thousand from all over the state.

The year 2006 and 2007 saw great intensification of the movement both in quality as well as in quantity. Fortitude and passion was
what pulled the movement to greater success through each passing day. Finally this culminated in the completion of 60 impressive
years of effort. This was celebrated exquisitely and since then this movement has only grown stronger.
In 2008 AMCHO YUVAK commemorated 25 years of its monthly publication with delight promising to make it more soul stirring,
driving home to the youth the message of love and sacrifice.
