Airport IRoma Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is the largest airport in Italy interms of annual traffic. The airport saw 36.3 mio. passengers in2010 through 5 terminals to 190 destinations.

Some relevant figures:175 GWh annual electricity consumption.A thermal power plant delivers 87 MWth including a cogeneration generating 26 MWel and 15 MWth.Large air handling units supplied by district heating and acompression and absorption chillers system ensure good indoor climate conditions.

The CASCADE solution will be piloted in two major Euro-pean hubs at Milan Malpensa and Roma Fiumicino airportsand implemented and tested by airports energy and main-tenance teams on significant heating, ventilation and airconditioning systems supplying public open spaces. A measurement and verification plan will be carried out tovalidate and quantify the success of the CASCADE solutionin terms of energy savings, carbon emission reduction andeconomics. The new Energy Management System will be tested and evaluated jointly between the airport energyteams and the CASCADE experts.

Airport IIMilan Malpensa Airport (MXP) is the second largest airport inItaly behind Fiumicino. In 2010, MXP experienced 18.7 mio. passengers through 2 terminals.

Some relevant figures:140 GWh annual electricity consumption.A tri-generation plant delivers 80 MWel, 90 MWth heating, and 36 MWth chilled water through a large absorption chiller complex.Large air handling units supply the Terminal 1 with fresh airand ensure a good thermal comfort.

Diagnostic Tools

»Airports consume as much energy

as small cities. CASCADE project will

help to reduce their energy needs by

developing an ISO 50001 Energy Man-

agement System, based on advanced

Fault Detection and Diagnosis tools.«

Airports are critical nodes in the global trans-

portation network connecting people and facili-

tating business. They are also massive energy

consumers and can therefore significantly con-

tribute to the European energy and emissions

reduction goals through energy savings at a

large scale. Airport energy managers are

looking at new solutions to better support the

energy operation and maintenance of their

complex systems and to allow them better

identify energy conservation areas. CASCADE

will answer these needs in developing a new

ISO-50001 based Energy Management System,

supported by Fault Detection and Diagnosis and

demonstrate it in two major European airports.

The CASCADE project will target following results:

Implement an ISO 50001 based Enregy Action Plan designed for airport energy managing teams linkingenergy conservation actions with airport actors.Apply automated Fault Detection and Diagnosis for continuous energy efficient operation and maintenancesupport of targeted building energy systems.A 20% reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emissions on targeted systems.A return on investment in less than 3 years.

The CASCADE solution answers these questions by:

Engaging the airport energy management teams, determining their needs and motivating them.Integrating new ICT systems with existing ICT and energysystems at airport facilities.Collecting data and providing advanced visualizations onbuilding equipment operation and performance.Applying Fault Detection and Diagnosis Methods and forward the results to the energy team.Making an energy action plan that links actors, actions, theISO 50001 specification and provides cost/benefit ratios.

What does Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) do?

Recognize energy inefficiencies and faults quickly, systematically, and automatically.Reduce operational costs by performing maintenance onan as-needed basis through system monitoring.Protect capital by warning of potentially damaging statesand operations.

With the CASCADE solution, the faulty operation of typicalbuilding energy systems will be automatically detected anddiagnostics will be provided to the airport maintenanceteam over an ISO 50001 based Energy Management System. The developed solution will be measurement-based, techno-logy neutral and will integrate with various systems offeringa large connectivity and interoperability.

The new ISO 50001 defines conditions to set up an operatio-nal Energy Management System which will be developed withairport energy managers. Fault Detection and Diagnosis andother feedback from control and monitoring systems will beintegrated with ISO 50001.

The ISO 50001 approach helps solve the major questions ofthe “energy management challenge”, which are:

How do you help busy managers to reduce energy costs at many buildings? How do you achieve energy savings quickly? How do you continue to reduce energy consumption, year after year?

Integrated Solution

CASCADE integrated solution: The CASCADE solution delivers, via a webinterface, an ISO 50001 energy action management platform supportedby sub-hourly performance data visualization and automated FaultDetection and Diagnosis (FDD) of building systems. Data are gathered at the airport from existing systems or advanced dataloggers, then concentrated in the CASCADE local server and finally transferred to theDatastorage tool. FDD is performed by both the Datastorage tool andthe Sensus MI tool. The Enerit tool receives FDD signals and transformsthem in content rich information by interrogating the airport ontology. The final web interface enables effective energy action management for all stakeholders involved in the energy O&M process.
