Plan process
• Aiming for the next maturity level?
• Scope/level of the plan
• What life cycle?
• Who are your main stakeholders?
• Consult, participate, or inform?
ICT budgeting• ICT cost categories
– Central infrastructure– Internet access– Applications
• For teaching & learning• For research & library• For admin & management• For office automation
– Computer centre– User support– Continuous staff development & innovation (sandpit)
• Don’t forget about maintenance & depreciation
Efficient ICT use• One failed ICT project needs 10 successful ones to
compensate • Some widespread pitfalls:
– Internet: bandwidth totally consumed by yahoo and hotmail
– ARIS: converting complete and reliable student files; complex processes involving Registry, Bursary, Schools
– LIS: retrospective conversion; competition with www
– HRM: no job structure and job profiles; ‘salaries’ in between the Registrar’s Office and the Bursar’s Office
– FIS: loss of ‘flexibility’ by management and accountants; duplicate computerised and manual system
